This was a fun ski area and certainly the best in Wisconsin. Both Minnesota and Michigan have superior ski areas but for those who are skiing in Wisconsin this is a good choice. The one drawback is that their cost is more than comparable places in Minnesota and Michigan.

So Granite Peak's website lists a Saturday Adult all day ticket at $95 and a Sunday Adult all day ticket at $75 for a total of $170 whereas it lists a 2 day ticket at $180. Really? A surcharge for a 2 day ticket? How odd?

The response I got from Granite Peak, "Yes, that is the price. The $180 two-day ticket is for convenience to have the two days on 1 card vs buying the 2 separate days you will have to buy 2 separate cards."

I understand a 2 day ticket including a Saturday will be more than one that does not. Saturday tickets are $20 more than the rest of the days. Why then is a 2 day lift ticked that includes a Saturday priced at $180, or $40 more than the $140 price for any other two day ticket not involving a Saturday?

Can anyone identify another ski area that has a multi-day SURCHARGE!?!?

Nice ski/snowboard area. Large beginners area that is served by carpets and slow triple chairs. Not much for intermediate skiers here. The quads and 6-pack make this place quite fun. About 300' of true vertical and the rest is the "flat" runout back to the lifts. A really nice hill if you are within an hour or so drive. If you are further out, keep going north to the UP. It's worth the additional miles. But GP is a really fun, local hill!

Website is terrible. No hours listed for night skiing. Phone number says it is disconnected. No confirmation email for the tickets I bought. Very frustrating.

Watch for hidden fees!! Tried to book a yearly ski pass for a family member of mine and after over an hour with a new employee, who called me about 4-5 times....I needed to provide a photo on line and have the waiver signed by the family member on line to get it sent out that day. As soon as we pulled up the waivers, it was another $45.00 fee if you didn't give up all your rights for any type of insurance and hold Granite Peak harmless! That means while you were at Granite peak, their restaurants, hills etc... Unhappily I had the family member sign the waiver with the extra $45.00 to pay. (As a business owner myself....NEVER pay the liability insurance for the business....shame on them!) Now the person who was instructing the new girl Hadley, I think her name was Caroline? (real controlling personality) comes on and calls me a liar, that how could my family member be on line with me?! Wow! Pretty bad manners for a salesperson training a new employee and terrible customer service. She now would not send out the pass but told me the family member had to come in to the office to sign the waiver?! Bad news Granite Peak! I will follow up with my business attorneys to even see if that is legal. No call back either after repeated calls for a manager/owner to call me back about this angering experience with their business.

Watch for hidden fees! May even be illegal.. Tried to book a yearly ski pass for a family member and was quoted a price...again, tried to book it on line - was called to say a waiver for insurance had to be signed along with a photo emailed to have thwm send out the pass....when you go in to sign the waiver...if you don't give up all rights and hold the ski hill harmless for any and every type of fall, accident etc. you have to pay another $45.00 to give up all of your saftey rights! Even then, after wasting over an hour of going back and forth with a new employee, I asked for the person who knew what was needed and Caroline? proceeded to call me a liar that the family member could not have been with me to sign the waiver, she didn't believe me and said she would not send out the pass now, that the family member had to come in to the office to sign it! Wow! Terrible customer service and manners as well as harrassing help that wants to have their customers pay their liability insurance for them. As a business owner myself, please do not give up your saftey rights even for $45.00 more! This is a business! Bad news Granite Peak!! (No call back so far after leaving multiple messages for a manager/owner. I'm going to follow up with our attorneys.

Learned to ski at what was then Rib Mountain in the 1960's. Now skiing on a Super Senior Free pass at age 82 with my sister age 85. Best skiing in the state. Excellent ski school. Just put a friend's 6 year old in lessons and he had a great time for four hours of fun. That freed his mom to ski. Food in the beautiful historic lodge is beyond burgers and fries. I had grilled salmon one day and a made to order veggie pizza another. Start beginners on the magic carpet and dont be put off by the black diamond designation for runs at the top. I skied them when a novice and they were rated blue. take a lesson to brush up your skills and have more fun. No need to go further north to have a great skiing experience

OK, don't get the impression from the title that this is a hate review. I don't love Granite Peak, but overall I enjoyed skiing a day at Granite Peak. But of all the ski areas I've looked at on TripAdvisor, it is the one with the least useful reviews. First of all, you should doubt the credibility of any review claiming that it's the best ski area in the Midwest. If you are from Chicago and you mean that it's the best ski area within four hours of Chicago, that's fine. Or to say that it's the best area in Wisconsin is reasonable. But the Midwest is a lot more than that. And according to the standard definitions of the regions of the US, the Midwest includes Terry Peak, Lutsen and Mount Bohemia. There just aren't many people that would objectively put Granite Peak above all of them.

As for my perspective, I don't much care about food or lodging or whatever... I go to ski resorts to ski. And I found parts of Granite Peak that I could ski. I spent most of my time in the "expert" area around the Cupid lift, although I assure you I'm not an expert. I have skied expert terrain in Colorado, cautiously, but understand that some of the "double diamond" runs at Granite Peak would be blue runs out west. People refer to "Midwest ratings", but Lutsen has a double diamond run that's steeper than Pallavacini at Arapahoe Basin, so there are legitimately challenging steeps in the Midwest. Anyway, all I'm saying is that if you look at Granite Peak's trail map and go there expecting legitimate expert terrain I doubt that you'll come away satisfied.

The other issue with Granite Peak is their advertised vertical of 700'. They boast about it a lot, and it's really misleading. First off, that is measured from the peak of Rib Mountain, which is 100' above where the lifts go. Secondly, the remaining 600' is effectively divided into 300' of intermediate or steeper slopes, followed by 300' of beginner terrain that for me just feels like the start of the lift queue. In all frankness, I would like Granite Peak better if they had a mid-mountain lift or two so that I didn't have to bother with the 60% of the acreage at the bottom.

There will be a lot of people for which Granite Peak works really well, and that's great. With my sensibilities as a skier (and starting from Minneapolis), it's not enough better than Welch Village to be worth the drive, it's farther than Spirit Mountain, and it's only an hour closer than Lutsen. And it's not even in the same league as Lutsen for skiing... drive the extra hour.

Great snow the day we were there and the runs are so long compared with other Midwest hills. We spent all day riding up 2 high speed lifts and there were enough runs to keep us busy and excited about coming back!
