Absolutely beautiful snorkeling area! Abundance of ocean life. We parked in lot for $5 fee. It’s just a steel drop box for money & proceeds go to The Painted Church. Porta potties are available. There were a few picnic tables but majority of people just spread out on the lava rocks. This is not a sand beach. Areas were restricted & marked to not enter as trying to regrow coral & algae. It’s well marked where not to enter & where you can enter. Please respect the area & follow the rules! The area you entered is a lava ledge with almost like a second step & you can basically just go into snorkel. Don’t need to jump in - just kind of step in or crouch down & just start snorkeling. Absolutely beautiful coral heads & such a HUGE variety of fish! Be careful getting out as there are urchins in the crevices/holes of lava rocks. I had a little trouble getting out the first time but my husband helped me. I did not want to put my hand on an urchin! Just beautiful to snorkel & float looking at abundance of sea life. So glad we went here! We went around 8:30am and lots of trucks & boat trailers, but not too many snorkelers at that time. As day progressed it got more busy. Just beautiful snorkeling spot!

Fantastic snorkeling. Can get crowded when the boat tours arrive so get there early. Like around 9am / 10am. Lots of fish and cool surroundings.

Decided to come snorkel here after visiting the National Park the day before. It gets very busy later in the day and several snorkel/ dive boats show up with lots of people. We arrived early and parked in the little parking lot by the boat ramp. Make sure to pay the $5 for parking to the guy under the awning. Entry point for snorkeling is where the orange cone is located. There are two rock steps here that make for easy entry/exit. If you have children, please do not let your children all hover at the steps and hold up the entry/exit process. It’s a small entry/exit point for all to use so be respectful of that. Please read the sandwich board signs as well with information for the local area and how to respect where they live.
Snorkeling was good and water clear. Can be busy when the boats come in with big groups. Also, a local canoe/kayak club so it can be busy with water craft. Overall it was good experience except for the tourists that disregard some simple “rules” to make it better for all to enjoy. Don’t be that person when you go.

This is a very good snorkeling spot - with a few caveats.
1. Go early. It starts to get hot and crowded later in the day. Hot lava rock is not good for bare feet.
2. Know your equipment and skill level. I wouldn't recommend this for an inexperienced swimmer or snorkeler. Know what you are doing or go to a regular snorkel beach.
3. Don't plan to stay the whole day. There are so many other good places to hang out on the island. Swim and snorkel here, but find a nice sandy swimming beach for the afternoon.
I like two step a lot, but it is one of my morning swim/snorkel spots on the big island that should be enjoyed in moderation.

Hard to find parking and not a real beach, not much sand at all. We went over to black sand beach and it was better but crowded.

As mentioned in other reviews, parking at Honaunau can be tricky to find, and some of it is on private land so costs $5. There is very little sand, most of the area is old lava flows. There are shallow pools, but these can have stagnant hot water by the afternoon. In other words, this isn't the greatest place to come if you're just planning on sitting on the beach. However, the snorkeling is terrific. You're guaranteed to see lots of colorful fish and coral. Turtles and dolphins are also frequently seen in the area. The entry and exit to the open ocean snorkeling is in an area that has pretty big surge, and you pretty much have to get back in to land using the two natural steps in the rocks by letting the swell wash you up. This makes it a poor location for the mobility impaired. There is a boat ramp to the south of the open water area that provides a shallow snorkeling option with easier entry and exit, although there aren't as many fish on that side. Good swimmers can make their way around to the open area from here.

Right next to Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Two Step is a beautiful beach to enjoy the waterfront, pools in the volcanic rocks and some amazing snorkelling. There were some picnic tables and shade to find, but there was very little sand to sit on if you don’t get a seat at the tables. If you wanted to park close, there is a fee, otherwise park at a distance (along the road to the historical site) and walk. There isn’t a permanent toilet or water fountains but there are portable toilets. Great little lagoon to spend a few hours at.

Exceptional snorkeling that is easy to access. Parking can be a bit rough. Make sure you try the smoothies at house by the entrance!! So delicious.

Location is very nice and entry into the water for snorkeling is VERY easy. Lots of people. A local resident said they can get about 500 visitors a day.
Unfortunately this site is being "loved" to death. Massive amounts of dead coral. The local said a project is underway to restore the coral and educate the visitors on how they can be part of the solution.

Amazing place to snorkel. No lifeguard on duty, so make sure you know how to swim confidently, and how to use your snorkeling gear before you step into the water.
