Scale is massive

Did the tour on bicycle which makes it nice with kids. Being under the canopy makes it easier than Chichen Itza (but I would not choose one over the other)
Did the tour with a great guide which puts a lot of things in perspective

Disappointed
Apr 2021
We were in RM for 8 days with our kids and wanted to go see atleast one of the Mayan Ruins. We chose Coba because from what I read and understood this was the last of the Ruins where you can still climb up the pyramids. Needless to say we were disappointed to find out that this is no longer the case. Due to COVID restrictions all of the pyramids in Coba have been roped off. It is still impressive to see the ruins...I would suggest to bypass the guides and go straight to the bikes. The site is very large and spread out and bike is the best way to see it all....just don't expect to climb any pyramids.

Incredible Mayan ruins--a must-see if you're in the area.
Mar 2021
The Mayan ruins of Cobá are a huge complex of temples, pyramids, ball courts and more. The 3 main areas within Cobá cover about 80 square kilometers. To really see this site, you should expect to spend the better part of a day; otherwise, you’ll have to pick and choose what you want to see.
The tallest pyramid in the Nohoc Mul complex is 42 meters (138 feet) tall and the city is estimated to have had a population of about 50,000 at its height. Cobá was first settled about 50 BC and was occupied until about 1500 AD, but was abandoned before the Spaniards reached the area.
You can rent a bicycle to get around, and they also have bicycle rickshaws that you can pay to have you get to or from one area or another.

You can not climb it any more!

The Coba ruins unfortunately were closed for climbing, this was the only reason we have chosen to go to Coba, I would recommend to go to Tulum or Chichen Itza because they are in much better condition.

Such a breathtaking experience
Feb 2021
First of all, the bathroom at the entrance is awesome! (for someone coming in with a little stomach distress). Parking was super convenient and no extra charge. Also, it was great there was a vendor area at the entrance and none inside of the entrance. The constant peddling of goods at Chichen Itza were its only downside, which wasn't a problem at Coba. Definitely must rent a bike. It is quite a walk to the different sites, unless you need a few more miles extra walking. The bike made all the sites convenient and accessible. At the time I went, they must have just shut down the climbing up the main pyramid. I was sad about that, but it was still beautiful. I also didn't see the huge tour buses that you see at Chichen Itza. I was surprised I wasn't bothered by bugs, because it is amongst swampy areas. So beware about that. The plaques and guide services are very useful and informational.

Easy to see how Mayan towns were swallowed by the jungle
Jan 2021
Our second stop of the day after Tulum. Our stroll around the Coba site was breath-taking. Like at Tulum, you definitely will want to get a tour guide if you don't have one ... otherwise you'll miss the bulk of the site's story! We were there mid-day and the crowds weren't too hideous (although this was during Covid period, so take this with a grain of salt). Just walking in the entrance, you quickly get an idea as to how so many of the Mayan towns were quickly swallowed up by the jungle with the way trees were growing up through the ruins. It's not Chichen Itza but it is a better use of time if you're looking to include Tulum in your day.

Wonderful site

Got there on the Oriente from Playa del Carmen main bus terminal. it's the one that goes to Merida at 0830 and 0930, MXN$100. It dropped us off as the road turns left near the lake in Cpba and did a U turn. Had a nice juice before visiting the site. Didn't find bicycles necessary and had a lovely walk.

The return Oriente comes every 2-3 hours. We were told roughly 1430, 1700 and 2000. We waited at the same spot by the lake until 1930. I spotted an Oriente far down by Hotel Sacbe and legged it and got it back. Probably safer to wait a bit further down although we had seen pickups from where we were.

Magical!
Des 2020 • Pasangan
My husband and I have traveled Mexico extensively and have visited many archaeological sites. By far, Coba is my favorite.

The energy was so serene, the ruins were many and the site was vast. You can rent bicycles or hire a tricycle taxi. We didn’t take a tour, but our driver was a wealth of information.

Definitely a must see when in Cancun it Tulum!
