This place is a rehab hospital of sorts for Virginia wildlife. Be alert for the open house times and make the (short) visit.

This center offers tours but you need to reservation to have a tour. It is enlightening. One thing I learned which all should remember, do not throw out apple cores or anything other foods out the car windows. Many birds and animals are being killed or injured due to going to the roadway to get the food. They may die and then another animal will come along and possibly get hit by a car and be injured or die.

They save injured wild animals and then release them when they recover. If they cannot be released, then they keep them as ambassadors which is what you see when you visit.

This was my first time at this facility, although I have seen others in different States. It is a wonderful facility that takes in injured wildlife, and under the care of veterinarians, the goal is to return them to the wild. As this is a working hospital, it is not open to the public on a regular basis but does give tours throughout the year or for special occasions. Look on their website to see if a tour is coming up before you plan a trip.

This was a special occasion as it was Buddy’s 10th hatch day. Buddy is an ambassador eagle that is not releasable due to a deformed beak from avian pox when he was a baby. There are other non-releasable birds here that are also ambassadors that go out in public to events.

We got a tour of the hospital where a vet was doing surgery on a turtle that had swallowed 2 fish hooks. It was a very nice hospital, more impressive than I expected. We also had a tour of the grounds and pens of the ambassador birds. The animals and birds in rehab are not on display so as to limit human contact. Hopefully they will all be released when they are healed.

The tour was great and the volunteers exceptional. There is no charge for the tour. Loved my visit here and will return in the future.

The Wildlife Center of Va is an important facility to care for and rehab native wildlife.
As such, is it not open to the public, other than having educational programs, or
setting up an specific appointment for an educational interaction.
It is great to have such a facility in this area, however it would be totally incorrect and
inappropriate to call it an "attraction" on TripAdvisor. I suggest going to their
website possible tours and other educational events that may be offered, as these
things seem to change quite regularly.

we have taken many a injured bird or wildlife creature here. They care so lovingly for all the animals. You get a reference number to ck on the animal which is nice. And we brought in 5 baby birds that were abandoned and were called to see if we wanted to release them. It is a wonderful caring center for all our beautiful wildlife ...I am so thankful they are in our town.

This is a hospital for native VA wildlife so it is NOT open to the public. The ultimate goal for each patient is to be released back into the wild which requires minimum human interaction as possible. There are education animals to see but this requires a scheduled appointment!

It's been awhile, since I've been here, but the 3 times I toured in the past were always a good time and experience. Found it very informative. In building, there was a film and tour with discussion. Went outside for further tour and animal presentations were part of the tour. Don't know what policy is now, but used to be open only on certain predesignated weekends for tours and had to have reservations. It fills up fast. Check web site for open house dates and reservations.

You can't just walk in and tour the Wildlife Center - it's a hospital specializing in healing and rehabilitating native wildlife to Virginia. They typically offer open houses in the spring and fall, and you have to sign up to be a part of the tour. (They fill up fast!) It's a wonderful experience, though, and the work they do is amazing.

One thing that is an option year-round is utilizing the Wildlife Center to help injured or abandoned animals. You can call their number (emergency after-hours number available) if you have questions or to check in with them about bringing an animal in. This is especially helpful if animals likely haven't been abandoned (just appear so) or so they can meet you if an animal is coming in. They also offer adorable t-shirts/sweatshirts/totes/etc. for purchase in the shop as you enter and online, and they are privately funded - so donations are always welcomed and greatly appreciated. (They also have lists for materials and garden donations that are welcomed if you can contribute in those ways as well.) They also have outreach programs and there is a volunteer program for those interested in helping out behind-the-scenes. Oh - and the web cams! You can watch some of the animals at the WCV online.

All in all, not an easy place to put on your 'to do' list for travel unless you are able to get in on a tour - but such a worthwhile organization that does so much good!

After calling ahead, the staff did NOT inform me that an appointment was necessary to enter the education library.
So, after driving 3 hours to visit the center, we were rudely turned away.
Clearly we were interrupting a staff luncheon and couldn't bother them even for a few brochures on what this facility does for the animals.
So much for an educational homeschool field trip on wildlife rescue.
