This is such a cool place to shop. Actually all of downtown Lancaster seems like it has had a face lift. We found so many interesting things to buy in Building Character at very reasonable prices.

My mom and I visited here during our trip to Lancaster for the day and had a great time walking around and viewing the vendors. The building is very unassuming and we weren't sure what to expect out of the alleyway walk in but it surpassed our expectations. I felt like there is a small business shop here for everyone. It's great that you're able to shop multiple vendors and pay all at once. I would definitely recommed this place to anyone looking to see great small business crafts and collections for an hour or so.

Had such an awesome time walking through the large warehouse. Each booth has artwork from so many talented local artists. Also some great vintage finds. Definitely one of the gems of downtown Lancaster.

This group of shops isn’t quite as advertised. It sounded like it would be great handmade crafts and vintage. In fact it was pretty disappointing. Very little vintage worth shopping for and the crafts weren’t really up to the caliber of other shops in town. Wouldn’t recommend.

This nondescript building was a cool refuge from a hot summer day and allowed us to walk off a big lunch, too. Just like other antique and vintage shop, there are many things of interest and lots of reminders of days gone by. Vintage clothes that reminded me of my mother's mother and her friends. Toys and book collections from the 60's with some new star wars collectibles also on sale. But the most important treat for me was the re-purposed furniture and many other recycled products. I admire creative people who can make an old t-shirt into a striking and useful cluster of string necklaces or create jewelry from soda can tabs! Such an eclectic group of artisans and vendors. Will return to spend more time.

This multiple warehouse, stall style shopping center was a bit closer to a regular flea or antique mall than what I expected from the listings. That being said, there are spaces with something for almost everyone. There are artist spaces, jewelry, antiques, furniture, vintage, etc. I found several items for myself and several to bring back for friends. It was fun to explore the multiple spaces and see what was around all the corners. (The bathrooms are through the printing museum and require a key.)

What a great place to look around for items you might not see elsewhere. A real potpourri of new and old items. Some might even be collectibles. You can spend a good deal of time here having fun just looking, but don't be surprised if you walk out with the purchase of something fun and useful!

I have lived in the Lancaster area for 37 years. Friends have told me many times about this place, but I never got there, until Saturday. It is an old warehouse shared by many antique dealers and crafters. It was a lot of fun browsing. As I didn't have time for real shopping, it's on my list to visit for Christmas gifts. Don't miss it.

We were drawn to Building Character because of its tag line of "Vintage, Recycled and Handmade," and while we felt it wasn't quite as advertised, this was a fun place to stop and look around. The best part is that some of the vendors have larger stores in the area, so if you like what you see in their space in Building Character, you can go check out their main shop.

BUiLDiNG CHARACTER is Downtown Lancaster's largest retail store offering vintage, recycled and handmade goods in 10,000 square feet of historic warehouses. We are also home to the nonprofit Heritage Press Museum, a working 1920s print shop which is open Thursday through Sunday. BUiLDiNG CHARACTER is open 7 days a week 10-6 Monday through Saturday and 12-5 Sundays. We have nearly 70 individual "shops" with a centralized checkout to purchase any of the amazing creations and finds from those shops. BUiLDiNG CHARACTER and our sister shop Madcap & Co. is located on the 300 Block of North Queen Street, which is where most of the city's shopping can be found.
