Le Morne Brabant is home to UNESCO's World Heritage site dedicated to the memory of the fight for freedom of the slaves in Mauritius...indeed in the world. The monument at the foot of the mountain comprises sculptures in stone from artists representing countries that have supplied slaves to Mauritius grouped around a centrepiece scultured by a Mauritian artist. A very peaceful place today but one cannot but feel an eerie force and s shiver will run down your spine when you cast your eyes aloft towards the top of the mountain from where the last slaves faced westwards towards Africa and jumped to their death to escape capture...not knowing that slavery had been abolished.

Powerful monument reminding us of the tragic history that many countries would just rather forget. This moving monument, sculptures by various nations, in the shade of Le Morne Brabant, is opposite the public beach in Le Morne and well worth a visit of contemplation.

The annual anniversary of the abolition in Mauritius (1 Feb 1835) is almost here again - Freedom was indeed gained, but it was the slave owners who were looked after financially due to the loss of their work force, the freed slaves were not compensated at all. And the story of the mountain is heartbreaking.

So can the world now celebrate the end of slavery? Sadly, forms have only changed and modern slavery is very much alive all over the Western world. In the UK last year, 39 Vietnamese nationals suffocated to death inside a lorry, were the men destined to work on cannabis farms, women in the London nail bars or in prostitution? Do people still remember the Chinese cockle pickers who drowned in Morecambe Bay? We have still not learned.

Monument appeared to get only a few western visitors despite clear signage and the proximity of the beach, please stop by on your next visit and spare a thought to this difficult subject.

I appreciated our visit to the International Slave Route Monument, which is a moving tribute to enslaved individuals around the world. It consists of a number of impressive sculptures from countries around the world from where people had been enslaved. Stories about each sculpture are provided. However, it would have been great to have more history and interpretation of the art. Not necessarily worth a special visit but do stop by if you are in Le Morne Brabant.

To enjoy the beautiful surroundings and then learn of the horrific plight of the slaves was very thought provoking. It is good that people can be educated in the horror of slavery especially as in many countries it still continues today I’m sure .

Free entry to this monument for the slaves and their sad stories to freedom.
Beautiful large engravings on rocks and a story with each rock explaining the reason for the picture.

It's a nice little garden full of sculptures and small monuments as remembrance of the slavery day and celebrating the liberation and freedom. Right opposite the public beach of la morne.
Dont specifically drive there to see it, it takes 10-15 mins to check it all, but if you're in the area definitely stop by.
It's free and interesting.

Sculptures were stunning. Definitely worth a walk down to see. We went when they were cutting the grass which wasn’t the most peaceful but did show it was well maintained.

We came across this whilst on visit to the amazing Le Morne beach. It is a stark contrast that something is beautiful as that is close to this horrible reminder of man’s inhumanity to man. In a way, this helps to bring it home.

The memorial is made up of several statues carved into huge lumps of rock and it is amazing. Each statue has its own particular tribute to the people who suffered and comes at the subject from some very different angles.

True, it isn’t a huge site as somebody pointed out in another review but I don’t think that is the point. It makes you think about how things were and how they should never be again
