Stopped here while on way to Villa Romana for lunch. Then visited this church which is baroque and so not very ornate. The interior does have interesting blue and white motifs. Worth seeing if you have time.

Piazza Armerina boasts that it has not just a Church, but a Cathedral, i.e. it is the center of the episcopate. The status of the minor Basilica, assigned by the "red Pope" Giovanni XXIII in 1962, adds symbolic weight. But this great Basil only 4, and small bred a great many. 1753 churches around the world bear the title of "minor Basilica", of which a third -571 are located in Italy. Devaluation. however... The Cathedral itself was built for a century. From 1604 to 1719. The huge dome was completed only by 1768. Due to its location on the hill, the dome is visible from a distance and serves as a good reference point. I couldn't appreciate the Baroque interior because the Cathedral was closed. What to do? Sicily. Siesta...

The Cathederal stands in an imposing position within the town set in an ornate square on top of a hill up a steep cobbled street. It is showing signs of age and has a rather sparse interior.

The wonderful Cathedral of Piazza Armerina. This little and beautiful city, in the middle of Sicily Island, is famous for the ancient Roman Villa, but there are a lot of attractions.

This was one of the easiest churches access in the region. Most of the time we had to park and walk long distances uphill to arrive at the church since most are built on a high point in the city. Here we were able to drive right up to the cathedral park on the piazza and visit the church. Beautiful baroque structure. Worth a visit.

I especially liked the ceilings in the cathedral. They represented several styles incorporated over time.

You always have to go into the Cathedral well, we do anyway, and mostly they go in for being Impressive maybe sometimes Impressive winning out over Beautiful. I sometimes feel that very Baroque style can be vulgar and over the top so coming into the Duomo of Piazza Armerina was a lovely surprise. It has a simplicity which I found really beautiful. The marble has blue veins and the decor of white plaster on blue background is really tasteful, elegant, simple. Don't go through the little metal gates up to the font....I got told off...and as other reviewers have said, it's closed in the middle of the day for I think 3 hours but do visit, it's really really lovely.

Piazza Armerina and the surrounding towns and villages of the Enna offer incomparable views, hikes, art and acheological centers and the city is the most interesting base for their exploration. A pre-Roman town, it harbors houses, castles, and churches from the Greek, Roman, Norman, Turkish, and Sicilian eras. The central cathedral, N.S. de la Vittoria, or our Lady of Victory, was dedicated as thanks for the defeat of the Muslim invaders at the Battle of Lepanto. The fact that it did not change its name to Our lady of the Assumption as did so many churches in the 19th century gives proof of Sicilians' respect for their history and the heroes who defended her right through WWII. It would be worth hiring a truly knowledgeable guide (inquire ahead through the City's offices) for a day to lead a walking tour of the twisting, climbing streets lined with important historic sites from each period of the town's history, then on to Morgantina for hours of exploration of the amazing redoubt of the Sicilian/Greek population that fled the coast and held off the Romans for decades, finally being dragged off in chains, leaving their doors open and their temples unguarded.
According to the internet, Piazza Armerina celebrates the Palio dei Normanni, a re-enactment of the entrance of the Norman Count Roger I (of Cefalu and Palermo fame) to the city. Around August 12-14. I did not attend this festival.

I suspect the "proper" town is often bypassed because of the amazing villa in the valley below. It's worth a short detour to view the Cathedral. After you have feasted your eyes, walk across the square to the cafe, and order one of the home made ices. This is a different kind of a feast altogether. I had a mulberry granita - I will remember it as long as I live.
