Xishuangbanna Daizu Garden
(西双版纳傣族园景区)
Tourists pay an entrance fee to the Daizu Scenic Area. Then take a buggy to visit the many sites of interest; we only focused on the temples and market. (There are plenty of places to eat and a cultural show if of interest. ) The woven Buddha was a highlight. Beautiful location, historical sites and spacious natural surroundings.

Avoid this “village.” More like a small town with a tourist golf cart lap to a few random sights that are not really worth a visit. No local handicrafts, all factory made junk. Hard pass.

The name implies it is in Xishuangbanna but actually 1.5 hr drive away. The Garden is big and includes a living Dai village with real people and community, a famous old temple (see separate review under 'Olive Dam'), arenas for dance performances and water splashing festival show. All included in entrance ticket.
Lots of children and tourists with a somewhat theme park feel. There is a daily water splashing festival show which this garden is famous for. Don't pay extra like us to seat upstairs for an unrestricted view. Other than a bottle of free water, there is not much to see anyway unless you have children who want to join in for some water fun, The 40 min cultural dance show was more geared for quantity than quality. Lots of dancers but rather average performance. The colourful costumes may be more appealing to foreigners or photographers but nothing really special, Can't help feeling the place is getting too commercialized and performers are playing their routines routinely.
For a taste of the Dai village culture, the ManZhang Dai Village (勐養 曼掌村) offers a much deeper and personalized experience.

The only "cultural activity" we saw was the water festival that is performed daily. But it seemed more than routine than an authentic experience, so it is much more to recommend to visit during the water festival period in Xishuangbanna to have the real thing. Otherwise there was not much interesting in this village. The food was the same food you can get at every night market in Xishuangbanna and stores did not have anything special. We saw this trip as a waste of time, especially as it is so far from the city, and left very quickly again to make it to the Elephant Park.

Takes about 1 to 1.5 hours drive from city centre to the village. Dai tribe has about 2 to 3 million people and is the biggest tribe in xishuangbanna.
You need to buy buggy ride ticket to take you around as the villsge is big. There are water pouring ceremony in the park and followed by a cultural dance performance for about 40 mminutes covered by your entrance ticket price.
Encourage to visit this village to understand Dai tribal culture.

We went there last year at this time but my review got lost...? My host at our guesthouse took us to this village. The Dai people (Tai) are a minority people but these small villages have held onto some of their culture. There was a mid day dance ceremony that some people could join in. Potery, food and art to discover. It is a little touristy but we enjoyed our day as it wasn't far from Jinghong.

Conveniently close to Jinghong there is no entry fee but we paid our guide, arranged by our driver (but there are plenty of villagers waiting!), a small tip. She gave us a brief tour of some of the village, including a fascinating visit to her family home and then left us to wander around the rest of the village, including the temple. Nothing special but I felt that we had seen a real Dai village with real Dai people more or less going about their daily lives.
