Do not miss this on a visit to Tepic. This is an old colonial house from the historic quarter that has been converted to tell the story of Nayarit. The museum is not heavy on the colonial influence, but the focus is more on the various tribes native to the Nayarit region. There are lots of displays on their communities, especially the plethora of underground tombs that have been uncovered in the area.
There was also a special exhibition on the culture of peyote. This is really well curated, I’ll say. There is everything from a scientific and biological examination of the plant to long stories on how the natives mix it with their cultural rituats, and finally how it’s used in modern society. It’s a fascinating display, but I'm not sure if it's permanent or temporary.
Downstairs in the final room is an exhibit on birds. It seems out of place at a cultural museum. I guess it is here to mark the annual migration of various species from the northern climes.
All of the signage on the exhibits is in both English and Spanish with the exception of the peyote gallery. That is Spanish only. Cameras are not allowed inside, and they will hold them in a locker at the reception. When I visited wearing a face mask was mandatory.
