If you decide to hike up to and back down on a round trip of the Creux du Van, keep in mind that it’ll cost you about 22,000 steps and approx. 700 vertical meters. The path is very steep and rocky on both parts and not recommended if it has rained recently as it can be slippery.
The scenery at the top is of course spectacular with a wide open plateau, with plenty of photos opportunities. A farmer has a little snack stop (not open when we went on a Friday) on the way up, there is a restaurant at the summit and one down at the east side.

The Creux du Van is definitely one of the most famous geological phenomena of Switzerland and it also gets visited a lot. It is possible to drive up by car to the parking and the restaurant at 'La Ferme de Soliat', from where it is only a short walk to the edge of the cirque, an amphitheatre-like rock formation, about 1200m long and with 160m high cliffs.
Naturally it is a much more exciting experience to include a visit here in a round walk, best out of Noiraigue (733m asl), where there is a railway station. My choice had been to go up from here first to the buvette of Les Oeuillons (1014m) and then all the way up to the edge of the canyon by using the 'Sentier des 14 Contours', the path with the 14 bends, which goes mostly through a forested area.
On top I walked along the cliffs, past some old dry stone walls, typical for the Jura, to the viewpoint of Le Soliat (1463m), the highest point here around, where there is a panorama map. For my way down I used the 'Sentier du Single' to the 'Fontaine Froide' and the place, where in 1757 the last bear had been killed. At the Ferme Robert (972m asl) is a restaurant, an exhibition hall and several information boards. From here I then walked back to the starting point at Noiraigue.

It can be very windy even in summer, so I suggest that you dress appropriately. There are plenty of hiking trails around with beautiful scenery. One can also come all the way with a car, a free parking is provided.

Well worth the trip out here - we did the circuit hike. First half pretty steep up and a bit muddy. Most descriptions didn’t mention but there are quite a few places to have a meal on the way including the farm at the top, as well as to refill water. Also great scenic picnic spots so worth coming for the day.

The Creux du Van is an extraordinary natural rock amphitheatre situated in the canton of Neuchâtel. You can get there by car, and park at the Soliat Restaurant 5 minutes walk from the edge. But the best plan is to walk up from the valley or park your car halfway up. On fine weekends the place is seething with tourists, but this doesn't prevent you from enjoying the fabulous view from the top.

I am not a geologist I would really like to know more about how this place came about. An amazing view, an incredible walk along the rim. The clouds can come down quickly but we were lucky and although it was cloudy we got great views. Well worth a visit

We parked at the free parking lot of Noiraigue train station (they allow you to park for 10 hours maximum). Although if you keep going towards the trail, you can also park where it starts to go up.
It took us about 1 hour and a half to walk up to the view point at the top and 40 minutes to get down. (We are about 20 and in shape )
We ended up not going around the creux because we were in a cloud and couldn’t see anything... (make sure the weather is clear other you’ll be pretty disappointed ..).
But at the top we saw a family of alpine ipex. We came pretty close to them and that was great!
On the way there is also a farm with a few different animals like goats and rabbits.
Just before the farm you’ll find a fountain where you can refill your bottles with fresh mountain water!

It was "smaller" than expected. The view was beautiful. Unfortunately, the sunset was not really touching the cliffs when we were there (beginning of August).
You can either picknick somewhere or go to the restaurant. We ran into 3 beautiful, wild capricorns when hiking down, they were not scared and also not interested:-) It was great!

We took the train to Noiraigue, as many others do, and began and ended our circular hike there. It was mid-week, so perhaps less people than at the weekend, at least on the hike. The route (National Route 5) is very well waymarked and we chose to go up via Les Oeillons and the "14 Corners". This means that the first time we could appreciate the Creux was when we suddenly emerged from the steep cliff onto the ridge. A magical moment.
The walk along the ridge for the next kilometre or so, continues to delight with different vistas, beautiful wild flowers and a head for heights is needed if you want to pose at or near the edge.
Before reaching Grand Vy, there is a waymarker pointing downwards to Ferme Robert. Although this is undoubtedly the shortest route down, it is also very steep, so if you have dodgy knees or not the best footwear , it may be better to carry on the ridge to Pre au Favre and take the route down from there.
Take a welcome break at Ferme Robert, homemade lemonade, before making the final descent back to Noiraigue. With 700m of ascent/descent you will definitely feel like you earned a beer on your return home!

Driving from Neuchatel to Creux du Vin took us through the forest all the way up to the mountain top. By the time in late afternoon it was rainy and misty. There are restaurants close to Creux du Van and we decided to have early dinner (Fondue) and by the time we were finished it had cleared a bit. The terrain to walk to the edge is a bit rough and there are no barriers at the edge of the cliff which makes it somewhat scary and unsafe never the less amazing!

Bonjour,
Merci d'avance !

Hi,
I'm visiting Neuchatel on 6 Nov for 5 days free & easy, where would you recommended to visit?

HI,
If the weather permits:
Try to visit "Creux du Van" : a startling rocky mountain. It's most practical to have a (rental) car to get there. There's a train going to Travers, but from there it's still a long hike. Maybe there's local transport like bus or taxi, but I don't know that.
There's a very nice funicular going from Neuchatel to Chaumont. It's roughly a 15 ride (one way) and it gives you great views over lake Neuchatel. If you're staying in one of the local hotels you typically get a local transport card (free of charge) which you can also you for this ride.
There's a natural asphalt mine in Val de Travers. Unique in Europe! Send my warm regards to Thomas, a good friend.
Enjoy this beautiful region in Switzerland!

Hi, I am planning to go on Sunday. How long does it take to get to the top? I see you go to Neuchatel and take the train to Noiraigue. Is it a very steep hike(not so fit a person)? Thank you.

It is not the most convenient way to travel by public transport as it will and can take you long - easiest is to drive up and then the walk to to top takes about 30 minutes - not at all steep.

Hallo Gerini2014!

Yes That is right ! You stop with the train at Noiraigue and after you have a trip to the creux de vent. But if you have small children it is difficult for them because the path is rising. It is better to have a car and from the village of Couvet you rise with your car and you take the direction of le Soliat. You CAN stop on the first parking and you need to walk easily 45 minutes. There is a second parking just behind the restaurant of Soliat. After this one you need 10 minutes for the Creux du Vent
Have a good trip
