They need to move the main public library out to a suburb. It's just not a library anymore. Only a fraction of the people there are actually there to use the library.
Much better off going to the Auraria campus library.

The staff here is always very friendly, helping me find the books I need every visit! Building itself is pretty cool, too!

E-books, audio books, great branch facilities (hopefully we can increase hours!), committed staff. We are SO lucky to have our library system!

This review is about the central (downtown) branch and flagship of the Denver Public Library system.
The building itself is fairly new, and absolutely wonderful. Beautiful in design, and nicely furnished. Escalators take you from floor to floor. The children's book area is for kids and parents only, and is set off by itself for reasons of safety.
Collections are well stocked and nicely displayed. I found it easy to locate the books and other materials I was after.
I especially liked the Reference area. I chose a carrel and spent half a day there, digging into the materials offered. Sheet music, a wide range of magazines, federal resources, etc, etc, etc. Wow, what a fine selection of materials.
The staff is superb. Professional, cordial and helpful. My wife spent the morning in the genealogy and Colorado history area, researching her family's background in a small Colorado town. Two staff members assisted her and were delightful.
Downstairs as you come in, there are displays of new books just added to the library's collection. We found several of interest.
Quite a place. Now for the caveat: in the year 2019, lots of street people hang out in the library. When I was there, probably more than 150 were in there. In the carrels, on the chairs, in the restrooms (one guy was changing clothes in there, another was shaving). None of them gave me any trouble, but their overwhelming presence could be intimidating for women and children. Also, some have body odor that is obvious. And some bring in luggage, food, drink and spread out, making those areas somewhat less inviting for the rest of us.
Library staff works hard to make sure that the street people cause no problems. Security guards make the rounds of the building. And the library has social workers who are there to make contact with street people who should be referred to mental health or other helpers.
Anyway....if you can navigate around the street people, you can find superb book and other information resources here.

What a beautiful design of the library. Do go check it out in downtown Denver. It is another great place.

I love the feel of the DPL. It's one of those great libraries that I remember from when I was a kid. I like to wander the stacks and see what I can find then slink off to a quiet corner to enjoy time alone with a good story. Definitely go in and take a look, decompress and enjoy.

Michael Graves's architectural historical references embody inhabited shapes of recognizable geometries in a playful assembly, very nice to view and appreciate. I did not experience the interior workings of the "Library" so I have no comment as to whether they work to satisfy necessary functions.
