We went on this tour not knowing anything about George Fox Steedman (the owner) or George Smith (the architect). Sally was our docent and was extremely knowledgeable about the home and both Georges. Our tour lasted close to two hours and included all the family rooms on the first and second floors, and the servant areas on the first floor. We then moved outside to enjoy the beautiful gardens and George’s workshop. This was a five-star tour. The home is in a neighborhood. Don’t show up early. There is a small parking lot, but because of neighborhood restrictions, the gate isn’t opened up until 10-15 minutes before your tour time and there is nowhere on the grounds to hang out until the tour begins.

Great tour by a knowledgeable volunteer. Beautiful place full of amazing pieces from all over the world and throughout history. I am so impressed with the original owner, a modern day Ben Franklin. We liked it better than Hearst Castle.

The gardens are lovely and the former owner, who took up blacksmithing and iron working in a big way, adorned his home with an array of intriguing dragons. Great fun

This small house tucked away in Montecito is a perfect place for a lover of history, art, Spanish-Colonial architecture, gardens, and even blacksmithing!
Some of the artwork in the house is directly from Spain, and was gathered by the same curator who decorated Hearsts' Castle. In fact, they picked it up on the same trip!
Overall, this is one of Montecito's top destinations, and a rare look into a little-changed 1920's lavish estate.

Classic Spanish Revival House and Garden that were planned with each other in mind in 1925. The house has all of its original contents and the house and garden that have been cared for continually for 95 years. Wonderful docent gave us a fact filled tour full of anecdotes and personal tidbits. He and we were having such a good time we agreed to go over the regular hour and a half.

Very interesting and enjoyable tour of the house, furniture, art and wonderful gardens. The docent was relaxed, knowledge and gave us an extra half hour tour. You need to book in advance. They keep the group small so that you can fit in the rooms. Another example of the Spanish influenced architecture in the area. Not suitable if you have mobility issues. Unstable courtyard, steep stairs, etc.

My husband and I visited recently. We are from the general area and had run out of things to do so we decided to see this, plus it would be an opportunity to visit a Montecito house (which I will never have again since I'm not a millionaire nor do I have millionaire friends). It's full of Spanish antiques and will remind you of Hearst Castle in miniature, but there is no pool here. I love antiques and architecture so I would give it a 5. My hubby found the tour a bit long so he would give it a 3. They had tons of mature oranges (February) so it was really nice to walk in the orange orchard. Too bad that they planted trees and it cuts off the view down to the ocean!

This is a beautiful house but what really makes it special is the art work, mostly brought over from Spain and elsewhere in Europe a hundred years ago, that was designed into the house, not just hung on the walls. The gardens are just as carefully designed.

What a grand way to spend a couple of hours in Santa Barbara. We've lived here for many years, but kept putting off visiting the Casa. Shame on us. Now we're looking forward to a return tour in the Spring, and bringing family with us. PAT SALEY was our docent/guide and she made the place come alive, covering all the recorded history, plus adding in bits of legend and lore. The architecture is a unique mash-up of eras and styles and the entire eleven acre estate tells the story of a fascinating polymath and true Renaissance man and his family. The gardens are beautifully designed and faithfully maintained. You'll wish, like we did, that the tour lasted more than two hours so that you could linger in the 1920's and 1930's a bit longer. Casa del Herrero is a treasure chest of historic delights.

The tours are $25 and reservations are required in advance. They give tours on Wed and Sat, I believe, at 10 and 2. We took the tour at 10 on a Wed. It was a nice group. They are an AHS affiliate if you are a member. There is a book about the property for sale for about $58 I recall, if you are interested. You cannot take pictures inside. We went during Christmastime so the house was decorated. This tour is about architecture, it is not for little kids. There were some very respectful Jr. High and High School kids on our tour and they seemed to like it.
Is there any way I can get in there to catch some Pokémans. That would be great.

Hi Charles,
THANK YOU! for asking the question that seems to perplex the most prospective visitors to Casa del Herrero.
As Visitor & Volunteer Coordinator at CdH I found Trip Advisor's information about our hours a bit confusing - the site lists us as 'open' Monday thru Saturday, 9-5, but those are OFFICE HOURS ONLY.
Actual TOURS require RESERVATIONS (taken over the phone, during Office Hours, above) and are available at 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. Wednesdays & Saturdays. Tours comprise about 10 or 12 to a group for a 90-minute, Docent-led, interpretive walking tour of the estate. Self-guided tours aren't permitted.
Does this information answer your question satisfactorily?
Cordially,
Susannah G.
