Better to see with your eyes. Wonderful views each corners, easy walking along pathway. Should not missed.

It was pouring when we got here.So we did a quick walk up to the 1st viewpoint and took some pix.Intended to hike around the area but the rain was unforgiving.

Arguably the highlight of our 6 day trip to Iceland. Park at the bottom and do the 30 min moderate/easy hike to the end of the trail at the waterfall. The look outs and views off the trail are breath taking. BE PREPARED. We wore rain pants and rain coats to block the wind and drizzle. We saw many day trippers (some in shorts and $1 rain ponchos) who were not enjoying themselves! As with many of these stops, you pay to park by scanning an app in the lot then paying online. We had a lot of difficulty with this.

It's about a 3km round trip from the lower car park to the top and back, or you could park at the top if mobility challenged. However, going from the bottom is a great chance to stretch the legs and get the heart pumping. There are lovely views all the way up, The track goes along the upper level so you look down on the rock formations and steep walls of the canyon. it's not a difficult climb and the view from the platform at the top is spectacular. This is well worth a visit.

Firstly, the canyon is beautiful & is easily worth five stars. It’s popular hence all the erosion to the trail paths. The road to it isn’t as bad as some make out, I found it straightforward in a 2wd car, in Summer admittedly. Easy viewpoint is a short stroll to the bridge over the river near the car park or you can hike up to the top viewpoint like I did. Anyhow, the reason this gets one star is the lack of facilities. All four WC’s out of order with a sign saying nearest WC was several km away. Really not good enough when you are still expected to cough up 1000 isk for parking.

We visited at the beginning of August and it was a relatively low level of water - sadly there was no way to walk the canyon at water level of which I was hoping to for that "surrounded" water level photography feeling.
The walk uphill can feel steep at times but is completely worth it once you get to the viewing points. Sadly they have had to close off some of the previous viewing points as the foot traffic at the canyon has increased significantly since some canadian popstar (JB) decided to film a music video there as people were damaging the moss :(
That being said, there is plenty of viewing available and get there early enough and it feels like you have the canyon to yourself. The parking costs 1000 ISK for 24hours which is fine, unfortunately all of the toilets are out of use due to "drought" - that made me laugh...
Be cautious if you fly a drone in the canyon - those walls are high and its easy to lose signal...

The site is free, the parking is not. Make sure you have internet, for you pay by app. The walk is not far, but it is quite steep with a lot of steps. We did not go further than the first viewing point, but if you are fit, there is another further uphill.

This really is a beautiful canyon that's worth a visit. The walk to the viewing platforms, though up hill, is easily manageable for anyone that isn't mobility challenged. From the top there are great views down into the canyon as well as of the valley in the other direction.

There are two paths to the viewing platform. One is a from-the-bottom-up trail which requires climbing a path about 1 km long to the altitude of some 150 meters. The other one is significantly shorter and practically flat. They both have the same end point but if you go the long route you will have a few memorable views of the canyon along the way.

Your post is very helpful, especially the map. We plan to visit the canyon during a trip to Iceland in late June 2023. My wife has some mobility issues so we would prefer going to the “easier side”. How long is the trip on the “bumpy dirt road”? Could a basic small car (not 4WD) be OK on the dirt road?

I would say the same, the road isn't long at all and unless it rained or it's winter time it's definitely fine in a regular car - considering you had mentioned mobility issues I am not sure if it's a good idea as - if you choose to go the paved route 206 you will need to go up quite a few stairs and from here it's you will walk to the "main platform" = longer walk, if you end up choosing however the F206 you will be super close but here you end up on the higher elevation and need you to walk downhill (thus return uphill) - it's a not a bad walk or challenging at all on this side but I would definitely go this F206 route instead - shorter/easier and the incline/uphill is via car
Hi, can you walk the canyon alone or do you need a tour guide? Any other considerations if traveling here in July?
I see that this has been closed the last couple years in the spring, but reopens around June 1st. Is this something that typically happens every spring? I am visiting the area about May 7-8, and would like to know if it will be possible to visit so I can book my airbnbs accordingly.
If it is closed, will we still be able to access the an area with a great view? Or would the entrance/road be totally closed off?
Thank you!

My understanding is that the previous closure had been to allow the area to recover from damage done to it after thousands of Justin Beiber fans flocked there to see it following a video he filmed there.
The area has since recovered and has been reopened as far as I know.

Is the road far away from what? The canyon? No. From Reykjavik? Yes.
Hello there! I am planning my trip for end of October and I was wondering if someone can tell me how many time takes from the upper parking to the last view point. Thank you!

Depends on your fitness … :-) But it took me (71 yrs) 45 minutes as ig is going up all the time. But take your time to enjoy the views. My guess: Up & down & viewing = 90 minutes.

My wife and I will be visiting Fjadrargljufur Canyon next June and we will be driving a 2wd car. I am pleased to learn that this poster believes that we will be “fine” as long as we drive slow. However, other posters note that you need to have 4wd to get to the upper canyon parking area. Could others weigh in and clarify if a 2wd car is OK. Thank you.

Good morning,
if you want to drive to the upper parking lot you will need a 4x4 since the road is a mountain road (marked F206 to Laki). However if you continue the 206 you can reach the lower parking lot were a 2x2 car is sufficient. The road 206 is part asphalt and part gravel, just drive carefully on the gravel part.

How hard is the walk going down into The Valley? I had a knee injury in Iceland last year and already booked this tour. Is very steep? Thank you in advance for any input. Patrícia.

Patricia-
Our tour group was let off at the upper parking lot and walked down to the lower one - easily done in 30 minutes or so (add ten for more photo stops).
Jens is correct - no walking allowed in the valley itself (unless you're filming a new episode of Game of Thrones?? some scenes were filmed there) The path slopes gradually downhill - - if you have any doubts, bring a collapsible walking stick. You'll be fine.

I need tips on how to get to Fjadrarglijufur Canyon from Reykjavic just for a day trip without driving. We just want to get to Kirkjubaejarklaustur to take a super jeep tour of the Canyon. Thanks in advance!

Fjadrarglijufur Canyon is only 100 metres in length, so I am not sure what you mean by a Super Jeep tour of it. In addition, you are no longer allowed to walk through it.
The canyon is not at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. From Reykjavik, you drive on Route #1 and turn left onto Route #208.This is about 22km west of Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
Continue on #208 - it is dirt - until you come to a right turn where #208 continues up a hill.
You have two options at this intersection.
One is go straight ahead until you reach the car park at the base of the canyon. There are toilet facilities there, right next to the start of the track that takes you to the top of the canyon and a some viewing platforms.
The second option is to take the right turn and continue on #208 up the hill. Shortly you will see a small parking area on the left. Parking there will save you the walk up the hill from the bottom. From there it is a short walk to the viewing platforms.
