A must go
Jan 2021
First of all this place's entrance is FREE and I was impressed with the amount of information about The Cuban history and how they migrated to the USA. It was such an emotional time to be here.

Must See!
Jul 2020 • Teman
A Cuban-American icon, The San Carlos Institute located at 516 Duval Street in the heart of Key West is MUST SEE and is awesome for history! Now a FREE museum (they accept donations and I always donate), it’s a great find and arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in Key West. Cuba has a lot of tied history with the USA, especially in Key West. Here you will see artifacts, art, documents, and other historical Cuban and Cuban American pieces. Devote about 30 mins to an hour and you won’t regret it.

There isn't a while lot to see here but architecturally, it's worth a shiet stop. The 18ft door is awesome, the tiles are all from Sevilla, that and the marble stairs are worth a look.

Fascinating History on Duval
Sep 2019 • Sendiri
I had walked past this building many times during my stay in Key West but on my second to last day, I finally went in. The gentleman running the place told me about the significance of the building and how it was a refuge for the Cuban people of KW for a large period of time in the 1800s. The interior of the building is exquisite and it served as a school and community center. When it was severely damaged in the early 1900s, the Cuban government paid for and restored it to its current state. Worth some time and it is free.

Beautiful exhibit space in an historic building.

We saw an event during the Songwriter's Festival, but the regular exposition at this time was a stamp collection of Cuban postage and artifacts. Building may be closed for special events.

Rich in History

Great historic building, well preserved and good restored, rich in documents about Key west and Cuba. I definitely recommend to visit this magnificent place, the volunteers (who greeting the visitors) had a good knowledge about the building and key west, and admission is free, this no profit organization has survived thank to the donations. I bought a Book “Cuba y el Cayo Hueso de ayer” ,Alejandro F.Pascual. so interesting, did you know Juan Pablo Salas sold Key West to John W. Simonton for only $2,000 dollars?.. I place you should visit.

A great restoration and wonderful exhibits be sure to stop and see this great take on history. We live near Tampa and the Cuban connection of Key West and our home are very interesting. There was a great photographic exhibit of the Cuban cemetery tombs upstairs as well.
