The Upcountry History Museum is tucked away in downtown Greenville’s Heritage Green area, which comprises a group of museums & other cultural attractions. Its mission is to present the history of the Upcountry of South Carolina, and it does that expertly in a series of small but very attractive galleries enhanced by period-representative architectural & daily life scenes with concise signage. They have free parking on a dedicated side lot (look for the sign along Atwood Street near Buncombe), the front desk staff is friendly & engaging, the layout of the two-story museum is easy to navigate (with stairway & elevator options between floors), and they have a small gift shop to browse for a variety of gift items. My wife & I visited to see the special exhibit of Civil War-themed quilts, but we equally enjoyed perusing a couple of other traveling exhibits with more modern history themes & the Museum's permanent collection. You can easily cover the Museum space's exhibits in an hour, and we'd recommend you & your family visit.

Are there any persons of color on the curatorial staff? The early section about the indigenous Cherokee population felt tacked on and that it was only working towards the goal of the colonial settler's experience.
And then you have the Black experience. There was no mention of slavery (aside from a brief mention by an actor in a video) until the pre-Civil War section and then it was hidden in a corner to the point where I almost missed it. Even that written description made it seem like the enslaved experience wasn't that bad (hey, the conditions were hard, but at least your owner was working beside you!). Things were a little better once you got upstairs, with the Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights-era displays. It is strange though that Jesse Jackson doesn't have a stand-alone feature, everyone who had one of those seemed to be white and male.
Even the millworker experience felt white-washed. The conditions were horrible, but at least there were sports teams!
I did think that the presentation of the museum itself was excellent, with the reconstructed building fronts. It just needs to fresh curatorial approach to presenting difficult topics. While the museum was exceptionally clean and well-maintained, it did feel due for a refresh, so hopefully that will come soon and with a multi-cultural curatorial team at the helm.

This museum offered a good overview of the history of the upstate beginning with the natives, to the early settlers, through the American Revolution, to the Civil War and slavery to the industrial era with the textile mills to the rejuvenation of the Reedy River. All was well done with the displays and information. There were a couple of temporary exhibits. One featured the Looney tunes. The other featured War Dogs with amazing wooden sculptures of dogs trained to serve the military. That exhibit is ending soon.
You can expect to spend one or two hours depending on your interests. There is parking behind the museum and free parking on weekends at a nearby lot.

While in Greenville, I visited this museum. This is a great place to learn about the South Carolina Upstate region. This museum teaches you in great detail about the history of the South Carolina Upstate. Best of all, it was a great value.

Had a wonderful weekend getaway to Greenville and was so surprised to find such high quality restaurants and cultural places to visit. There are three museums right next to each other so we chose a rainy Saturday to visit them. Very well done with a friendly knowledgeable staff.

We visited as a something to do on a rainy day and found so much more! The traveling exhibits for White Christmas and Peanuts were terrific. The permanent collections were interesting and well presented. So much more than what we expected ...

How busy is the Thomas Exhibit on the weekends? Is it packed, should we consider a weekday? We have a 3 year old who does better if it isn't too crowded. We live 2 hours away and are planning a day trip to Greenville, but it would be great to not have to burn a vacation day! TIA

The parking is right behind the building, not far from the entrance. I can't say for sure about the handicap parking. I would presume there is a requirement for a couple of spaces, though.

How big is museum and how long does it take to go through it?

The museum is not that large, but I guess you need an hour or so. Of course the time you spend will depend on the detail you choose for yourself. The displays change from time to time so you may want to spend more or less time and that up to you.
The building is 2 stories and I think well laid out so you move along.
It's a lovely museum.
