We stayed overnight with Antonio and his family at Antonio's Guesthouse in Hato Builica where we were well looked after and had a wonderful experience of spending a night with the locals.
Up at 2:30am, get ready and into the vehicle for the drive to the start point of the walk to the summit. The road up to the start point can only be negotiated by a 4WD with an experienced driver. Started walking at 3:30am and got to the summit just before 6:00am well in advance of the sunrise. If you are planning to walk in the dark make sure you have a torch. The walk is steep in parts but manageable with a reasonable level of fitness. Even if not overly fit you can still make it to the top, you will just need to allow more time and take it more slowly and consider making the trip in daylight. At the summit it was bitterly cold, colder than I expected but we huddled out of the wind until the sun started to make an appearance. Standing next to the statue of Nain Feto Remelau (Our Lady of Ramelau) the view was AMAZING. The walk back down was full of more amazing scenery. The climb to the top of Ramelau is considered a pilgrimage for Timorese people with a prayer in front of Nain Feto Ramelau carrying great weight.
Take some warm clothes to put on once you reach the summit and some snacks and water for the trip. I have travelled to Timor Leste a total of 6 times for a total of more than 8 months in the country and this is one of my most memorable and enjoyable experiences yet!

The walk for the sunrise was well worth the 330am wakeup. We had our own vehicle but went with a guide as the road up to the starting point is quite rough and hard to follow at night time. Ask for Antonio he is friendly and charged us $25. A bit dear perhaps but not too bad.
From the gateway to the top took us 3hours as some parts are a little steep, but it is mostly because of the darkness. We had a full moon which made for a nice climb. Also, it was quite quite cold! Bring a jacket, scarf, beanie and even thermals, just for this part of the trip.
If you were walking the whole way, from the village, you probably don't need a guide as you can easily follow the road all the way to the start, but it may add about 45mins.
The view from the top, is spectacular and worth about 1hour. If you come prepared with b'fast and maybe a thermos of coffee you will be grateful, we wished we had!

We took a 5-hour drive from Dili (1h of good road, 4h of bad to very bad – you will need a 4WD beast). Stayed at the Ovalido Gardens, in front of the church ($35/room, including breakfast - good infrastructure, there was supposed to be hot water but we did not have, dinner for $5/pax and guide for $10/pax). Would recommend to bring an extra blanket. Ph: +670 77241234/77432000 (Maun Duarte – speaks a bit of English)
We decided to go for the sunrise, and left the hotel at 3:30am with the guide by car, who took us to the very entry door of Ramelau (you may want to reconsider doing the last chunk, since it does not look much like a road…). I cannot explain the amazing night sky you are able to see if clear of clouds – it would have been worth it only for that. Started the walk up at 4:15am and managed to do it 2h to see the sunrise – also very worth it, and if clear sky you can pretty much see the whole country! The path is well defined and you would probably not get lost but always better to get a guide, it is a steep one so you will do some nice cardio! It’s cold but you get pretty warm -especially because we had quite a good pace and we did not stop much nor for long. It was tough especially if you are not very fit, but manageable. Bring a few layers and get a good flashlight.
On top was freezing and very windy, so if you have gloves, hat, scarf and a good jacket take them with you. You won’t regret it! We stayed on the top for like an hour and started our way down. The good part here is you actually get to see your surroundings which are pretty cool! Did a short pit-stop to eat and drink - bring some extra food and water for the guide. Took us, (with the breakfast stop and taking pictures) around another 2 hours – knees destroyed and pretty hot but beautiful views.
Worth doing it!

I chose to drive myself, though sighs are scarce roads are bad..it was much cheaper then a tourist group...stayed in a $15 homestay a local house which was wonderful. The climb up the mountain was worth the views all the way up. I chose not to go at 3am as for a sacrifice of a sunrise view I got to see many wonderful views in daylight and not climbing at dark..really a sunrise is a sunrise . Don't really need a guide but handy to ask questions. It is cold on top but walking you warm up

If you want to enjoy the full moon on the cheap, then you must be prepared, but if you have your own vehicle it is better, but if you are with a rental car you will hire a 4WD car at a price between $ 120-150 / day, you can get in dili Esilva and Rentlo. time climbing to see the full moon is at 5 five in the afternoon you will reach the peak at about 9 pm. and you will enjoy the full moon with a thick cloud shaped field, you'll enjoy it until satisfied and remember you have to see your face in the mirror, and one more thing if you want to get the good photographs with a full moon, you have to set up a professional camera and lighting sufficient for a good picture.
Good Luck and Enjoy our Ramelau in The Midnight, the possibility of the full moon in June

Not being particularly fit, it was tough, but well worth the effort. I can appreciate the other reviews about climbing later in the morning, but the sunrise was amazing coming through the clouds that are below you. I am glad I did the sunrise trek. A few tips:
* Get your snacks, alcohol and water supplies well before you hit the village where you stay. (We took our's from Dili).
* Make some sandwiches, boiled eggs etc to eat on the way down, and take enough for your guide. There's a nice open air church near the top to eat it at.
* Definitely use a guide if you trek in the dark, and we got one from our accommodation. Even if you don't think you need a guide for a day trek, they need the job so hire one anyway.
* .It is cold like Mt Everest at the top and hot like a sauna on the way down. I had 7 layers of clothing and I wish I had 10.
* A good strong torch and loads of water.

Everyone insists that you must hike Ramelau in the middle of the night and be there for sunrise. You miss so much and it was freezing at the top for those of us who were faster hikers. I would prefer to leave the guest house at 6 AM with some coffee and small sustenance in me, pack a lovely lunch, enjoy the hike up, the view from above and not freeze my butt off!

As everyone says it will take a bit if effort to get here, but things that are worth it often do. The road from Dili covers all the scales - some parts good to some parts diabolical. The last 18kms are the worst for sure. You can stop at the Dare memorial and Maubisse on the way in. Make sure you take with you any snacks you may want - there is one shop in the village that sells water and biscuits but not much else.
We set off at 3.30am and were up the top before sunrise - which was beautiful. There were some clouds but they actually added to the overall effect . It is pretty cold at the top - we had layers which we needed, take a hat and gloves if you have them plus your torch. The guesthouse is basic - again you will need a torch as the electricity doesn't come on until 6pm and was not on when we got up at 3am. Dinner and breakfast are basic. You will need to bring something to eat of you are doing the sunrise climb as you won't get anything before you head out.
The climb itself is sometimes difficult in the dark. It is not an easy stroll, but doable. If you need to stop and take a breath you can and still get up to the top before sunrise. There is something going on with the guides and their prices - both us and the other group that were climbing were told the price had gone upto $25. Not sure if this is correct or when this all changed.
Very worthwhile to do, ere are a couple of markets on the way home as well. A great 2 day trip.

Took the climb at 5am as previous comment and drove are car to the gate 15 min above the village. Sunrise halfway up and a beautiful view up there. The path is simple with some stairways and very easy climbing even though 2900 m is a tough altitude for an office rat. Took us three hours to the top and back.
There are a couple of guest houses in Haut Baulico, the Posada is the most known one. We stayed with Antonio in the beginning of the village - he is a young guy with a simple local house run by him and his sister, 15 USD/person including simple food (+670 77471902). One more guest house was close to Forca (the former military baracks). Guides are everywhere, but not really needed (even if we had one).

We rented a car ($100 per day excluding the fuel and insurance) at rentlo just next to our hotel which is Timor Lodge. Motorbike is impossible. We passed by Maubisse and took some photos. From Maubisse, Mt. Ramelau can be seen depending on the weather. The road from Dili to Maubisse to Hati Builico is horrible, a lot of potholes. Zigzag everywhere. I got dizzy and was puking, but that is part of the adventure. We stayed in Pousada $10 US/person. That is the only one guest house that is open in Hati Builico. Dinner was $3/person and breakfast was $2/person. The next morning, the weather was bad so I was not able to climb Mt. Ramelau. My boyfriend climb the mountain with some new friends Tim from Australia and Kevin from Switzerland. They did it in 4hrs up and down. They didnt see anything because of bad weather. Bad timing for all of us.

I am trying to make a trip this weekend--I have a really short stay, arriving at noon on Saturday and leaving at noon on Monday. I want to climb Ramelau and see a bit of Dili. I figure that I could get in by 6 pm the evening to Hata Builico (leaving directly from the airport), climb at 3 am, and get down at 8 am to return to Dili by early afternoon...and then see a bit of Dili then or the next morning. I do not wish to drive myself and Timor Adventures unwilling to do this somewhat treacherous/ambitious trip. Anyone here have any other suggestions?

Hi, I will be travelling solo to Timor Leste in June, and wondered if I could get some advice on travelling to Mt Ramelau by 4wd hire. This will be my first time travelling solo, but I am very keen to do as much on my own as I can. In your opinion what is the road like getting up there. I currently drive a ford explorer 4wd and have had some basic experience with driving 4wd but I have no idea what I am up against going to Mt Ramelau. I can do rough and bumpy but I am worried about falling off a cliff, is this possible or is it ok so long as I go slow. I also have limited time so there is a chance I will end up driving in the dark. Or do you think it is more sensible to have a driver, it just means I wont be doing it 'on my own' but I may have to just sacrifice that for the sake of seeing the sunrise. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks Melody.

Thanks Chris, I had a conversation with a lady last week who had just got back and she said the complete opposite, so I guess I will have to find out for myself. I have a Timorese translator who wants to come along for the ride so I wont be completely on my own, will just have to go slow and steady. Thanks so much for your reply.
