When I booked this tour I had no idea how little I knew about one of the most common flavorings used around the world. The process for growing and processing vanilla was mind blowing. I learned a lot and will never take vanilla for granted again. Zak was a great tour host; his passion for vanilla and teaching clearly came through. I really liked that this tour took me away from more touristy places and away from the crowds. Highly recommend getting off the beaten path and finding your way to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company.

This was a great tour! It was fascinating to learn all about how vanilla is grown, and the ice cream was delicious! :)

This was our second visit to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company for both lunch and the tour. We were not disappointed as the meal was fabulous and the tour by Bryce was informative. We will return again on our next visit to The Big Island.

This was our second time to the big island and when we knew we were coming back, lunch and tour was the first thing we booked. Zak's new to the team since were were there last, but we loved his spin and the additional information he's brought to the company and we loved learning about the co-op and all it's doing to increase the vanilla coming out of Hawaii. Highly recommend this on your trip to the big island.

I so enjoyed this experience of learning about the vanilla bean. It was so informative the people who run this are friendly and knowledgeable . So enjoyed their company and the expertise of the lunch infusing vanilla into it all. Thank you
Although it is so far out of the way of a cruse ship passenger, we paid 130.00 for one way. ouch using uber. I'm sure there is better transportation but this was my first time downloading an app. and using it (lol). Maybe it would be easier if you could arrange transportation.

To ALL big island travelers - for this California traveler's opinion - is a MUST DO. Friends who live in Hawaii have been telling me about this off-the-beaten-path company & farm for years. There is family history and definitely labors of love that go into this successful company. I was fortunate to meet Adian (I believe grandson) of the original owner who was preparing our tasting for our group. And Zak, who we were lucky enough to land as our guide.
We tried to secure reservations for their lunch & tour. Sold out. They had another option - their tasting & tour. We booked it. Oooooooh, and we are so glad we did.
If you like vanilla (who doesn't?) and if you like food (gotta eat) then this is without doubt the stop for you.
The experience happens in two parts. First, is the tasting. Have you ever done or seen a cooking class at Willams Sonoma or Sur la Table? Then you can picture the set up. Your small group are all sitting at beautiful wood tables. Zak wheels out a small cooking station and begins your education into the world of vanilla.
The tasting started with Zak cooking us up delicious shrimp (and yes they ask about food allergies) on crostini. So good. Then we are treated to a local lettuce mix & their own dressing, accompanied by some of the best soup I've tasted in a while. All of which are presented in excellent fashion. So not only does the food you're tasting taste good - it looks good too, We are then treated to popcorn that has been tossed in yet another yummy concoction devoted to the vanilla bean.
The second part is the tour. It is a short walk down to their greenhouses where the vanilla plants live. Zak was excellent in his presentation of all things vanilla, and all of us learned a lot, without it being wonky or deeply scientific. Zak kept it relevant to today's world and what we all typically see & buy - but also the history and appreciation for true vanilla. He is very good at being concise. Which for some folks who go on tours, really appreciate.
Once you walk back up from the greenhouses - you are back at the tasting tables and greeted with one of the most delicious single scoop of vanilla ice cream I can remember eating in life. That is accompanied by a small espresso sized cup of coffee.
Fellow travelers... if this was the tasting & tour experience - I cannot imagine the wonder of the lunch experience. Someone who is lucky enough to book a reservation for that will need to write in so I can read what that was all about.
Bottom line - this is a NO BRAINER experience. You will leave knowing more than when you walked in, appreciating more of what you taste, and definitely experiencing a more rural and beautiful place on the big island that lots of us tourists just don't get to see.
Final note - I'm not too sure I would bring kids to this. Unless you have super sophisticated 6 year olds - I think a lot of it would be a bore to them. If they ever decided to do a "family style tour" and made it kid-friendly & fun then Zak would be the guy to lead it. Oh! - if the tours are all sold out - they are open for anyone to walk in and purchase a root beer float or vanilla milkshake!
Any way you look at it - this checks all of the boxes for this traveler. I hope you give it a go and like it as much as our group did.
Aloha

My wife and I really enjoyed stopping at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company. Zachary gave a great tour and you can tell he is very passionate about this company. We know a lot more about how vanilla is grown and distributed.

I learned a great deal that I didn't know and gained a new appreciation for vanilla both in terms of understanding the cost and the enjoyment of vanilla in both savory and sweet dishes. You have to try this especially if you are a plant person or a foodie person.

We were a full group - two tables of 10 - and we were there a bit over two hours. As mentioned, how many questions are asked is also a factor, as a "tour only" group joins the "tour and lunch" group" for the tour, so there are more people. And stay for the end - that's when you try the vanilla ice cream and can sample some coffee with their vanilla sugars. :)

Can you purchase tickets in advance for the tour and lunch? What is the cost?
Ditulis pada 8 Januari 2019
yes, in fact i think reservations are required so they can plan the correct number of lunches. go to their website and complete the reservation form or call the number listed and a they'll take your payment info. cost varies by lunch and tour choices.

how long does the lunch and tour take?
is the gift shop and lunch in the same location?
Ditulis pada 6 Mei 2018
I wasn’t paying too much attention to the time as I was really enjoying myself but I’d guess about 1.5 - 2 hrs. And yes the gift shop and lunch are in the same building. Go and enjoy yourself! It’s one of those activities that you will remember, especially in 8 months when I can start using the vanilla I’m making from the beans I bought there 😁

How long is the tour without the lunch?
Ditulis pada 13 Januari 2018
We did not do the lunch. As I recall the non-lunch tour starts at 1PM. You get there and enjoy the complimentary beverage. The actual tour our day started about 1:15 PM and lasted 60 minutes. It involves walking about 1 - 2 blocks to the farm area. You then return at about 2:15 PM to the starting place, also called 'the mill' which has the food, gift shop, etc. They show a 5 minute movie which is a clip from a visit by the Food Network and serve ice cream. A few questions and you are done. I think we left by 2:30 PM or so. Very well organized and worth the visit!

How does this lunch tour handle gluten and other dietary restrictions?
Ditulis pada 1 November 2017
They are very accommodating to dietary restrictions ...You just have to make them aware of it before you arrive there. I believe there is a section on the website to make that known when you sign up or you can call them

How much walking? Trouble with knees and cannot walk too far
Ditulis pada 18 Oktober 2017
Dad has a bad back, knees, & hip and walks with a cane. He made it okay. It's maybe 200 yards? But half of it is down hill going and up hill coming. But he told us we could drive down and drop dad off if necessary.

How much time should we plan for the lunch and tour? We are trying to plan something in Hilo later in the day? Thanks.
Ditulis pada 3 September 2017
We arrived a little before the 12:30 start for the luncheon. After lunch, the non-luncheon people joined us for the short walk down to the area where the vanilla is grown. I'd say we were done before 2:00 (didn't remember to check time).

How much does the tour cost? For either just the tour or for both the lunch and tour?
