A good way to see the famous Chincoteague ponies up close. Narrators explain the history and ecology of the island as well.

We enjoyed a beautiful day to do the trek tour to see some of the northern herd, along with a lot of other wildlife. The guide was very knowledgeable and was happy to stop anytime for you to take pictures from inside the bus (only 1 stop to actually get off the bus). We saw heron, egrets, bald eagles, fox squirrels, and of course ponies.
The bus was a smaller bus with less then 50 on the tour. The tour takes you to the northern area most do not see while on the island. At the turnaround point, you are 3 miles from the Maryland line.
Would definitely recommend checking out the tour when you are in the area. Note, it only runs on the weekend.

Ok here we go.
The first thing I’d like to share with you is the cost it’s $20.00 to enter the park, relax that’s for the car and all occupants in the car for the week or $40.00 for the year and it is well worth it.
The first thing we saw was the wild horses and in the one picture I think it’s a Eagle and my wife thinks it’s a turkey vulture, I will let you decide.
We arrived at the beach, plenty of parking and facilities.
We watched young man fish and we swam, it’s a beautiful, clean beach before leaving the park we went for a walk on the trail.
We will definitely recommend this place to everyone.
See attached pictures.
If you like, please hit the helpful, thank you.

My wife Toni and I took a quick trip down to Chincoteague for our 50th anniversary, stayed a couple of nights in a B&B, and did lots of touristy stuff. One of which was the Chincoteague Natural History Association's wildlife tour. The day before, we took a boat cruise around the island to see the wild ponies, which was marginally successful. The CNHA tour was, by comparison, an outstanding success. We saw three groups (10-20 ponies each group) of ponies along the way as we drove up the access road on the island, almost to the Virginia/Maryland border. Our tour guide provided a nearly not-stop informative narrative about the area, its history, and the sights we were seeing. All in all, a great tour and well worth the money.

We had a great time on our Wildlife Trek this April. The CNHA Interpreter was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us lots of great info about Assateague and the way the island is managed. What's really special about this tour is that you can drive up the access road almost all the way to the Maryland border - which you cannot do on your own. It was a great way to see the northern herd of ponies, especially when we got to stop to get out of the van to see them. The island is beautiful, and we really enjoyed beginning our day there with the CNHA.

We enjoyed this bus tour up the service road through the northern part of Virginia's piece of Assateague Island. While we didn't see an abundance of wildlife on our trip, we realize nature operates on its schedule not ours. We toured lesser seen parts of the island where tourism access is restricted and learned about the ecosystem, ponies, bird species, the pine bark beetle infestation, and other behind-the-scene facts. We did see ponies, wild turkey, and many birds, as well as mosquitoes, and, as cyclists, were given the directions to a secluded beach accessible to bicycles off the open section of the service road. I'd recommend this tour if you are interested in natural history. It's probably the most accurate rendition of how wildlife is managed on the island.

I've been to the refuge countless times. This tour provided a new perspective for me, in that you go down roads and paths to the north side of the wildlife loop that are not generally accessible by the public. Here you are almost guaranteed to get a close view of the north herd, as opposed to driving out and hoping you can catch a glimpse of ponies in the main park area. The tour was also informative and interactive, and they did a good job of providing value without it being too long. For example, our four year old was quiet ok with the duration even (just short of two hours). Recommend, and will also add that it was great for kids because they seek active participation in spotting the animals.

Went in the off season when the tour was free but it would be worth it to pay as well. It was a great way to see ponies and other wildlife without having to hike around on foot. The guide, Bob, was very knowledgeable and provided lots of interesting info about the refuge. If you want a short walk before or after the tour walk over to the lighthouse and hike up for a great view of the area!

When you take a tour like this, with nature it is a hit and miss, but this tour was a major hit. We saw north herd ponies and lots of the foals, an eagle, an osprey, turkeys and the scenery was beautiful. The north herd ponies were laying in the road and we got off the bus to take pictures and witness the stallion of the herd getting the foals to stand up and moved them and the mares off the road and got them moving toward the water. He then decided to start toward the people taking pictures, making it very clear that he really wanted us to leave, and we were very happy to accommodate him and his herd, but it was very interesting to see him handle his herd of foals and mares. Our guide and bus driver was very friendly and knowledgable.

Hello Sally! Thanks for your review, we are so happy that you enjoyed your REFUGETREK! We have been excited to see so much wildlife this season and of course, everyone is thrilled when they can see some pony interactions! Our drivers and Certified Interpretive Guides are all trained in house and regularly attend new training in order to share the wonder of the refuge with our visitors. We never use "outside" contractors to provide tour content for our guests. Thank you for visiting and we hope to see you on another trek again soon!

We took the tour on Friday morning. My family has an 8 year old and a 6 year old. I would describe the tour as more suited to an older crowd. The bus goes out and comes back on the same road. I would have liked a loop to see more of the island. We did get close to ponies because a band of ponies was actually blocking the dirt road and we had to stop and wait for them to move. We got out and took photos. The tour guide was knowledgeable but not engaging for younger children.

Hello!
The world famous Chincoteague Ponies will make the swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island on the last Wednesday in July. This years date is July 26. Its is our understanding from the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company (who own the wild pony herd) that this years swim will be VERY early, between 6 & 9 AM.
