Well maintained cemetery. Take time to read the inscriptions and look at the carving of regiment badges on the stones - quite beautiful

We this beautiful cemetery while we were in Leros. I was surprised to find the place to be in such a well-maintained state. It is very calming to see how the fallen fighters of the dreadful war are remembered. The cemetery is beautifully designed, with extremely green lawn which is obviously well watered, despite the hot weather in Greece during the time we visited (July). Very respectful place, and made me shed a tear or two.

Great war cemetery, funded by the War Graves Commission and tended to by local people and gardener. Lovely monument and very peaceful location.

I find war cemeteries very moving and this was no exception. It related to the battle of Leros and honoured army, air force and naval personnel. There were a large number of officers killed in that battle. I think the most senior was a lieutent colonel, and a fair number of majors and catains as well as lower ranks and enlisted personnel. I also noticed that a number of army personnel had been seconded from their regiment to another. A little different to the cemeteries I have seen in France.

Visited as part of a tour group. Always sad places to visit but good to see how calm & peaceful and well maintained this was.

I felt quite emotional here,it is keep in excellent condtion. Thank you to the people of Alinda. its very easy to find,on the main road as you leave Alinda.

Saturday early evening 20th July and we parked up outside this small but beautiful War Cemetery.
Leros War Cemetery is situated on the eastern side of the Island of Leros, and overlooks the sea in the picturesque Aghia Marina Bay, a fitting resting place for the Fallen.
The Cemetery is the burial place for 183, of which 13 Sailors, 162 Soldiers and 4 Airmen were from the United Kingdom. Also 2 Airmen from the Royal Canadian Air Force and 2 Soldiers from the South African Army.
The sandstone coloured headstones are laid neaty in a number of rows, all beautifully maintained. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintain the Cemetery.
It was rather emotional walking along the rows of the graves, reading the inscriptions, a lot of these brave young men were only in their early twenties. Those from the same Regiments, the graves are together in small clusters.
Just inside the gate in one of the brick gateposts in a small little metal box there is a file with names and details, of those identified, laid to rest here.There was also a visitors book were messages can be left.
Wheelchair access to this cemetery is possible via main entrance. The Cemetery is permanently open and may be visited at any time. There is no admission fee.
We were here about 25 years ago and not much has changed apart from the new wall and gate.
