I have studied a lot of the history of the 20th century in Europe and visited many places connected with key events, but no history is told as well as those places where everything has been left as it was - just as it is in Oradour. There are so many things to see here that show what the village was like in 1944 - the Singer sowing machines in the houses; the weighing scales in the baker's shop, the rusting cars, the schools, the cafes, the tram lines - you can see the people living their lives there up to the moment that the atrocity happened.
In the Visitor Centre, we bought a pamphlet called "The Tragedy Hour by Hour" by Robert Hebras - one of the few survivors of the massacre and we used it as a guide during our visit. It told the story of what happened and how it happened in sufficient detail to understand how events unfolded that day. When we were leaving, we passed two walls which carry photographs of many of those whose lives were cut short that day. No human being could look at the people in those photos and not feel emotional and ask how could such things happen - and feel a determination that they should never happen again.
Anyone who visits Oradour and is not appalled at what humans can do to each other has not learned from the experience.

At the end of June 1944 the Germans ransacked and burnt this village and nearly all its inhabitants. To see the remains as they still stand and see the burnt out cars and domestic articles in very moving. It is certainly worth a detour if you are in the area. Entry is free.

Everyone should visit this village to understand the evil that was responsible for the tragedy. You can’t fail to be moved when you walk through the streets and realise that it was just a normal village until the massacre. The museum gives a good background to the events leading up to the day. Entry to the village is free, the museum is only a few euros each. Not just a must-see if you’re in the area but well worth travelling to.

Overwhelming, heart breaking, unbelievable and breath taking all in one! This is one place in France everyone should visit once. Monumental decision to keep this village as it was left after being devastated totally by the S.S. Perfectly presented and it's a must to pay for the cheap entry fee to the Centre's display explaining the lead up to 10/6/1944. Cannot say enough about how it's displayed, brilliant and just about all the stories have English text beside them now. We suggest getting there early as gets very busy later in day and afternoon.

We visited the Memorial Centre at Oradour first which gave the background story to the sad and tragic events of Oradour-sur-Glane. This then led us to the village itself which was an extremely memorable and poignant visit. Everyone was very respectful. The village should be visited by everyone who holidays in this area.

Many artefacts recovered from the ruins shortly after the massacre are on permanent display.
Glasses, kids toys, clocks et cetera
It helps to understand or visualise how the villagers lived, to make it more concrete.

Especially the toys from the toddlers touched me deeply.

The history of this village is stark and still shocking so many years later. On 10 June 1944, Haute-Vienne was in Nazi-occupied France. A German Waffen-SS company massacred 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, and set the buildings on fire. The village has been preserved just as they left it. The experience of walking along the streets with the remains of the buildings and entering the church where the children and women were slaughtered is chilling. The exhibition in the museum portrays the faces of the people who were killed and makes links to other places in the world where similar atrocities have occurred.

Visited at opening and pleased we did as it soon became busy.... And if you want to read the information boards then it's so much easier when it's quieter. We did pay for the audio guides and for a couple of euros it was worth it. We did find that there was almost too much information, and very in depth for our ten year old, even though he has a keen interest in history. He did listen through nearly all the audio guide and it really is quite long. Obviously the history behind the museum is incredibly sad and to walk around the ruins of the village is such a sad reminder of what we humans can do to each other. Well worth a visit and take the time to read or listen to the history and the events leading up to the atrocities.
