A ‘must see’ on the Nakasendo

What a surprise to find a large and well curated museum behind the small street frontage. This is not a collection of rusting memorabilia, but a properly conserved and archived treasure trove of history. The museum spans several buildings across the street too. The staff were very helpful and made the whole experience even more worthwhile, with detailed stories of the history of the main buildings and the people who lived there and their very distinguished visitors. Like other reviewers I won’t spoil the surprise!!
Enough English signs on the exhibits to make the displays and explanations meaningful for non- Japanese speakers / readers.
Very well worth while spending a couple of hours.

We had a bit of a rainy day while we were in Tsumago in November. The museum was a welcome way to get out of the rain and learn about the history of this town and the surrounding area. A combination ticket will take you through the museum and through two restored houses or inns that were used by traveling dignitaries in the Edo period. Everything is beautiful restored and presented. The museum has lots of info, and we were happy to see much of it has short English translations of the information. We also had a very cheery guide to show us around the Okuya Hayashi residence, a traditional waki-honjin for officials on tour. Not to be missed!

A hidden surprise

We visited on a cold and wet day so already it was a plus to get in somewhere dry. We were the only Western visitors and a delightful young girl offered to guide us through the main part of the museum. This turned out to be extremely good as she made the place come alive with her stories and knowledge. She explained about the history and of the family that built it. The visit of the Emperor and the special work done for his visit ( you will have to visit to find out what this was!!). This was certainly the best visit to an old building we have been to in Japan and all down to the lovely guide. So a big tip - try to get a guide to explain the building as otherwise you will miss a large part of the visit. The museum goes on to many other buildings and across the road to the major "Honjin" which was extensively used when the Nakasendo trail was in full use. Overall a very good visit and well worth a visit.

Very Worthwhile

This museum is much larger than first appears. It includes a large home where important daimyo used to stay while traveling on the Nakasendo Trail through Tsumago. Amazingly, the dark wood inside this traditional home was originally light colored as freshly cut wood would be but became blackened by the smoke from the fire as these homes did not have chimneys due to all of the rain in Japan. We had a private tour of the home with a very knowledgeable and charming tour guide. Read Clavel's Shogun before you go. Then, you will be able to picture the traveling daimyo and samurai through this village and staying at this spot.

We learned a lot about the history of the village as well as its famous visit from the emperor Meiji, for whom special facilities were built. Lovely gardens also.

Worth some time to look at the structure and the details. Interesting in showing the style of the early Meiji era.
