Was the museum robbed lately? It's the only reason I can imagine why the staff was so on edge and relentlessly stalking us during our visit. Most staff (excluding 3) were utterly invasive, cloying, and rude. Not only were they in our space, but when they had the decency to move aside, they stood there STARING the entire time we viewed the art. One can understand a momentary acknowledgment while they do their jobs, but they were staring every time we looked up (usually at the gorgeous younger woman we brought as a guest). As members, it was embarrassing and ruined our excitedly- anticipated visit. Pro tip- people take out their phones at times during a museum visit, and if it is pointed toward the floor, they are not taking photographs of the art. It was like being in kindergarten with a librarian dying to find a cause to scold. It is understood the art must remain safe, but this was over the top. It is creepy and off-putting to be stared at while viewing art. This was a singular experience in all of the museums we have visited worldwide. Really, Menil, is this the experience you are after? In a city like Houston, where there are so many museums to consider for membership; this isn't a good look.

This is a hidden gem that I was not aware of. Modern art and a wide range of collectibles. Worth the trip as it is exhibited in a spacious building allowing for very unusual pieces .

The good thing is that it is easy to park and free to visit. We did donate $20. The art is nice, and there are four different buildings to visit. The not-so-good is the staff. We visited while meeting our future foster son with his case worker. She took notes on her phone and was yelled at for taking photos. She was not taking photos but taking notes on our interaction on her phone. I understand the rules entirely. However, if you want to avoid devices in the museum, take them to the entrance. Another time, we used our phone to find a proper definition of Surrealism to explain to the kid. Again, we were yelled at for taking photos, which we were not doing. I have traveled worldwide and been in many art museums but the staff here is over the top. More people watching the visitors than visitors. These people need to realize there are other things to do with your phone than take photos. They have some great pieces but nothing worth all the staff. It served our purpose to spend a few hours with a kid and talk to him. I doubt we will be back.

This is a private collection museum with no entrance fee. I wish the staff is more friendly. I have been to lots of museums in my life all over the world, from the Louvre in Abu Dhabi to Paris, Picasso Museum in Barcelona and Monet Museum @ l’Orangerie in Paris, Montreal, Dubai, Toronto and San Antonio museums and the list goes on. I’ve never seen so many security guards in a museum as much as I saw today at the Menil collection. I understand it’s a private museum, but there’s no need to be rude and disrespectful to people not even touching the artworks. They have thick glass all over their paintings & drawings and they are still so afraid if you get a bit close to the artwork…cameras all around, security guards all around, they are ruining the atmosphere of art completely.
There’s no need for attitude if you are working in the art industry. I am an artist, I did and still do art exhibits, I organize art events and I am a judge in art events as well. I still manage to talk to people in a nice way without attitude.

I even noticed one artwork placed on the wall in a crooked way, and I mentioned it to the security guard, and she was very defensive.
I wonder who is in charge of hiring the staff and the people taking decisions there, but they need to talk to me because I can do better 😃

- The semi inside/outside gardens are very nice.
- The museum is located in a nice park in a residential mixed use area.
- I parked on the street and it was not easy to find a spot, I am not sure if they have their own parking garage, I did not see any!

This museum have potential if the Management is different.
🚫 📸 I don’t understand why we cannot take pictures…if I took pictures or videos clips, I would be promoting the museum for free.
Many of my Houston friends never heard about this place, it is because of me now they know it…imagine if I put them on my YouTube channel, Facebook or Instagram!

I know it takes a lot of work and investment to have this kind of museum and I appreciate the effort. It’s not easy to achieve it and to keep being ranked high between other museums all around.
This is a small museum compared to Boston and New York museums and so many other museums I had been to.

Some of the art collection they have, I don’t really care about, few pieces were interesting.
I’m not trying to give a bad review and to talk negatively because I know this museum was created after long hard work and years of art collecting and investment. I just wish the security people would be less invasive and more respectful.

Thank you for sharing your art with us!

The Menil Collection is an interesting group of galleries/museums. There is an entire building, dedicated to Cy Twombly, which is quite the contrast from the main building, which has antiquities and curiosities, and contemporary art, including some wonderful works by Ernst and Magritte. We thoroughly enjoyed our day, and unfortunately did not have enough time to visit each building. Looking forward to returning. (Don’t miss the Rothko Chapel nearby!) we also had a great lunch at the bistro.

Contains the unique and wide-ranging collection of the Menils in a purpose built contemporary space. Much bigger than we expected. Big, well lit galleries with few dark corners or reflections.
We quickly scanned the Cy Twombly building. Baffled by it. Is it art? Some think so.
Two irritating points: there are few art museums that don't allow non-flash photography of their collections. The Menil only allows pics in the hallway. Yes, it is their museum, but why do this when few others do?
Also, the guards were the most aggressive I've seen since the Uffizi, decades ago. They would follow us around like we were just released from prison.
The Bistro on the grounds has a spectacular setting/space and the menu was so exciting. Sadly, the execution of the dishes we ordered was disappointing.

I'm sorry to say this, as I really wanted to like the Menil, but I just found a lot of the art rather uninspired. They had a few nice ancient pieces, but some of the modern works were just strange rather than intriguing. Also the way the pieces were grouped throughout the museum seemed a bit odd.

I'm glad they didn't charge me for the visit.

This is an interesting collection that was put together by a wealthy couple that escaped Nazi Europe (France) at the early part of WW2. Their source of income was the oil industry and it allowed them to travel and collect art. Their favorite style was Surrealism. It is the largest portion of the collection and there are some big names in it. They have set up the museum to be preputial free entrance for the public. This includes free parking as well.

The remainder of the 30,000 square feet one story museum is filled with art objects from many parts of the world. There are a number of very nice pieces that command attention. There are others that are not quite as interesting or engaging. Other than the Surrealism works, there are very few paintings. This is too bad because there are far too many empty walls in the museum. It makes the interior feel a little too sterile.

There are very nice wire sculptures in the main lobby. The staff at the front entrance is very friendly and helpful. The guards in galleries are not at all friendly and look sad--bored with the job! Photos are not allowed. That always bothers me, because art should be shared. They have a book store (that really is a book store and little else!), But I don't carry my books with me-- l carry a camera!
