This is a very complete history of this area of Montana. The exhibits are very well done. It was all fascinating to us city people. We spent hours in this museum which contains many, many different displays relating to the history and the lives of the people who lived in this area. There is even a small pioneer town behind the museum which has very complete recreations of the depicted time in the individual buildings. Dont't miss this museum if you are in Fort Benton. In fact, don't miss Fort Benton.

This was well worth a visit during our stay in Fort Benton. With a combination ticket you get admission to the museum, the fort and the agricultural museum. Worth doing. In the museum we picked up tidbits about Fort Benton and learned a lot about this part of Montana and the west.

We had fun to explore the past in Fort Benton. They covered from 1932 to 1914.
They used railroads and someone wrote: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."
Depression storms were very dangerous. They called it rollers.
In the farms they used Arsenic and DDT. They used
They had weather stations. Very important.
We saw how they dressed, what they did. What was fun!
They were row cropping.
They had a small village to help the tourists how they lived in the houses and what was inside.
We saw all kinds of homes. We saw wooden homes. They used wagons. We entered in homes to see how they lived.
There was a school and a church.
We saw a bank, a prison, a city hall, alcohol and medicine.
We learned a lot here. It was quite different in the past.
Worthwhile to see!

This place has got to be one to go to if you are up this way. It has more things interesting than the Smithsonian in DC. Two or three trips may be needed just to read and view everything because it is hard to take in all of the history there. The place only had two other people walking through during our time and that is a disgrace. What a marvelous town! Oh I forgot to mention the charge for the Ft Benton tour gets you in to this place and the Agricultural one as well. What a bargain

This museum is wonderful. There is so much history and the exhibits are done really well. The people that work there are full of interesting facts and most helpful. It was an afternoon well spent.

Went to Fort Benton got a weekend bike ride. What a great museum lots to look at and lots of history. Would recommend it to everyone.

This is my favorite museum in Montana. All the docents have been more than helpful. The museum scans may years of history up to about 1970, if I remember correctly. I highly recommend this to kids and adults.

So much to see and read about, plan on a couple hours at least! Really nicely laid out, you will really miss out if you don’t stop in! Plenty of parking, right in town.

Whether you are a "born and bread" Montanan, or just a visitor passing through historic Ft. Benton, Montana; The Museum of the Northern Great Plains is a MUST SEE attraction. I recently took a group of Jr. High Montana History students here as part of their Montana History Trip, and we all came away absolutely mesmerized and amazed with everything we got to see in 2 hours. They graciously opened the museum for my students even though it was not quite tourist season, which is something they regularly do for school groups. I still cannot get over how much there is to see in the 3 buildings we went through with our tour guide. Some of the highlights were the Smithsonian Buffalo, the collection of threshing machines, and the 5 millionth International tractor. Plus, the great homesteader town that has been created was truly a memorable experience for the students. A huge thank you to everyone at the museum for making the student's experience truly amazing.
