We couldn’t find it ?? We followed the satnav but it took us down a very windy road and then a road that looked as though it was going to nowhere! Signposts were virtually non - existent so we drove back to our resort!@

Our family loved our few hours snorkeling here!! We got to this area via people power - we kayak’ed through a local company along with a guide. I don’t think I’d ever seen such a variety of sea life in one small spot. Just incredible. As a side benefit, our guide gave us some historical background on the cliffs and structures in the area. What an afternoon!!

My watch clocked 101 floors on a way up. This requires some cardio fitness and strong quads. We are an active couple 62 and 72 years old. I would say it is a moderately difficult trail.
My advice is to pick a cloudy day and start early to avoid hiking when the UV index is the highest. Wear good shoes and watch your step especially during the first part of the hike when it is very hard to see where you are stepping as the trail is overgrown with grass. There are loose rocks and stepping on one can make you loose your balance.
The views from the trail are beautiful.
We came just for the hike but saw number of tour boats there and people snorkeling.
It was bizarre to see some people put chairs and towels right in front of the Captain Cook monument. He must be turning over in his grave..
Take plenty of water and some food if you are planning to stay in the bay for a while.
BTW - there are no restrooms there.

Parked at trail head and hiked down. Approximately 2 miles one way. Fairly steep all the way down.
Do not hike unless you are fit. Fairly rigorous. Take plenty of water, minimum three to four bottles per.
Absolutely the best snorkeling on the big island. Worth the hike.
No facilities at top or bottom

The snorkeling here is great. We took a tour in a boat from up the coast rather than make the long hike down. Lots of coral, lots of underwater formations, lots of sea life, clear and peaceful water. We saw lots of fish, including puffers, morays, parrot fish, clown fish, trumpet fish, trigger fish, and lots of sea urchins. Highly recommend.

Kealakekua Bay may not look all that different at first but once you’re under the water it is literally breathtaking! The different fish around that coral made my heart sing! I could have stayed there all day! We were super fortunate in that there was only a few boats who came before us, and they ALL left about half way through our snorkel. The next boat literally didn’t come until we were getting ready to leave. Please wear reef safe sunscreen in this area especially, because this is an amazing spot that is coming back to life!! I had the very best time here! I can see why some people are willing to hike that crazy trial!

This is the second time making the hike. First time was solo. This time I was joined by my wife.
I'm 49 years old and in pretty good shape for my age.
The hike was much easier for me than 4 years ago due to being able to work out this year. Last time I was coming off a knee injury. It still is not an easy hike.
The downhill is more difficult than the return climb. It is shaded for about the first half of the hike. The rest has no shade. It took us about an hour each way but we stopped for pictures/video a few times. The snorkeling at the end is great. I saw a pretty large eel but no dolphins.
Beware that there are a lot of loose rocks. It would be very easy to injure a knee or ankle on the rocks. A majority of the hike is over loose terrain. It is a steady decline/incline with pretty much no flat stretches.
I worked at the IRONMAN triathlon from 7am to 1 pm the day of our hike so we didn't start until after 2. The heat was fine for us but may not be for others.
Take plenty of water and a pair of dry shorts for after you swim. I saw people into their 60's that were making the hike with frequent breaks. We also saw people not make it. It's worth it though

This definitely is a great place for snorkeling. The water is brilliant, the corals and fish are numerous. Also a good place to take underwater-fotos.

Good snorkeling. A very long walk to get there. I found going down with the loose lava worse then going up. Do not hike this trail unless you plan on snorkeling. Shocked by the number of people hiking with kids without snorkeling, and then trying to ask the tours to sell them snorkel gear. Be prepared. The mongoose will open your pack, very talented and eat your sandwich. I’m glad we did it, but the snorkeling at 2 step was amazing and a lot less effort to get there. I wouldn’t personally go back

We hiked down, which took us about 45 minutes. Once there, you'll encounter a beautiful bay with crystal clear water. I forgot my snorkel gear, but my sister-in-law didn't, so she went out and said it was great. It's a destination spot for kayakers and tour boats, so there will be other people around. To enter the water and out is a little tricky as well, so be prepared. Here's the fun part. The hike back up. It's TOUGH! Sign said 2000ft elevation gain, and it's nearly straight up with no switchbacks. You better have good shoes since you'll be on mostly lava rocks, you'll be exposed to the sun most of the time, bring a lot of water, and be in decent shape. I wouldn't hike it again, but will look into a kayak or boat tour.

Did anyone have a hard time getting out of the water when the tide was low?
Ditulis pada 25 Juni 2019
I climbed in and out of zodiac. Part of the shoreline is rocky and people who had walked in were climbing in and out of the water.

Are there tours availible to Cruise ship passengers to Kealakekua?
Ditulis pada 25 Januari 2019
You should be able to go out there. A know some cruise lines offer excursions there. I would look at the cruise line site and see what is offered.

Hi - I read that you can kayak to Captain Cook. If we want to snorkel as well, is there a place that we can park our kayaks? I don't want to disrupt the coral so any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Ditulis pada 3 Januari 2019
Yes, you can snorkel on your own. I would recommend renting a kayak at Bay Side Adventures and kayaking across the bay. We were able to watch and snorkel with spinner dolphins on our way over to the Captain Cook Monument.

Can I drive right to the bay and rent a kayak /sign up for snorkeling without advance notice?
Ditulis pada 9 September 2018
Yes, the older gentleman’s name is Derrick, he owns Kona Kayaks and can set you up for a kayaking trip at the bottom of Napo’opo Rd. It’s a fun adventure to kayak across the bay. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel gear, as there is excellent snorkeling by Cooks Monument and you may get lucky enough to see spinner dolphins that frequent the bay.

What was the air quality like at Captain Cook bay with the Volcano? Was there a lot of Vog?
Thank you!
Ditulis pada 5 Juli 2018
The Vog level is dependent on Tradewinds. Even prior to recent volcanic events, Kona has the reputation for the most voggy days - especially during summer. It does make for very lovely sunsets ;-) Kealakekua Bay is still very lovely when close to the ocean; especially in the mornings.

How far is the walk from the lot to the bay? Is it a hike? Easily accessible? Any parking fees?
Ditulis pada 14 Maret 2018
All Trails calls it at 3.6 miles, with a 2-4 hour roundtrip time. Also describes it as a moderate hike - there is a 1256 foot elevation change. We kayaked to the monument area so can't comment on parking availability or the difficulty of the trail.

If you take one of the larger snorkeling boats they have proper bathrooms. Nothing on land as far as I could see.
