Stunning Coastal Rain Trip

Criccieth to Aberdovey. Stunning coastal rail trip. Left at 11:53. Returned 15:15. 90 mins each way leaving 90 mins for stroll around Aberdovey and coffee and cake. Thoroughly recommended.

Not bad for an unmanned station

Used the station every day during my recent stay. Only one cancellation which was very inconvenient. Shame the old booking hall is such a mess, let out to private contractors. Flower beds a very nice touch in the old dock platform.

Criccieth Station has not been destroyed like so many others on the Cambrian Line. Good electronic information screens but even better the local group of volunteers are doing all they can to make it more attractive and are succeeding.

Quaint Little Station

A single platform station (with no amenities), just off the main road through Criccieth.

No ticket office or ticket machine, so either book online well in advance or buy on the train.

Decorated with some flowers and childrens paintings, but otherwise could do with a bit of a tidy. We sat on a bench, sheltered from the pouring rain, watching rain water pouring down a wall due to a broken drainpipe and it looked like it had been like that for some time.

Clean & Tidy, good train time displays

Good location in centre of Cricceith, good train time information and details re local area.
Suggest coastal walk to Porthmadog with fabulous views, train back.

Local children's paintings, history and photos were shown at the station. Several little flower beds were there. Very quiet area.

Central to the town, single track services to Pwllheli and Porthmadog running roughly every hour. There's no ticket office here, so buy on the train (or in advance). The station has been adopted by the townsfolk and is decorated with local pieces of interest.

So Close To Sea Front

This station is a very short walk from the shops, post office, pretty tea rooms, bed and breakfast establishments, hotels, post office, pubs and restaurants. Criccieth Castle is a ten minute walk away . The long bay at the bottom of the town is equally a short distance. However, if on foot and have heavy luggage the walk may seem too long to the other long beach behind the castle.

A very serviceable station

As the other review mentions this is on the coastal railway line going to Phweheli. In the other direction to can go onto to Birmingham international if you want to via Porthmadog, Harlech etc
But your tickets on the train!

Cambrian Coast Line

Me and Hubby were at this location on a recent Tuesday. Believe it or not, this is a main line train station which originally opened in 1867. Its route is on the scenic Cambrian Coast Line between Pwllheli and Machynlleth. There is limited signage for the actual station which can be reached on foot either by walking from The Square (Y Maes) right to the far end of the large car park (past the free public toilets)...or from the main A497 High Street down the access lane by Criccieth Gallery Antiques Shop.

There are hardly any facilities here - no toilets or ticket office/machine. There is a pay phone which only accepts bank cards (no cash). There is a visual departure and arrival screen with audible announcements. There is only 1 platform with about half a dozen trains running every couple of hours or so (no night trains).

I liked the Victorian metal veranda and the old-fashioned lanterns. The old station buildings are currently being used by a small business (TV repairs) but they are now up for sale and the possibilities are endless......
