Rock on Stephen Haynes!
Sep 2021 • Teman
We four seniors have been to MDI for several years and were looking for a new adventure. This was it! Stephen Haynes is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable speaker. We enjoyed every minute of our time at the museum. We learned so much about granite and the geology of the area that the rest of our trip was rock centered. Even short walks became more interesting. I applaude a man so devoted to his calling.

Inside this large metal building is a terrific museum experience
Agt 2021
Inside this conventional metal building is a treasure of a museum. Our guide was the director with a lifetime of experience in making monuments and other objects from blocks of granite. His hands-on experience compliments his superb knowledge of the history of Maine's granite quarries and processing. He brings this history alive, demonstrating the tools and processes to turn granite into useful building materials and monuments.

If you're spending a day or more near Southwest Harbor, treat yourself with a visit and tour of this museum.

Great hidden gem
Agt 2021 • Keluarga
Amazing little gem! You get your own personalized tour, if there is no one around. Great collection and explanations! He really got our kids interested. It’s rare to find someone, who clearly loves as much about what he does! Worth a visit.

Wonderful Historical tour
Nov 2019
Wonderful visit and a lot of history to learn. Being an amateur "rock hound" and the daughter of a man who used to make the chisels used in quarrying, it was a great learning experience. The man that took us through was knowledgeable, fun, and just full of the little information that a person needs to make this an up-close and personal tour. Highly recommend a visit.

Interesting out of the way museum
Sep 2019
For those of you who wonder how all the Maine granite became beautiful buildings around our country, this place is for you. For example, the Philadelphia Mint built in 1898 is made from Maine Granite. Our tour guide was truly knowledgeable and committed.

Rainy Day museum visit.
Agt 2019 • Teman
We had a rainy day on Mt Desert Island and were searching for an interesting activity. The museum was great, and as others have said, Steve Haynes, president and proprietor is very knowledgeable and entertaining. There are so many historic photos, maps, and documents mounted on the walls, and fascinating antique tools on work stands. Steve seems to just love sharing his knowledge and stories about the Maine granite industry- and Maine’s history generally. It’s well worth a visit, even if it’s not a rainy day!

Great place
Agt 2019
This museum is quite homegrown, and not fancy, the very quality that makes this museum a great choice. It's hands-on in the sense that you can pick up rocks and tools and other items used in the industry. The proprietor/director, Steve, really has a passion and knowledge for granite. If you're interested in increasing your understanding of the nature of Acadia/Mount Desert Island, this provides a good foundation (literally)! The photos provide impressive evidence of where Maine granite has been used in building projects throughout the U.S. Whether you want to talk geology in-depth, learn how granite was quarried, or learn about the granite people and how it shaped parts of Maine, Steve is your man! He has a great hands-on program for school-children which left me thinking 'why do kids get to have all the fun?'
If you have only a casual interest, plan on 30 minutes. If you have a curious nature about many things, plan to spend a good hour or more here! Please leave a generous donation so that Steve can continue to build this amazing place.

What a treat!
Jul 2019 • Pasangan
Steve is amazingly knowledgeable and passionate about the granite industry having started an apprenticeship with industry masters at the tender age of 11. This tour has it all - from the in-depth early history through the many improvements in procedures/tools over the years. It ends with handling a beautiful array of specimens. Well worth the time!

This was a great place to visit. The gentleman who runs the museum was very knowledgeable and informative. He seems to be single handily attempting to preserve the history of the Maine granite industry. It was well worth the stop.
