What a truly magical place. Yesterday I stumbled across this amazing place. It felt like I was walking through a Constable landscape painting. It was incredible. Well worth going ‘off - piste’ for a visit
If you can - walk to the unfinished summer house and stop to admire the beauty that surrounds you. There were hardly any people there when I visited and I had the whole place to myself so I could immerse myself in the English countryside

Visited this beautiful property with my Dad whilst staying in the area. The site has a very well kept garden (as per usual with the NT), an orchard, a lake, an impressive garden lodge (which symbolises the owners' Catholic faith), and delicious cake in the tearoom.

One thing to improve on would be the audio tour: it is basically good, but a few signs in the different rooms of the lodge, indicating which numbers on the tour correspond with which rooms. For example, I heard the description of the location of a statue, but it took a while to work out which room is was in.

Nevertheless, a very enjoyable visit and thanks again to NT staff!

Mother and I came here on our way to Cambridge from Lincoln. The cafe was excellent, the staff had a big group coming in yet they took the time and trouble to see Mum and I were ok. I have autism, and they were really understanding. I walked around the monument afterwards, it was interesting, and the exhibition in the manor house brought things to life. Well done and lots of love to you all xxxx

Stunning Elizabethan building that simply never got finished, has a long family history who had many properties in the area. Set in acres of grounds, with orchards, moats, wildflower meadows and a grass labyrinth this is a must see if you are in the area. In the old manor house is a café/shop, indoor and outdoor eating areas and upstairs a common room with sofas, books and a second hand book shop. The "new bield" is just a shell as it was never finished, fully explorable with a spiral staircase to see upper areas. The stone carving is beautiful and still crisp, this is a 400 year old building. Around it are acres of parkland to wonder and this has to be one of the quietest places I have been to.

Quite peaceful visit nice to get away from all the noise and chaos of modern day life. Great cafe / restaurant and interesting info on place. Would like to buy some of produce from orchard, plums and apples.

While in the area we decided to make a short detour & visit Lyveden, there is plenty of parking on site where you are met by a national trust team member to introduce the property to you. Make sure you get a map of the price as some of the signs need a little to be desired of so you don’t know where your going.
It is a bit of a walk to the house from the car park & there isn’t a proper footpath for some of the walk through the orchard which isn’t mowed so make sure you have decent foot ware on.
The house could of been very nice if it had been finished with views for miles & it shows how well it was made to be still standing today without a roof, today’s houses wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the same condition. You can enter the ground floor of the house only partly due to their being no floors in the building.
On returning to the car park there is a small cafe to have a drink & snack & also toilet facilities.
In summary if you are in the area & are a national trust member it is worthwhile visiting but I wouldn’t make a long trip out to see it.

It's a lot more posh now. When we last came here you came past the manor house then turned up an unsurfaced road between a farmer's field and the manor house. It was quite a long and bumpy ride to the car park which was around the back at that point in time, about half a mile from the surfaced road. There was no access to the manor house back then but what was available was all within quite a short walk from the car park. The roofless New Bield, lived in only by pigeons nowadays. A cottage which had an eating establishment in it which did an amazing cream tea. That cottage is now a National Trust holiday let property. And the gardens.

When we came today the entrance was before the manor house and had big wooden gates, a proper tarmac drive and a large car park with a proper surface. Much posher. The eating place has now moved into the manor house and is also much posher than before. The only public access that we could find to the manor house was for the eating place, so I'm guesssing that the manor house is still a work in progress.

Sign posting was abysmal, so please ensure that you pick up a guide leaflet at the brightly-painted gipsy caravan next to the car park. Nowadays you have to walk a very long way to find the roofless building, up through the orchard and then have to try to find your way across various sections of moat. Sign posts are badly needed but for the time being it's trial and error. You can see the building on the horizon, but how do you actually reach it?

We decided to come back down on the road next to the cottage but that was also filled with frustration and lack of signage. We assumed that we would be able to cut across from the road to the manor house but all the wooden gates had enormous padlocks and chains on them. We found one where the padlock had been removed, went in past a place with piles of chopped wood and then were told by a member of staff that it was no entry. She claimed that there was a 'no entry' sign on the gate but there wasn't, just a red circle with a diagonal line and no words. Signage definitely isn't their strong point here.

We bought our cream tea and rhubarb flapjack and went to sit outside so that we could be sure of social distancing. The wall of the manor house had loads of small holes in the mortar (see photo) which had wasps and hornets constantly checking out all the hundreds of holes, presumably to see whether there was anything inside which they could eat. Fortunately they left us alone which is more than I can say for the flies. Never known an NT property before with so many flies. Some of the dragonflies around the moat were really beautiful but most of the flies were more annoying and less beatiful than the dragonflies or the butterflies.

So this was very much a 'warts and all' review but please don't let that put you off. This is a great property and definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend the rhubarb flapjacks and the cream teas are still excellent. Definitely a posher place than it was before. Just make sure you bring your hiking boots.

Fantastic venue. Much more interesting than I had imagined. Lucky with the bank holiday weather so that a relaxing coffee and shortbread on arrival in the sun was great. The cafe in the recently improved manor house is excellent with happy helpful staff and a nice sheltered outside area.
The walk to the lodge, although mainly uphill was helped by the recent long spell of dry weather. The cowslips in the orchard area are almost unbelievable for an endangered flower. Felt like millions of them. Wonderful!
The lodge although incomplete in the late 16th century is interesting with much to see and admire. Its situation up high offers great views and lovely ealk back via the moat etc.
Lunch, again outside was perfect to end my first visit after a tour of the manor house.

Much improved since our last visit and now that the Manor is now open. The cafe is now in the Manor and was very pleasant! We had been before so knew our way round but felt the signage could have been improved especially when going up to the Lodge.
Will return when the apples are growing in the orchard!
Great place though.

Our expectations were low when visiting this property and expected to be there around an hour however that wasn’t the case. The walk from the cafe to the unfinished building through the orchard and up the hill produced beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the sight of Lyveden was impressive. We were lucky that the day was bright and although some of the ground was muddy and waterlogged we could make our way without slipping.
Lyveden is stunning and the architecture had it been finished would have portrayed a wonderful house. Inside has information boards and what’s really interesting is the dated “ graffiti “ of historical interest. We were told that the roof had been removed to place on the master’s house at the nearby Oundle School.
We walked back via what appeared to have been a moat following the road back to the coffee shop that sells good coffee. We’ll worth a visit if you’re in the area.
