Definitely worth the trip

My husband and I were on our way to catch the Lewes Ferry and decided to stop and check out the exhibit. My husband is from Spain so we thought that it would be interesting to see and it really was. It was hidden on the school's campus, but once we found it the guide, her assistant, and the gift shop helper were great. The artifacts were exhibited so that some could be touched. Silver bars, cannons, gold, jewelry, and other relics are all there to be enjoyed. Definitely found it interesting!

What a Hidden Gem!

We were intrigued by the Smithsonian offer of free tickets.Nestled in the library of the college, a different world engaged us! There was easy access and the way was clearly marked. We were greeted promptly by the curator, Susan-- what a great person, as she was enthusiastic, and offered a wealth of information about the exhibit! She had arranged the visit, to include a video, and hand's on activities, There was absolutely no time to mentally drift off, as it was planned that the next exhibit would be more exciting.

This is a small museum that is filled with treasures from the Spanish Galleon, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank. There are silver bars and coins; gold coins, bar and jewelry; cannons, video, tank replicating the sea, etc. The director gave us a tour and made it so very interesting. This has to be one of the best "small museums" in our nation. Put it on your list!

Gold and Silver found in a Spanish Wreck on Display
Mei 2015 • Pasangan
Here I thought by "treasures" they meant sea shells and other sorts of natural items found in the ocean (Georgetown is on the road to Rehoboth Beach after all). WRONG! This fascinating exhibit in the library building of the Delaware Technical Community College is all about buried treasure as desired by pirates! How did these end up in Georgetown, Delaware when the treasures came from a Spanish wreck off the Florida coast? It's all about local investors buying into a hunt for the ship "Atocha" that took years of research on the part of Mel Fisher. They have a 15 minute documentary film showing how the wreck was discovered. In the museum we see several canons retrieved from the wreck. There are maps, dioramas, and descriptions of how the gold and silver was mined and then stamped into official Spanish coins. Inside what looks like a bank vault are actual gold and silver coins and jewels found on the ocean bottom. The goodies on display are claimed to be worth over 4 million dollars. The story that goes with the treasure is fascinating and extremely worth the visit. It is a small museum with a little entrance fee along with a little gift shop. The exhibits are professional and allow some artifacts to be touched (but no photography please).
