Before one visits the memorial it would be beneficial to learn about the tragic event and how the memorial's design pays respect to that fateful day and those who perished. On November 18, 1999, the annual Aggie Bonfire at Texas A&M collapsed during construction, killing 12 students and injuring 27. The 59-foot-high stack consisted of about 5,000 logs. Each section of the memorial is well though out with significance and remembrance. Twelve portals surround the bonfire circle and are oriented toward the hometowns of those who perished in the collapse. Twenty-seven stones with bronze inlays represent the injured students that connect the portals. Leading up to the circle are 89 granite stone representing the prior bonfire years. There is a separate hard to find bonfire parking lot that leads directly to the memorial, so there is no need to walk up and over the lawn - there could be an improvement on campus signage. Tragic event

Beautiful stories of the lives lost in this tragic event. We visited the Memorial at night and having the lit pathway and the well-placed lighting designs added to the overall experience. Seeing this place really makes you feel grateful for the loved ones in our lives and thankful they are still with us.

Easy access and weight in town center. This is a place of silence to pay your respects and to put much of life in perspective. Let’s you appreciate life and reminds you not to sweat
The small stuff in life.

New to Aggieland, I found this memorial thoughtful and a fitting tribute to the lives that were lost in that terrible accident. We went at dusk and thought the lighting added an even greater dimension to the memorial.

The memorial does a great job of preserving the tradition of Aggie Bonfire and memorializing the victims of the collapse. A great place to learn about the Aggie spirit.

This is a powerful memorial for former students and especially those that have worked on Bonfire. I found myself choked up a couple of times.
We went during the day due to bad weather the night before, but I suspect it is even more powerful at night.

What a well thought out memorial with each detail representing the tradition, loss of life and spirit of the Aggie pride. The free booklet offered in the parking lot gives an overview of the history behind the bonfires and describes each detail of the memorial.

We spent approximately an hour reading the plaques and paying our respects.

There are roughly 10 free parking spaces at the entrance of the memorial. If you, like us, get turned around due to construction just keep driving towards the very large white wall that is the entrance (behind lot 51.)
