We parked the car and walked for about 5 minutes up the the pavement. Notice board explains what it is and how it was formed. Worth a quick stop

Its just off the road so if you have a few minutes, then why not. Otherwise its just some hexagonal basalt columns in a field that is shared with some sheep that really don't want you there. Was cool to see before we later saw similar dozens of times.

Park right off the road and go through the gate. It is a just a quick site of interest. I wouldn't worry if you miss this one.

Short walk of five mins from the parking lot behind you to this point . It is an area of basalt rock that looks like a piece of ancient floor while it is natural. Called the 'church floor' this little natural basalt wonder is really an excellent road side treasure. I enjoyed seeing a different view of the basalt columns. Visit Kirkjugolf if you're traveling by and have a few minutes to spare.

Close to Route 1 and Kirkjubaejarklaustur and shouldn't be missed by anyone driving past, as useful rest stop. We were first visitors on day after a lot of snow, so interesting 5 minute walk from the car park, alongside stream and over a small bridge. We told the next visitors the route, as not entirely clear in the snow.
We had to brush the snow off it to see it. It is a flat pavement composed of the tops of mostly hexagonal basalt pillars. The completely natural result of water and ice erosion, this looks like a stone floor created by a master craftsman.
Sorry about typos on description of photos but takes too long to change and upload all the photos again!

Located just off the main Ring Road and accessed by a nice gravel path, this place features an unusual, flat surfaced geological formation of six sided basalt columns arrayed like giant floor tiles in a meadow. Quite unique indeed and worth checking out!

ok, it's pretty curious and odd, once you find it, but in the end it's just few basalt blocks on the ground.
Might be worth the visit if you really have time

On the road to the wonderful Stjórnarfoss Waterfall, there is a parking lot to the left. A five minute walk takes you to Kirkjugolf, but do not expect anything magnificent or grand – there are lots of imposing basalt columns in Iceland and here you can walk on top of them, that’s all.

Nearby to the Skaftarskali cafe and petrol stop (there seem to not be a town here just a few petrol stations and guesthouses ?) was the 'Kirkjugolf' the floor of the church.
This natural monument is actually nothing to do with any church but is a small area of basalt columns that have been worn down to resemble a grand octagonal tiled floor - hence the name.
It was hardly worth the traipse through the field after the more famous basalt column natural monuments around the world (Giant's Causeway in Ireland or the Organ Pipes' in NSW etc.)'

This is a small natural curiosity worth an evening walk if you're already in the village, but otherwise not worth a detour off the ring road. Mostly interesting to those unfamiliar with the symmetry of basalt. It's the kind of thing small places use to intrigue strangers.
