Lovers Leap trail is a relatively short hike (1.2 miles round trip I believe) that is family friendly. For what it's worth, it's not stroller friendly beyond the bridge which is right at the beginning of the hike. The views are nice and I like that it doesn't take long to do, so it's easy to fit in other activities for the day. My only complaint is that the trail is not the best maintained at some parts.

Interesting historical place and nice scenery. Located at the north end of Lake Lillinonah on the Housatonic River. The lake is the namesake of Pootatuck Indian Cheif Waramaug's daughter where she and her lover are said to have plunged to their deaths along the river's edge. There are some short walking trails. The attraction is the nice view at the steel bridge built in 1895 which overlooked some rapids on the river before the dam that created the lake was erected just north of Newtown, CT. The Hurd Estate on the north side of the river also has some walking trails and interests. There are some ruins in the area to explore.
A nice place to visit for a few hours for sightseeing or to walk your dog.

Not a very long hike but it has great views. To add more to the hike go down the back side and walk along the lake

My husband and I visited Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford, Connecticut on Friday, May 21,2021st. The park is quite scenic with a lot of interesting and unique history and offers a nice hike with a beautiful view at the Lovers Leap rock formation overlooking Lake Lillinonah.

The historic 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge, the “Fall’s Bridge”, which is located in the park, is one of only 4 iron lenticular truss bridges in Connecticut. The bridge, which was refurbished in 2007, is beautiful. The interpretive signage that you come to at the beginning point of the park, before reaching the bridge, provide very good information about the bridge; the Archaeological Preserve, depicting the Archaeological remains of Indian Life, including the Indian Long House; Chief Waramaug and his daughter Princess Lillinonah; the Catherine Hurd Estate; the former Bridgeport Wood Finishing Company and much more. This information provides background on the historic significance of the park and is quite interesting and educational. What I thought particularly interesting is the information about the “Great Falls”, including the fact that since the construction of the Shepaug Dam and the creation of Lake Lillinonah, the “Great Falls” are now 14 feet below the surface of the Housatonic River. It is interesting to know where they are at the current point in time.

We walked across the iron bridge and took a right and followed the Lovers Leap Trail, which is gravel with some rocks but relatively small rocks. The trail has a slight slope but is relatively easy to walk. This trail heads southeast 1,200 feet to the rock formation that gives the park its name. From here, legend has it, that the Pootatuck Indian Chief Waramaug’s daughter, Princess Lillinonah, and her lover plunged to their deaths. The Chief himself died in 1735.

As we walked on the Lovers Leap Trail, we saw the Housatonic River and its gorge from a high altitude. However, there were a lot of trees that obstructed our view. When we came to the Lovers Leap rock formation we got a very nice view of the headwaters of beautiful Lake Lillinonah, which is a great place to stop and enjoy the scenery and take some nice pictures. There are smaller dirt trails off the main Lovers Leap Trail that lead to the Tea House, Castle, and Hurd Estate ruins. But we did not take these trails due to lack of time and because they are not as well defined and as wide as the main trail. Also, the background information provided by the interpretive signage and the trail map indicates that what remained of these features of the park are ruins, although they are considered historic ruins. The trails off of Lovers Leap Trail include the Castle Loop, the Hurd Estate Trail, the Hurd Trail and the Falls Mountain Trail, which also has scenic views.

The map on the CT.gov state’s website for the park is quite helpful. In addition to the parts of the Lovers Leap Trail mentioned in the paragraph above, there is another trail that you reach before crossing the bridge on your right that leads to historic ruins of the Indian Spring House and other scenic overlooks and the Waramaug Loop Trail. This is a dirt trail but it is well defined. We began to take this trail but turned back due to lack of time, but we want to go back soon to hike this trail.

What we did not see but is worth mentioning, is the view to the south that overlooks a now submerged Goodyear Island named for an early fur trader from Derby who came there to trade with the established Indian Community. Industrial era ruins still exist near the water on the northwest section of the park.

Admission to the park is free. There is convenient parking available in a paved parking lot as well as a restroom, the composing type, and a picnic area. Dogs are allowed on a maximum seven foot leash and it seems to be a nice place to walk a dog.. Also, at the Lake Lillinonah side of the park there is a kayak/canoe portage.

Issue with Location/Directions:

There are some sites on the internet that say the address of the park is 178 Shortwoods Drive in New Milford, which is not correct. 178 Shortwoods Drive in New Failrfield is the location for Squantz Pond State Park. Directions for Lovers Leap State Park are provided on the CT.gov web site with an end point of Still Road. We put Still Road into our navigator and were led to a high-traffic area on Route 7 in New Milford before reaching Still Road. However, if you follow the specific directions on the web site that indicate to go onto Grove Road and then Still Road, you will be led down a more scenic route with a lot less traffic.

Enjoy all the different trails that branch off on either side of the bridge. It is a nice feeling to be at the altitudes for great views. The parking lot needs smoothing over, but the park is free. And it is accessible from town.

Park is free. Short walk to large iron bridge. after crossing the bridge bare right to top of trail to see the view of the lake. The trail to the top is uphill all the way, Rocky, not difficult but you could get winded if not used to walking. Once at the top are large boulders to the outlook. Makes for amazing views and pictures! We didn’t hike elsewhere. Take water for sure!

Old iron bridge at the entrance that you cross to get into the park. Short walk to a legendary vista over the Housatonic River and Lake Lllinonah. Trails pass by historical home foundations and chimneys and remnants of industrial works. Across the street from the main park is actually my favorite place. There is a little spur of the Housatonic River that goes by the train tracks and the location is very peaceful

My family and I had a hike here on 3/18. We hiked only on the east side of the lake where the hill overs the best view. I recommend getting to the cliff overlooking the lake and walking all the way to the summit. There are interesting ruins on the hill and we saw an immature bald eagle circling at the top of the hill.

This Connecticut park was dedicated in 2007, but the area comprised the Pootatuck Indians for hundreds of years along Housatonic River. Parking and visiting this splendid park are “FREE.”

There are a number of interesting displays telling about the history of the area. Not far from where you park the car, is a bright red 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge that was recently refurbished. This bridge is indeed rather photogenic.

A trail will take you up 1200 feet up to a rock that looks like it would be a “lovers leap.” There are a number of ruins from the Bridgeport Wood Finishing Company factory. Over fifty of the acres was an estate owned by Catherine Judson Hurd.

Legend and folklore state that a chief’s daughter fell in love with a white man. Circumstances would have it that both would die going over the falls nearby. The real tragedy is what happened to all the Indians in the area. New Milford was settled as early as 1707.
