Great slot but not for the claustrophobic or for big people. The slot is as pretty in pics, though I was there on an overcast day and the colors really didn't shine. The first part was nice but the footing is tricky where it is too narrow for to keep walking and you have to prop your feet up on one wall and your body on the other. I got up the slot ok but realized there was not a good place to do the same to go back and it took me a while. I turned around at a pour over that I could not climb though others said it was worth it. Its a long slow slog through deep loose beach sand much of the way. I am good with route finding and we did get slightly lost, as did a large number of other people out there that day. The overcast skies certainly made it hard to get a sense of direction. And there are many paths that break off from the intended route. No cairns at all in the last section where we got lost between Harris Wash and the wash that leads to Zebra. No water in the slot so that helped. It was busy but people were good about taking turns to let people enter and exit the narrow sections. I suggest packing a good amount of patience. Also there is no sign on Hole in the Rock Road, just know it is 8 miles south of Hwy 12 and you park on the right immediately after crossing a cattle guard.

This review is for the zebra slot only, not the entire region or other hiking trails.
Zebra slot Canyon is definitely an interesting geologic feature.
I don't recommend hiking through it alone, because there is opportunity to fall and become dangerously lodged in the slot.
While the zebra slot is interesting, I'm not sure it's worth the hike to get to it, unless you're visiting zebra slot simply as part of your overall excursion.
When I visited I took the combination tunnel slot zebra slot loop trail. Warning: this Trail is a navigational nightmare if you're trying to use a trail map. however, tunnels slot is much easier to get to TimeWise and I found it more interesting than zebra slot.
Don't be mistaken, this entire region is a geological marvel. You are not wasting your time with any hike long or short. Here I'm just saying that the walk to zebra slot might not be worth it if zebra slot is all that's on your itinerary.

I've been lurking around in the Escalante Canyons for over 30 years, and can never get enough of this country, which is why I moved to Teasdale, 70 mile north near Capitol Reef NP, when I retired.

I didn't have the right build for this one but it was still fun to have to climb up to where it was wider and shimmy across to open areas. The small area with the candy cane like feature was amazing. The slot canyon itself is short with freezing cold, almost waist high water in the beginning but still beautiful.
The 2.5 miles or so of hiking up to the entry of the slot canyon makes for beautiful pictures and a great hike then the slot canyon is the cherry on the top.
Be aware the slot canyon is VERY narrow.

The trail to this slot runs east from the Hole-in-the-Rock Road. I have done this slot twice, and Tunnel Slot is nearby as well. Zebra is noted for the interesting texture and faint coloration of its walls. It was water-logged both times I was there, so all of us took off our socks and boots near the entrance, and waded in. The water wasn't bad (can be putrid in some deep slots), about knee-deep, and there were a few tadpoles. There is a moderately tight spot (I had to take my daypack off), and just turn around when you reach a high chokestone, if you feel uncomfortable trying to go further.

Yikes, we found the parking just after the cattle entrance and crossed the Hole in the Rock road to hike to the Zebra slot canyon. Lots of gnats and mosquitos!!!! it's a pretty scenic way in, but got a bit long after a while as it was 5 pm and very hot... just to get to the entrance to find it full of green water and a snake at the entrance!! there was no ways us 2 girls were going to go further in, what a pity! but once you'd get through the green dirty water in the entrance you would see the pretty views of the slot canyon, unfortunately we had to turn around. Sure it was a Gopher but I can't do that!

Zebra Slot canyon was a very strenuous hike but well worth it. Hiking in the views are similar to surrounding area, pretty but not fascinating. Once in the slot it changes dramatically and picture worthy. Road to slot canyon is gravel and washboard. Go early to avoid crowd and heat.

A great hike to Zebra Slot Canyon through the relatively flat plains following hand built cairns along the way. Once we arrived it was noticeable that there was puddle of water at the entrance. Changed hiking boots to water shoes, took off rucksacks and went ahead. Before you knew it you were waist high in freezing cold muddy water! This last for a short stretch when you then had to squeeze through the narrowest part of the canyon - it was a squeeze and at one point I believed I was stuck! With a bit more squeezing and manouevering we were through only to be confronted with an 8 foot high rock which I was unable to climb. Inside the canyon the rock formations and clours were amazing. Recommended for those not carrying excess weight!

Got just a bit of the way in. Water goes up to chest height. If you wade to the back (which we didn’t, but some wet folks told us), there are dead birds and rats in the water. Stick to Spooky gulch and peek-a-boo canyon. Much better.

Zebra is a medium hike to a semi-short slot canyon that's one way in and one way out. It has a few very tight areas and has water most time in the spring thats really cold. Don't go if it's going to rain like any slot canyon! Watch for Moqui Marbles along the way.

Hello!
My husband and I are going to go hike on 26th.
We only have SUV. Would it be any snow over there? I saw on YouTube and some of them are flooded. We would be a very disappointed if we are not able to hike.
Can you please advise? We are visiting from LA. Thanks!

Planning to go there first week of April. Anyone has experience with the water level that time of the year. Shin high water is ok but chest high water seems a bit too daunting. Thanks.

Yikes on the water bugs... hope they are of the friendly kind

Hi Poeguys, in your comment you said that the colors in the Zebra slot weren't as vivid as in others. Which other slot canyons can you advise me with vivid colors?
Thank you

Hi Jeanique9,
you should try Peek-A-Boo Gulch is incredible. Its a 2 1/2 mile hike into the area to access 4 slot canyons (dry gulch, peek-a-boo, spooky and brimstone gulch) the entry into peek-a-boo is a little difficult because you have to climb up. It will be easy for children 7+ years old. I do not recommend taking a dog because the slot is narrow and some climbing (scrabbling) is required. Plan to spend 5-6 hours to explore the 4 slots and hike in and out.
the colors in those 4 canyons are amazing
