“Interesting beach, be carefull, the waves can be poweful”

We travelled her with our Road to Hana tour, and a couple of the guests were knocked down, while just standing at the edge of the water. The ocean is unpredicable, stay clear of the rock surround, one of the guests, just missed knocking her head against it.

On our long drive to Hana, we made several stops at the many many turn outs and viewing stops. This black sand beach was beautiful, the waves were coming in and crashing on the beach and rocks. It was a fabulous experience. I recommend stopping and just sitting on a rock by the surf and taking in the solitude and mother nature.

We stopped here during our road to Hana. We brought with us a picnic lunch and enjoyed the beautiful black sand beach. We had reservations from 10-12:30. We left our hotel at 7:00am and arrived at the park at 11:30. The bathrooms were clean and there was an area to hose off after the beach.

Beautiful sight! One of the rare black sand beaches! The area is small, but make sure you get reservations to see this beautiful area!

Just Amazing - A Natural Wonder

You need to make a reservation at the Wai'anapanapa State Park to get admission. $10 per car plus $5 per person. Nice paved walking paths for the most part and stairs down to the black sand beach. It is amazing and a MUST see on the road to Hana.

We stopped here and walked down to the overlook to check out the beach. Nice black sand strip for swimming as well as cliffs to climb for a better view.

Beautiful black sand beach

Enjoyed the black sand beach and lava caves. Nobody talks about the cemetery going in and out of the park, wanted to be respectful but some areas were hard to determine if it was part of the park or the cemetery.

What an incredible beach! Don’t miss this experience while in Maui. It is worth the drive. This black sand beach experience was so wonderful. Words cannot fully capture what it feels like to enjoy swimming in these stunning waters.

Note: You must have a parking reservation. The attendants are strict about seeing your QR code.

Recommendation: Go to this destination first and then backtrack to other places of interest on the Road to Hana. We were a little late to our reservation because we stopped at other places along the way. If you are late, you cannot make up the time by staying longer on the beach/grounds.

A Beach You NEED to Experience

Awesome experience getting to visit the Black Sand Beach.

The smaller sand felt amazing, almost like little black beads. Could only stay about an hour. There's other little trails and things that you can walk to get a different view or cool photos.

If you're doing the Road to Hana, make sure to make this one of your stops.

If possible, and if reservations are still required, make this your first stop if you can and work your way backwards. Less people to deal with!

How often do you see a black sand beach?

Absolutely gorgeous! The sand is beautiful (not very friendly to sensitive bare feet I discovered, so I suggest you wear sandals or whatever), the surroundings are beautiful, and the waves are fun. What's not to like?

Note: our host made reservations at Waianapanapa State Park, so be sure you have those in hand before showing up.
