A little old and run down two-room museum but housing some interesting artifacts, photos, news articles, and other memorabilia from Somaliland's history. We learned a lot about the country including Somaliland's role in the Moon Landing!

I spent about 45 minutes looking at the displays here. The museum is small, but tries hard to explain the history.

There are good photos from the war fir independence from the British and the war waged by Somalia against Somaliland, and the aerial bombing that razed Hargeisa by SA and Rhodesian pilots.

Also some old passports, bank notes, medals, etc. snd a few tribal artifacts.

There is also a picture display with text about the stunning prehistoric rock art at Las Gheel.

Well worth a visit.

I visited here with my son and father from the Uk. We have a lovely couple of hours walking around the two rooms with Mr Hussein the founder and manager, and then chatting away under the trees in English over a drink in the courtyard afterwards. It is in 2 large rooms and is really just getting started. Mr Hussein was full of stories about Somaliland, it’s foundations and the objects he has personally collected. It was a lovely stop and I don’t suppose there are many visitors each day. I really hope he continues to bring even more of Somaliland’s culture and history to life here.

The museum consists of two rooms. One shows the Somali pastoral way of life, the other one the history and politics of Somaliland. The museum is quite small and does not show a lot of exhibits. However for 3$ one gets a nice 30 minute introduction into the country.

Highly recommended. A small, but important, museum in two parts - rural cultural history and political history. Entry is $2/person. Although hardly visited, in my opinion this is a must see to give an overview of both rural Somaliland life and the long struggle for independence from Somali control. Privately established by Saeed Shukri in 2017 to promote and protect the country's history. Saeed escorted us, happily explaining the various items in the cultural building - from prehistoric stone tools to oxen ploughs and camel bells. We then moved to the political history building which starts with the end of colonisation, but focuses on the SNM's (Somaliland National Movement) fight for independence from Somalia and the devastating impact on Hargeysa and its residents. Part-way through he introduced one of his friends, Dr Adene. Both fought for independence for over 10 years. It is rare and an honour to meet people who were at the forefront of this movement  Dr Adene was the Medical Director of Hargeysa Hospital when captured by Somali forces in the early 1980s. Initially sentenced to death, later reduced to life sentence, he spent 8 years in solitary confinement, eventually released through the efforts of Amnesty International. Adene and Saeed knew everyone whose picture hangs on the wall, and shared their, mostly painful, stories.

Without Said, our experience would definitely have been less meaningful, so I advise you to contact the museum in advance to see if there is any chance that he can take you round. If not, read up on the SNM and walk yourself through a unique piece of fairly recent history. It's not a easy visit... (Less visually graphic than the Red Terror Martyr's Museum in Addis Ababa, but with similar impact.)

Check opening times too, as it's not open every day.

saryan museum is nice with single efforts from the owner, not too many items inside though for someone expecting something similar to other museums around the world. timing coukd be changed to be from 9-5. it is a good start for a bigger museum. I did not like descriminating locals and foreigners when it comes to entrance fee. it should be same for all.

The museum has two sections: One deals with the regional history and shows many old photos. But there is almost nothing from the time 1960 to 1989 when the region was part of Mogadishu controlled Somalia. The other section shows parts of rural or nomadic live with a tent or some easy farming tools. Well worth a visit to learn and understand the region, why they want a self-goventment there. Unfortunately no photos allowed there.

I was the only person there, so the owner showed me around and explained things for me. It cost $3 to get in. Should take 30 minutes to see it all. I'm glad I stopped in. I learned a lot.
