It was definitely quite a bit smaller than expected, but there were a few interesting exhibits, and the staff were very nice and welcoming.

Modern Art for no other reason

Not expensive but small... Nice way to kill a couple of hours. Nothing really special but the exhibits do change. Check first before going.

For $10 per person, you can enjoy a great verify of EMPTY rooms.

We want our money back for the tickets, subway ride, and time wasted coming here.

We came here all the way from Manhattan, spent 30 minutes one way on a subway, and when we entered the museum, it was empty... Like, there is so much space. If this building were used as a shelter for homeless people, it would be better to use the square footage it occupies.

Raw, unexpected delight
Mar 2021
This is MoMA’s more experimental space, and I like it a lot! It’s in a cool, old school building, with great exposed brick and wooden floors. Beautiful large windows with tons of light. Feels less snobby or pretentious than many other NYC museums. The art is also edgier, maybe even more controversial. More raw. And I like that.

My favorite experience here was an expansive exhibit focusing on the art of incarcerated prisoners. The work was beautiful, moving. Sometimes heart-wrenching. I wish I had been able to spend more time with each piece, to truly digest the gravity and the pain, but the spaces are small, and only so many people are allowed to be in one room at a time due to COVID restrictions.

There was also a neat, colorful, and cheeky Niki de Saint Phalle sculpture exhibit. It tied in with some of her more serious social justice work.

There is a cafe that offers counter service and has a big courtyard for outdoor dining. I didn’t try it, but it would have topped off a great experience.

I almost passed up this museum, but I ended up enjoying it very much, probably even more than the main MoMA campus. I’ll keep an eye out for future events.

Small, good and unexpected

An old public school converted into a showcase for Modern art. I understand is not the amazing Manhattan MoMa, but if we are prepared and understanding go contemporary act, it's a good experience. The hammocks in the front are very nice, I don't know if they are a temporary installation. Exploring will be good if you have an open mind.

Disappointing
Jan 2020
Located on Long Island it is outside of what you might consider to be NYC (Manhattan) and is nothing like the glamorous and sexy MOMA of 53rd Street. This is an old abandoned public school and appears very rough around the edges - perhaps MOMA has plans for a huge makeover sometime in the future - it certainly needs it! Unfortunately (for me) the exhibition displayed across all 3 floors of the building was focused on the Gulf War and was not the kind of art I enjoy - so it’s probably wise to check what’s on before making the effort to get here. I wanted to see the building as I had not seen MOMA PS1 before. Shame it’s not like MOMA in Manhattan or the new Whitney museum - this definitely the poor relation

A wonderful museum off the beaten path
Des 2019
I read the other reviews before going and I can only concur with those in that the MoMa PS1 is an excellent venue. Last weekend they had an exhibition about the Gulf Wars which was very interesting, you should check what is on before you go as if I would not have enjoyed this exhibition with young children. The museum has many rooms and nooks to exhibit in which makes it all the more interesting to explore...I will be back!

No permanent exhibits, so be sure you like what’s on

We stopped by when a Gulf Wars exhibition was on and we found it outstanding! Being contemporary art, there was certainly an anti-establishment slant. The while huge museum (used to be a high school) was dedicated to different expressions in all media. Quite an experience! To be recommended!

Unique space for contemporary art
Nov 2019
This is one of the only museums in NYC where the artists own the art and all exhibits are contemporary. The exhibits change periodically, so you should research before coming here what will be on display. Some have very strong content and not advisable for children or those who may find the topic to be a trigger. That being said, I visit this museum frequently and I usually find memorable pieces that are now influencing my way of expression.

Wonderful art museum

We were in NYC for the weekend only and MoMA was only a block away from our hotel. We decided on the spur of the moment to visit. The line was long so as we stood there we attempted to buy tickets online through their site. The website kept kicking us out and wouldn’t allow us to purchase our tickets. Others were having the same problem. I suggest they look into this issue. The museum was beautifully redone recently. The art was fun and inspiring and we enjoyed our visit after getting through the line. Buy your tickets before going to avoid the long wait.
