hard hike, worth the effort!
Mei 2019
If you get a permit for the 8mi hike (turns out to be closer to 10), make sure to be prepared! It's amazing hike that passes through beautiful terrain, but the elevation change is brutal. If you take a dog, make sure they are fit enough for the journey... or that you are fit enough to carry them back if needed.

Fossil Creek Hike
Jan 2019 • Teman
Do yourself a favor and do this hike in the winter. We only saw one other hiker the entire day. We were wearing light jackets and were comfortable during late January. We entered from the Verde Valley side on the fairly rough road. Since your already there take the extra time to visit Childs where you can see the decommissioned power plant. And for those adventurous type ford the river following the rope and look for the hotsprings on the other side of Verde River.

Fossil spring is a beautiful oasis
Sep 2018 • Keluarga
Main entrance is about 10-15 miles east of Camp Verde on highway 260. The spring itself is incredible with a waterfall & lush greenery. However, parking is extremely limited (you need to sign up weeks ahead of time online for a pass) & the entrance road is 14 miles & pretty rough in places (there is no longer an entrance from the east (Pine/ strawberry side).

Gorgeous views on the way down and back up, and amazing scenery at the bottom
Mar 2018 • Teman
At the time of year we went (March), there was no permit required to park. It was close to 30 degrees Fahrenheit at the trailhead, but warmed up to the 70s at the bottom of the canyon.

This is not an easy hike, for someone who's not used to the heat or the elevation. It's well over 4 miles each way, and has nearly 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Also, the trailhead starts at over 5,500 feet, which means the air is thinner than a lot of people are used to (unless they're coming from someplace like Flagstaff or Denver). It is an easy trail to follow, but there is also a lot of it that is rocky. And there are a lot of areas where there is no shade.

When we were hiking out, we saw some tourists who were in Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon, and they said when they searched for other places to go, this popped up, so they headed to this one next. They had just one liter bottle of water between them, and were assuming they could just refill at the bottom. (There is a spring, but if you are getting the water from anywhere downstream, it's not recommended to do without a filter.) They also didn't have any map, GPS, and/or hadn't downloaded the trail to their phone; they were less than a mile in and asked us "How much further?"

Please, don't be those people. Bring at least a couple of liters of water for each person - a gallon if it's summer. And prepare by having a map or downloading the trail to your phone. Plan on it taking about twice as long to climb out as it does to walk down, and be sure you leave early enough so it's not too hot.

It's really important for people to know that this is a wilderness area; there are no services after you leave the trailhead (and even there, it's just bathrooms).

All that said, it was definitely worth it, and I am looking forward to doing it again soon!

Need reservations, take plenty of water, not for the unfit, but amazing!
Jul 2018 • Teman
It's long...you will need a good 4-6 hours depending on your fitness level. Hiking shoes are best, but at least tennis shoes for sure.It can be hot also, make sure you wear a hat. And take a bunch of water...a gallon per person...and I take more as I am a thirsty hiker. But it's glorious all the way to the "toilet bowel," as it is called. I wouldn't take any little kids...it's just too long. Older kids should be fine. It is closed a lot due to fire restrictions and you have to make a reservation with the forest service to park there, so don't come unprepared...also the gate opens at 8 a.m. and not a second prior, so don't think you will be starting at 6 a.m. There are no facilities of any kind along the way...nothing. So come prepared, but it is a journey well worth it.

Amazing Waterfalls and Underwater Caves
Jul 2017 • Teman
I've been all around the Arizona wilderness and this place was one of the coolest spots in the state.

There are excellent spots to jump into the crystal clear water and swim. The waterfalls are huge and amazibg and there is a spot where you can even go behind the falls.

Also dont miss a chance to swim through the underwater cave into the "toilet bowl"

Great experience, a must see! The water is so clear and refreshing. The trail was easy to follow and each parking lot had clean restrooms. Would be nice if they had water fountains as well.My family and I had a great time, I cant wait to do it again.

Beyond what I had expected
Mei 2016
It's hard to do only because it's so long and flat. They are warning signs every couple feet in the beginning to scare you. If you're an experienced hiker and have a couple bottles of water you'll be just fine. If you go up to the "toilet bowl" it's an amazing swimming hole. I went the wrong direction the first time I went. Don't forget to get your parking pass before!

Beautiful Place to Visit in Arizona
Jun 2016 • Keluarga
Now this place is wonderful and beautiful!
One of Az natural hidden beauty gems!
The hike is long and you have to get an Az permit before going into the preserve.
Warning if you have small children recommend having life jackets and water shoes and someone to help carry them in and out of canyon. We had the clan so we were able to make the hike to the waterfall.
Another Caution is to make sure you are not drinking and safe. There is no rescue that can come in and get you if you get injured. However, the water is crystal blue and it is one of natures most spectacular site. Take plenty of water and snacks and towels, and do not forget a trash bag to take your garbage out of the preserve when you leave we want to keep Natures beauty!!! We had a lot of fun and so did the kids. Happy Travels!
