There is argument among ruin visitors about whether the Mule Canyon ruin is a really a Chacoan great house or just a larger-than-average ceremonial site. I can't take either side, except to say that the larger-than-average kiva is precisely done, with perfectly laid stone walls and pilasters to hold up the roof, and a very neat air shaft to bring oxygen to the fire. Whatever it is, a lot of skill and care went into its construction. Surrounded by about 20+ rooms, the whole ruin looks to be an important community center.

After visiting Natural Bridges I had planned on stopping for a hike at the Mule Canyon Ruins, but wasn’t sure where the road was. It is not marked. Upon looking at a map later, I realized I had seen the correct road. Oh well.

However, I did stop at the Mule Canyon kiva which looked like all the other kivas in the area so I wasn't very impressed. Had it been the first kiva I'd seen on this trip I might have been more enthusiastic about it. The main benefit of this roadside kiva is it is also a rest stop with a pit toilet so it's a good place to stop if you've got a bit of driving ahead of you.

No excuse for missing this one. It's right off the road, well marked. Also, well preserved. Lots of helpful information on the nearby board.

This interpretive site is visible from SR 95 and signed on the north side of the highway near Mile Marker 101. A short paved walkway led from the parking area to the ruins. The hike around the ruin is short and quick, making this a perfect “quick stop” place to stretch your legs while driving through. Learned that sometime around A.D. 750, a pithouse was built on this site as part of a presumed Pueblo I occupation. However, the site was abandoned for many years until it was re-established in about 1000 and was actively occupied until about 1150. The room block of 12 rooms likely was home to 2 or 3 families. Some of the rooms had doorways but the main entrances were roof entrances. The single-story rooms at the Mule Canyon Ruin likely shared a roof area that was an extended patio for the village.

If you are visiting SE Utah, definitely take this hike, which is home to the House on Fire ruin, one of the more impressive ruins in the entire area.

This was our first stop after seeing Natural Bridges NM. We couldn't find the road for Castle Towers, so I was relieved to be able to find it. There is a sign.
I didn't realize this was actually a rest area. There's a shelter with picnic tables & a pit toilet. The parking area is really large. Large enough for big RVs.
There's a short, paved trail to the kiva & lots of information boards explaining things. All in all a short stop.
The kiva is nice & well preserved. We were the only ones there at the time, so it was quiet too.

This was one of our favorite things we did that day. I recommend a look.

A small site with a few structures and an interpretive sign. I'm not sure if the kiva had any reconstruction, but it was in great condition.

Although it pales in comparison to Mesa Verde, we appreciated the intimacy, and the different environment. The tower here could see the tower at another settlement miles away. The weather was threatening rain, so we only visited the roadside ruins (which is very nicely curated, with interesting boards explaining the site). In other reviews you can see details of visiting the site that is a hike in--I wish we'd been able to see that too.

Location: approx 1/2 mile east of the Mule Canyon roadside ruins. Turn off for Mule Canyon Hiking trailhead is off of mile marker 102. There are no signs just a dirt road going north. Park your car off to the side you’ll see a sign posted walk down the road about 1/3 of a mile down the entry is on the left you’ll see another sign down off to the left where you’ll go down a little step off. Follow the trail right along the dried creek. You’ll see a really big dead pine tree when you’re close. See pictures below. I followed Bigredmachine’s review/Instructions they were very thorough from August 2, 2018. We went with our kids 3/11/13 there was a family with small children between 2-10 years old the hike is fairly easy we brought our 3 year old in a carrier because she will walk for a few minutes at a time so it was just easier than to carry her. If your kid likes walking then you shouldn’t have any issues. The actual house of fire was really awesome to see, there weren’t any people there when we arrived and we were there for about an hour before a couple showed up and we decided to leave them the area to enjoy on their own with social distancing in mind. Worth the hike.

This small park is located right off Highway 95. It is an interesting Anasazi site, first occupied about 750 AD. There is the foundation of dwellings, a kiva, and a tower. The signs at the site give lots of information.
