I went to Chapin Forest Reservation on Friday October 31st and Monday November 2nd with the goal of hiking all the trails. It had been many years since I had been here, and I forgot how unique the various rocks and geological formations were. This is a large park with over 6 miles of trails…more if you count the connectors… and two entrances. The main entrance to the park is off rt 306 and there is another entrance off Hobart Road. This park had quite a few people in it, but I was able to have alone time walking the trails too. Most of the trails are crushed stone but most all have some up and down. There are a few trails such as the Lucky Stone Trail that have sections that are more rugged, and I was glad I had on my hiking boots as it had been raining all morning.

On Friday I started at the first parking area on the 306 entrance and stitched together the Sone cutters, Quarry, Turkey, and Lucky Stone loop trails for a hike of just under 4 miles. The only place I had to backtrack was the Turkey Trail as it connects the Quarry and Lucky Stone Trails together. The Stone Cutters trail is short, leading to a creek where you can see evidence of the stone blocks being cut out of the stream bed. The Quarry Trail has great views going all the way out to Lake Erie and the Fall color was excellent. The lucky Stone Trail takes you through some cool geological formations. Nice hike.

On Monday I parked at the Hobart Road entrance and made a hike out of the Beach Woods, Whispering Pines, and Arbor Lane trails of just over 2 miles. This is a nice walk with only moderate up and downs. Most of the paths here are also crushed gravel but the short Whispering Pines trail is unimproved and there were quite a few trees over the path. A windstorm over the weekend may have contributed and it also took away most of the fall leaves too. I prefer the section off route 306.

Nice long series of different type trails. Some easy and others challenging.
Signage is not very good in areas of the trails, so you need to walk this place a few times in order to learn the paths.
One junction in the Lucky Stone Loop trail is not marked at all and you end up in someones back yard. This is the natural trail that can be difficult for some. The main tails are easy and extremely wide with packed gravel.
I walk with dogs and one thing I must say is that dog walkers are doing a good job of picking up after their dogs here. I rarely see any waste laying around. Not like another nearby park where the dog walkers are a disgrace.
There is a scenic lookout here that is spectacular. You can see Lake Erie and the downtown skyline. Just beautiful.
There are restrooms at each parking area. Very convenient.
Like this place a lot.

If you want to walk at least five miles in a park, and not repeat repeat large sections of trail, this is a great park for you! Cross country skiers and snowshoers will also love the winter trails (as long as we have enough snow!) And there are pavilions for those who want to picnic (they are reservable) as well as a gentle sledding hill for the young. During snow season, skis and snowshoes are available to rent. Make sure you know where you parked (or where you are meeting friends) as there are two very different entrances to the park! You can hike to the overlook from either one, and, especially on a clear day, you'll have a wonderful view of downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie from there. If you're unfamiliar with the trails (and don't want to end up at the wrong parking lot) go online and print out a park map before you venture out.

Chapin Forest Reservation offers a lot.... in all seasons. There is ski and snowshoe rental in the winter, wildflowers in the spring, a grand viewing spot for 4th of July fireworks (just climb up to the quarry overlook... you'll see fireworks all along the lakeshore), and wonderful fall wandering through the changing forest. There is also a shelter, good restrooms, and a playground area for children. There are a number of hiking options, and you may want to check a map before you set out, as there are parking areas on both sides of this park and you might not want to discover that you've ended up at the wrong one after a wonderful hike!

Chapin Forest is a surprisingly large park of something like 400 acres. If you look at a map, it's more or less in a figure 8 shape so it's like two 200-acre parks next to each other. The main route is off of route 306/Chillicothe Road, but there is also a second entrance, dedicated to cross country skiing, off of Hobart Road (which itself is off of Route 6).

In any case, this is a heavily wooded park with lots of trails that are good for walking. Parts skirt along one or two quarries with dramatic views that look more fitting for the west than Ohio. There are also high points from which you can have nice views over five miles or so of woods up to Lake Erie.

There are lots of picnic facilities and parking areas along the way.

This is a very nice park to have a nice walk most months, and cross country skiing when there is snow on the ground.

This location is less than a mile from home, so we like to hike the different trail. Nice place to cookout and a newer pavilion.

The hike at the end of the entrance road is a steeper climb. But getting to the top leads to a view that looks all the way to Cleveland and lake Erie. It also overlooks a quarry where I think rock was cut for the historic Kirtland Temple . Also there are ledges to wander around. And the big tail eventually connects you to Chapin Arboretum , also in Kirtland, off Hobart Road. The two other picnic sits in the Forest have play equipment for young children and trails for walking. This is climax forest. Many specimens for leaf collectors!

The first thing that you should know is that this park has two entrances. So, if you are planning on hiking, make sure you know where you parked! One entrance is off SR306 and the other off Hobart Road. In the winter, if you want to rent snowshoes or cross country skiis, you'll want to park at the Hobart Road entrance. For hiking, I think that either entrance is fine! If it's a clear weather day, make sure you head to the ledges where you can get a great view of Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland. Also, since the park is open late, that same ledges area is a great viewing place for multiple fireworks displays on July 4th.

Be forewarned -- this park has two entrances! If you are meeting someone, make sure you specify the parking lot as well, as the entrance off Route 306 has several parking lots! Once that's out of the way, this is a good park for hiking and the view from the top is fabulous! On good days, the skyline of Cleveland is clearly visible, as is the lakeshore area. In fact, since the park is open until 11 pm, this is a great park from which to view fireworks on July 4th -- you can see them up and down the coastline! Picnic pavilions and a nice playground for children complement the hiking areas. Be sure to check for special programs offered through Lake Metroparks -- especially the Quarry Hike. The old quarry area (below the lookout area) is off-limits unless you are with a guide. The quarry provides a great view of the look-off area as well as insights into plant succession as native vegetation replaces the stripped quarry areas.
