Feed the Chickens

We visited T.S. Smith's while we were in town for the Apple Scrapple. We went to their old farm stand to find it closed, then ventured across the highway to their new stand. Here we found a nice children's playground and a kids petting zoo with goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits. Here the kids had fun feeding the chicken and goats for mere pocket change! Once we were done feeding the animals, we proceeded through the outdoor pumpkin patch/tables and into the market. The new market seems much more commercialized compared to their old roadside farm stand. We noticed that they sold lots of produce, but prices seemed higher here. They also sold balsamic vinegars, bagged popcorn, honey, jarred items/sauces, meat sticks, cheese, butter, eggs, bacon, ham, scrapple, fresh flowers, Tail bangers dog treats/cookies, candy, etc. They also had coffee by the cup and apple cider donuts by singles, half dozen or dozen. The new location also features a deli/grill counter with sandwiches and ice cream. There is a dining patio outside by the kids playground in addition to a picnic table or two in the petting zoo area. We did purchase some of the apple cider donuts and broccoli. Donuts were just OK. We were somewhat disappointed in them as they had an odd floral undertone. Broccoli was very good. On our way out of the market, we noticed that the local library had set up a reading quest for the kids that day. The kids simply read the signs along the orchard and playground trail. Once completed, they were given a free fall activities packet and a free plush that matched the story of the day! Overall, our kids had fun feeding the goats and chickens. That alone was worth the stop. They had so much fun and it literally cost us pocket change! Market is nice, but seems much more commercialized and prices seemed higher. Donuts were NOT as good as they once were, but produce was excellent. Deli/grill seemed kind of high in terms of pricing so we passed on it. Playground beside the market was nice and FREE to visit. The library reading trail that day was a nice added bonus. I would visit again IF in the area.

My wife and and decided to venture here to break the boredom of the stay-at-home experience due to the virus. We were hoping for an experience Like Linvilla Orchard near our old home in north Wilmington. This was not that. This is a roadside produce stand that offers 12 varieties of apples (the only commercial apple grower in Sussex County). They have a huge selection of baked goods: pies, muffins, cakes, breads and cookies. In addition to apples, they had most of the fall vegetables plus pumpkins and gourds. They also have a deli sandwich are with melts and grill options. They offer Vandewende's ice cream in cones, milkshakes and by quart containers to go. They also have jelly, trail mix, apple cider slushies, candy, flowers, fruit baskets and more. They offer u-pick apples and pumpkins. I saw a sign for a petting zoo but forgot to check it out after shopping.

Stopped on the way home from OC to PA. The produce is way too expensive!
$5 for a cantaloupe, .77 for an ear of corn.Outrageous!
I bought a small container of dried fruit labeled "Just Fruit" (with no ingredients label) with different dried mixed fruit in it. It looked good. It was affordable too at just $2.00. As I drove off and opened it up and tried a couple, it was obvious it was more than "just fruit." All the fruit tasted about the same because they put a lot of sugar on them. Horrible! I wouldn't ever stop here again because of the price gouging.

This was a wonderful day and great alternative to the Apple-Scrapple Festival for my little ones. We will definitely visit again.

While Smith's is known for their apples, they also sell corn, watermelons, cantaloupes, lima beans, brussels sprouts, tomatoes and so much more at this market. Much of it is grown on their farms, so it is fresh and good quality. Love their asparagus in the Spring. And they have jellies, apple butter and jams too.

My parents introduced me to this lovely, more than a Farmer's, Market on the way to the Delaware Beaches. That's right, they scooped me on this one!

TS. Smith & Sons on Redden road is worth waiting for the left hand arrow off 13 easily found by taking the Bridgeville bypass on the way to the beach. That's right, it's on the left of Rt. 13 and it seems to always take about 2 left arrow light rotations to make that turn - but, as I said, worth it!

More than a Farmer's Market, but with all the great farm produce! I love getting blueberries here. They taste SO much better than those in the grocery store. Also available, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, cut your own Sunflowers, breads, hand soaps, and very nice clean bathrooms.

I recently blogged about *Beachy Travel Tips* with great places to stop off on the way to and from the Maryland and Delaware beaches featuring traffic tips, shopping, and of course, the best and cleanest pit stops. There's nothing like a clean bathroom! And if you can also get lovely local produce and more while you're there? All the better! TS Smith & Sons is just delightful!

Really nice people and so helpful, great produce, very nice selection of fresh baked goods which is really rare in this area. Convenient location. Finally a place to go for coffee/tea and a treat that is not D-Donuts.

I am so glad that they moved to their new and accessible location. This is a great place for sampling flavored peanut butter (I love the butterscotch peanut butter), and to find the exceedingly rare Black twig apples. Staff is friendly and helpful. Oh, and their pecan apple butter is wonderful. I can't wait for my next visit in a few weeks now!
