Breathtaking. A monument made in memory of the fallen (on both sides of the conflict) during the Spanish Civil War. Some consider it the ninth wonder of the world, although due to it's divisive history it is not widely viewed that way. An impressive work of architecture and construction. I almost missed this stop but so glad I was able to see it. Words cannot describe the magnitude of this place. A must in any visit to Madrid.

Really something to see despite its sordid history! It is impossible to accurately gauge the scale of this place from photos. The length of time it takes to walk just from the parking lot to the front door is considerable. Once inside, it takes 10-15 minutes to walk to the crypts at the other end and the size and detail of the interior really makes one feel sorry for the political prisoners and "POW" slave laborers who were forced to construct it. Franco was removed and reinterred elsewhere in 2019 but Jose Antonio, the founder of the Falange party that paved the way for 40 years of fascist repression in Spain, remains and is revered by visitors who leave floral bouquets. The location in the mountains is really beautiful and you get a great view. Worth visiting despite its horrible reality!

This site is quite incredible and well worth the visit. The massive underground construction is both beautiful and horrific. Though the history is difficult to grapple with, the site is well worth the visit.

Costs about 4e each to enter. This place is HUGE. Everything is on a HUGE scale. You can certainly tell that the construction is along the lines of other fascist construction in Germany and Italy.

Visited on a weekday in May and had the place almost to ourselves. Atmospheric place. Silent outside apart from a lonely cuckoo. Inside the underground basilica the acoustics were incredible, the granite angels massive, powerful and awful. No question that this place is all about death. The sheer scale of the effort to create this huge space underground using forced labour was depressing. But very glad we came. This place will stay with me for a long time. Highly recommended.

It was stunning. We took a picnic and sat on the steps to admire the views. Inside it was amazing. It's history is clearly difficult to reconcile but it was built and would be equally difficult to pretend that it hadn't been built.
I think you could spend day's discovering and walking through the spectaular countryside but we just had the afternoon. So went inside and round to the monastery.
Well worth a visit. Check whether the cafe is open and prepare accordingly.

Well worth the trip from Madrid. I'll start with instructions on how to visit, as there is conflicting information online, then put some warnings/things to be aware of.
I took the 664 bus from Moncloa (Madrid) to Valle de los Caídos. Although the signs and online blogs all say that you should look out for the "Cruce Cuelgamuros" stop, the announcement on the bus does not actually say this! The sign and announcement both say "Valle de los Caídos". The bus will drop you off at the bottom of the entrance gates. It costs a little under 5 euros - if you're unsure, just ask "Cuanto al Valle de los Caídos?"
The walk up from the entrance gate is about 5-6km, and took me 1.5 hours. I'm sure a more fit person could walk faster, but I'm also not super unfit, so be aware if you have accessibility or mobility issues. The walk is a bit dicey as there's no real sidewalk so you will have to dodge cars and pine trees every once in a while. However despite the long hike it's quite beautiful, there are many blackberry bushes, and the air is very clean. Follow the signs for the basilica to see the main building.
When I arrived this morning at the basilica, I was one of three people. It was very quiet and (ironically?) peaceful. You have to go through an X-ray and put your bags through as well, and there are limits as to how big your bags can be — my backpack was fine. No photos are allowed inside but on a lazy day like today the security is pretty lax, so photos were possible. I'm not sure if it's quiet due to COVID-19, because today was a Thursday morning, or because they exhumed Franco a couple of years ago, but it was very empty. Besides two security guards hovering over José Antonio's rose-littered grave I could easily avoid all of the other visitors, so it felt like a very personal experience.
If you are interested in saving your calves, there is a bus that departs from the S.L. de el Escorial bus station at 3:15pm directly up to the basilica. I like to do things at my own pace and wasn't sure if it would still be running, so I went alone. However, I saw the bus on my way back down, so can confirm it's still running. The bus number is 660A. As far as I know, a return bus arrives around 5:30pm, which I think gives you plenty of time to really take in the sights.
Overall, well worth the trip and the hike. I'm very interested in the history of nationalist movements in Europe and I found this to be an interesting site. I'm sure that even without the history it would be a breathtaking visit, but I'd recommend visitors read a bit about the Spanish Civil War, the Falange, and Franco's dictatorship before visiting.
Just a couple of warnings: the funicular *and* the cafeteria were closed when I went. I assume it's a COVID thing. There are still bathrooms available at the top of the hike, but as far as I know not the bottom.

I am not into politics. The Spanish Civil War was horrible, but this is a nice place built in a secluded area. The church is surrounded by mountains and pines. I was not thrilled with the idea of going to this valley, but when I went, I was so taken by the landscape! The valley is like a national park in the U.S.
The church is modern, but magnificent.

Very impressive location and monument, definitely worth a visit. Entrance was free when we visited on a Sunday afternoon as europeans. Unfortunately the little tram was closed because of covid.
Make sure you enter inside the church as its very different from any other church you’ll ever see.

A huge monumental complex built by Franco after the Second World War. I am from Eastern Europe, but I have not seen such monumental buildings. It consists of an abbey and a huge stone cross built by prisoners. Below the cross is a huge cathedral dug into the mountain. It can be reached by car, as the entrance is a few kilometers from the Cross.
The entire complex is located a few kilometers from the El Escorial Monastery, and admission is free for EU citizens.
There were no people during our visit, and the hotel area near the cross and the road to the cross itself were closed.

Espero haberte respondido a tu pregunta. Cualquier duda, puedes volver a escribirme. Un saludo

Is there any advantage to buying the ticket ahead of time if I'm taking the bus, and it'll stop for tickets anyway?
Minnie G
London, UK191 kontribusi
Bus 661 from Moncloa interchange (Metro and Bus station) every 15-30 minutes from 0700 - 2330 (reduced schedule on weekends) at a cost of €2.50 each way. Last return is at 2230 and the journey time is no more than 1hr subject to traffic.
There is no requirement for a purchase of ticket prior to arrival. It doesn’t make your entry any quicker, unless you are going via a Coach Party where the entrance route differs for larger groups of tourists.
Just ensure you have your ID or Passport for entry. The site is very protective at the moment.
My advice is to purchase a full ticket for both the monument and the monastery. You get a small discount for both, and there are operators actually located at the bus station.
