We hired a taxi off the street for CNY 400 and agreed we would visit for 4 hours. If we did it over we probably would say 5 hours. There are 2 tolls of CNY 20 each and that was included in our price but make sure. We walked to the end of the canyon in less than 1 hour and then back. The canyon cost CNY 41 and was nice but probably not worth the cost of the taxi with entry unless you also visit the free canyon 1.5 kilometers before arriving- it's on your left side and easy to see. We knew to visit this canyon but didn't know how far it would go. We probably walked about 1/2 hour in plus we went to the hill right in the beginning. This canyon was so much prettier than Kuche so don't miss it! We are not sure how far we could have walked but doing over we would give ourselves at least another 90 minutes here. Don't forget your passport.

Due to rain, the authorities closed the entrance to everyone - afraid of flash flooding and landslides.
The entrance to the Canyon looked spectacular and disappointed that we could not walk inside.

The drive to the Canyon from Kucha provided landscapes that we have not experienced before- unbelievable to say the least.

Kuqa Grand Canyon is a beautiful place, where you can walk around 1 or 2 hours through a (at our time) dry river bed. There were not many people, so it was a quiet and wonderful place. During our visit it was very sunny, but there are enough shadow places. You need an own car or driver to go there.

There are a few river canyons in the area. The one that most tourist visited and on most photos are abt 1 km down the road. It requires an entrance ticket.

I visited another canyon. It is by a small car park just before the entrance to the main canyon. Once entered, it is a flat walk along a river bed. It ia likely to be all connected by the river but we did not explore the whole length. However, I think there are risks of flash floods after heavy rain so a good local guide is important. The canyon that charges entrance fee may also provide advice.

On the 15th (and 16th) of May 2018 we made a tour around Kuqa visiting the Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves, Kuqa Canyon, Beacon Tower and the Mosque of Kuqa. The next day we visited the Subashi Temple ruins and the Kuqa Royal Palace.
1. The 15th we departed by car with our taxidriver from our hotel at 10.00 (Beijing time), went to the Thousand Buddha Caves and arrived, after driving about 1 ¼ hour from the caves, at 15.30 at the Kuqa Canyon. Unfortunately we arrived late, because we had quite a lot of delay in the morning at the caves because it rained (and entrance under that circumstances was not allowed in the caves). So we had to hurry a little in the canyon. We stayed at the canyon from 15.30 until 17.30. After all, it was sufficient time to have a good impression of the canyon.
2. During the 2 hours we visited the canyon, we have seen at most 15 other visitors.
3. Because it was still clouded, we experienced that with clouded weather we could make the best pictures because there are no hard shades because of sunshine. Advise: try to visit the canyon with clouded weather or early/late to make good pictures.
4. The entrance fee was 45 yuan per person.
5. After 15 minutes of walking it looks like the canyon is blocked by large rocks and you think it is the end. On the contrary, after climbing some steps you’ll enter the nicest part of the canyon.
6. In the canyon is a snack shop, with a terrace, where drinks are served. We reached it after about 40 minutes.
7. On different places in the canyon are maps with the names of the lookout points. Unfortunately only in Chinese.
Summarized, the Kuqa canyon was a highlight during our holiday in Xinjiang. Go to visit it, before mass tourism discovers this hidden gem.

We visited this spectacular canyon/ravine 30 October 2017 in the late afternoon. The rock formation is a conglomerate that has been cut through by a river leaving a narrow ravine with 30 metre high sides over 2 km long. The flood escape islands with ropes left dangling are an optomistic feature since a flash flood roaring through here would leave little chance of escape!
There are fairly clean toilets at the entrance so it beggars belief that there is excrement and paper in various parts of the canyon. A bit of education re when and where to relieve oneself would be useful.
I would rate this 5=excellent but the poo detracts somewhat, hence only a 4=good.

Easy hike through a very narrow canyon. It was crowded, but worth the visit. Canyon is prone to flash floods so beware! Wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet and dirty.

While the scenery on route to the canyon is austere and beautiful, the canyon is truly impressive. It's an easy couple of hours hike out and back with time for photos. Be prepared for plenty on Chinese groups with lots of camera gear, but many of the best shots are up, so you won't have other visitors in your pictures.

There is also another canyon shortly before this one that is used regularly in films. There is a raised walkway running into it. This canyon is free and we had it to ourselves.

This place is amazing!! We hired a car for the day to take us around to four main sights for ¥500. The entry is ¥45 and definitely too low! What a beautiful canyon! Wear sneakers as you will walk through the sandy bottom of the canyon and your shoes might get wet as there is a stream running through. Do not go if there have been rains as it is prone flash floods. Really incredible place that takes about an hour by car but must see!!
