This is a big garden, which features many plants introduced by early Polynesians and some endemic Hawaiian plants. It's worth a visit if in the area but likely not worth a visit as a destination. The admission fee includes a nice guidebook, and many of the plants have informative signs

If you want a taste of the real Hawaii, you must visit this Kahanu Garden branch of the National Tropical Botanic Gardens. It is a canoe garden, showcasing and safe housing the plants the Polynesians brought with them to this beautiful place. We truly enjoyed seeing all of the varieties of breadfruit trees and coconut palms, and learning about all of the other plants and their uses. This garden also houses the largest historic heiau, or temple, in Hawaii. The number of volcanic rocks needed to build this structure is unimaginable! If you are visiting the Hana area, be sure to stop by this wonderful garden and support its good work!

This is a little off the track off the Road to Hana, but well worth it! It is on the same road of the Hana Lava Tube. We throughly enjoyed the garden & temple in the morning hours before the crowd arrived! It was very educational with amazing views! Don't forget the sunscreen as there isn't much shade in the sun beating sun! The tourist guide at check in was very nice & friendly as well!

The garden itself is very pretty and the views of the ocean are good. Their is also a Hawaiian Temple ruin, although you can't climb on it. You do have to drive down a sometimes muddy dirt road. This is worth it if you have the time, but not something I would deem as a must see.

This is a little off the beaten track, but it is well worth visiting. The heiau is amazing, and the grounds provide a pleasant and education walk.

We LOVED the ancient temple! The meeting place with the dugout canoe was really interesting. The grounds and views are nice too. We went in early afternoon on a week day. We only saw about 6 more people. It was great to have it almost to ourselves.

Once you've survived to unmade drive to the entrance you'll find a warm welcome and an experience worth having.
The walk around the site is great, as are the things to see. There is plenty of signage and some really good close views of the sea.

This visit was a birthday gift. Wasn't what I had expected. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and personable. Learned so much about the Hawaiian history, its people, the vegetation, the islanders life beliefs, etc. And, the place is beautiful.

So you take the road to Hana and think you could see a botanical garden on Saturday. Not to be. Turns out that they are already shutting down at 1:30pm and the gate is locked at 2pm. If you started out really early and didn't enjoy the road, then you would have time. Otherwise, you might run out of time. Caution. There also are other evaluations suggesting they didn't think it was worth it.

We didn't have time to see the gardens as we arrived late. They allowed us to come in and charged me the full rate but they didn't allow us to stay longer than twenty minutes. The gardens looked really nice but mostly we just wanted to see the Pi'ilanihale Heiau which was started as early as the end of the 13th century. Very cool but could have used more time.

Nominal cost; and you receive a very nice booklet with the name and detail description of the various plants. A very beautiful, peaceful, relaxing garden. A true Hawaiian experience. Maybe $10 to enter the grounds, you drive your car in, then walk after you park. Do take water did not see any water fountain.
