When we recently visited the Museum and Heritage Centre was closed, indefinitely from what I understood. The Visitor Centre is open and there is a large, outdoor display of tanks, etc. Somewhat interesting, but I expected more. Very disappointing the museum was closed. Hopefully it will reopen soon.

We stayed overnight at the IHG property on base but in the morning the Heritage Center had not yet opened when we had to hit the road.
Outside around the grounds of the Heritage Center are a few pieces on static display. One is a Cessna O-2 Skymaster and the other is the Control Car for a Land-Train.
We did, however, drive down to the Wahner E Brooks Historical Exhibit located at the Visitor Center and walk around and among the static displays located at that area. There is also a memorial plaque describing Camp Laguna Desert Training Center and its role in WWII.
Fascinating look at all types of armor from WWII up to and including the Cold War.

As of the end of March 2022, the Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center is open again to visitors on certain days of the week!
I visited on a Thursday in late March, and was told that the Heritage Center was open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. A sign at the Heritage Center seemed to say that it was open on Fridays as well. The best thing to do is probably call ahead of a planned visit.
In any event, the rating is for the whole experience, which seems to feature two main parts -- (i) the armored vehicles and artillery displayed outside the "Visitor Control Center", and (ii) the exhibits in the "Heritage Center" further inside the Proving Ground complex. Both are educational and informative, but in different ways.
The Visitor Control Center exhibits captivate and inform. Most of TripAdvisor's photos seem to feature the tanks and artillery from this area, which seems accessible to the public on most days (best to call to confirm).
Visitors need to go to the Control Center first to get clearance to enter the base at gate leading to the Heritage Center.
By way of comparison, the separate Heritage Center does not seem to feature military hardware (with one large notable exception), and will likely be most interesting to adults with a deep connection to or research interest in the Yuma Proving Ground. Visitors to the Heritage Center should not expect a standard museum, but rather a collection of exhibits about Yuma Proving Ground's history and about other topics relating to 20th and 21st century history. These history topics span several decades and cover diverse topics around the globe.

Traveled from Indiana to Yuma. Lived on the Proving Grounds 55 years ago and traveled to YPG to visit the Post & Heritage Museum. I was told I couldn't visit the post nor the Heritage Museum. Due to covid and security. Yet when we drove by there were many motor homes and RV's.Nothing on the web sites informing about the closure!

After a very long drive, we were told at the gate that we needed a Visitor Pass but the Visitor Center was closed … ?! Plus, the whole base was closed due to Covid. The young man at the gate was not very articulate or helpful.
We pulled away and called to see if there was a misunderstanding. The gentleman who answered was very kind and explained that yes, there was no access and he was unsure that order would be lifted.
Big disappointment. I doubt we’ll be in the area again

But the check in area just before entering the bas has a number of vehicles on display A slight detour of the main road is worth the effort.

There are many military vehicles as well as missiles and unique weaponry. A great place to visit for the military enthusiast as well as children. You can walk up to the vehicles and such. A great experience.

It is a good place to walk, relax, take the children for a walk and share a good meal outdoors with the family.

I was planning to see the proving ground, but not if the wait time is 45 min to get in. Why so long?

Reservations call 800-293-0071 or 928-783-0071 on 11/1/2015 for next season. They fill FAST. Not good for kids. No public transportation. No cafe' on site. Museum is real good. Hats and sun glasses are a good idea. Be sure you have valid government issued ID with picture.
