If you appreciate coffee El Museo del Cafe is not to be missed. It tells the story of coffee from it's beginnings in Africa with goats to coffee from Chiapas in Mexico today. Very educational. And Raphael was our guide. He spoke English very well and was friendly and welcoming.

The best part of all was tasting with Raphael and Khalid, both English speakers, who led us through a couple of tastings of local coffee. One very good and one just one of the best I've ever tasted.

A great experience, educational, friendly and delicious. Enjoy.

We visited this museum a few days ago. I nice little museum in the building that previously housed a natural history museum (Now moved by the Regional Museum). It does a nice job of telling the story of Chiapas coffee from it's start to the present day. One thing to be warned, it's mostly in Spanish, so if you don't speak / read it bring a translator. The website had said it was free when we checked, but they charge a small admission - which pretty much covers the cost of a cup of nice coffee, which they give you at the end. A worthy outing in the dowtown area.

The museum is great, well laid out - and does a great job of telling the story of Chiapas coffee from inception to the present day. There are a couple of important things to know:
1. There is little English in here - you'll need your Spanish to really enjoy the displays.
2. They give you a tabley PC at the entrance that can tell "some" of the story in English. Bring some headphones as the audio from the speaker is weak even when turned all the way up.
3. The website had the wrong hours and said the museum was free. The hours are better than the website suggests, and the small cost is pretty much the cost of a good cup of coffee - and they give you a nice cup of coffee at the end.

Had to visit tuxtla for the day, and ended up visiting the cafe museum.
Very nice museum showing about the history of the coffee and the process.
Like most of Mexican museum, the info is mostly in spanish, but not to worry - I got Holkan as my English guide, so I ended up actually learning about coffee :)

This small but charming museum is just off of the main plaza in downtown Tuxtla. You'll learn about how coffee first came to Mexico, how much us produced in various states, and even about coffee's health benefits. I was surprised to learn that despite being a large coffee producer and exporter, Mexico's per capita coffee consumption is actually rather low. Admission is 25 pesos, quite a bargain, and includes a cup of freshly brewed coffee, but a nice coffee shop on the premises would be a good idea.

*as of 12/27, the museum is currently under restoration, please contact the museum before you visit**

I live in Tuxtla and I take all of my visitors to this museum. Even if you don't love coffee, you can get a lot out of the experience. The museum comes with a guided tour and a coffee tasting afterwards. The guides are great - though depending on which one, you might need someone in your group to translate as not all speak English fluently. The vast majority of the signs in the museum are in Spanish, but don't let this deter you. They talk about the artisanal coffee process here in Chiapas, what makes the coffee here so special, and how coffee actually came to Mexico.

If it's open when you're here, I highly recommend visiting this. They also have movie nights and different events in their colonial style building (a rarity in Tuxtla).

Parking is a challenge, but if you are staying in the center of Tuxtla, you won't need it. You'll be able to walk as it's conveniently located next to the main government plaza along the Avenida Central.
