I have always had a fear of open water which I've wanted to conquer for years so I was super nervous when I first contacted Benthos Diving school.
l was put in touch with their amazing instructor, Pablo. We exchanged a few whatsapp's and I explained my fear. He was so friendly and understanding and made me feel at ease almost immediately.
I've never dived before so needed to do both the theory and practical open water dives all together. As i'm only in Bali for a short amount of time I was loathed to spend hours on end inside a classroom learning theory.
Pablo assured me this wouldn't be the case and told me "I prefer to teach PADI in a practical way, you'd hate me if I make you spend hours in the classroom". This cemented my decision to do my PADI Open Water with Benthos and I decided to book my course immediately.
I turned up at 8am on day 1, paid the $400 fee, which, having researched is a great price to pay for a PADI Open Water course! (NB Don't forget to bring your passport as they need this to register you!).
I discovered I was the only person doing the PADI course at that time so had a 1-2-1 instructor for the whole course also! Wow, so lucky. I imagine so many dive centres would charge extra for that!
We started off with fitting a wetsuit, goggles and dive boots. Then it was straight into learning about the equipment, what everything was, how to put it together, all of the safety measures. It was all explained bit by bit and was not overwhelming at all. Pablo's way of teaching is pretty genius, practical learning was sooo much easier than learning from a book or watching videos.
Then shortly after we were in the water and learning the in water safety features. Taking my first breath underwater was so strange and not long after I properly freaked out and nearly quit. Pablo was so understanding. He was so patient with me and took everything super slowly, even offering a full refund if I wanted to stop (something I can't imagine another diving school and instructor doing).
He was so kind and really helped me to push through my fear barrier and before I knew it I was in the 3m end of the pool learning the safety features there! We did a little bit of 'classroom' theory based stuff but mainly it was 'on the job' learning.
By the end of Day 1 I felt so amazing! I really felt like i'd overcome a personal battle and had Pablo by my side cheering me on. I was given the theory book to take home with me that evening to learn about the things we'd covered (which was a lot but given the way he taught it throughout the day it didn't feel like an exhausting day of classroom learning and I felt i'd absorbed so much organically).
Day 2 was another 8am start and this was the longest day (8am-4pm). It was our first day we were going diving in open water - argh! I have to jump off a boat, into open water, my worst fear. Again, Pablo was with me every step of the way. Explaining each and every thing we'd be doing.
Our first dive was in a semi closed lagoon, "Maximum 5m deep" Pablo assured me... "you wait until you see what's down there" he said. His clear love for diving and bubbly personality is infectious and soon enough I was excited to get into the water. Me, excited to get into water, unheard of!
I pushed myself backward into the water and in seconds I was floating in the open water. Pablo by my side. After another mild freak out Pablo calmed me down and soon enough we were under water. Oh my god is all I can say. If like me you are petrified at the thought of diving then please, please push through your initial fear. You wont regret it. it's an incredible feeling. We saw lots of fish and just breathing underwater in open water is an experience in itself that I cannot explain.
What felt like minutes later we popped up. I was exhilarated. Massive smile on my face. "How long do you think we were down there?" asked Pablo... "About 20 minutes?" I replied... "Nearly an hour" he replied. An hour!!!! he was with me every step of the way, I felt so safe and couldn't believe i'd just breathed underwater for nearly an hour!
We got back on the boat (less gracefully for me than Pablo) and had fruit, water and chocolate biscuits. We waited for an hour before doing our next dive. Pablo explaining the safety reasons and theory behind why you wait. Again, all of this 'on the job' learning that I didn't realise I was learning and absorbing at the time.
We moved to a different site, slightly more calmer and dived to a max of 12m. I practically threw myself off the boat this time, excited to get in. Something a few hours before i'd been scared to it. Initially I thought 12m, uh oh, what if i freak out that far underwater, but the dive was incredible. We saw 2 turtles, a sea snake, 2 stingrays and tons of tropical fish. I didn't even have time to notice the depth. If anything I wanted to go deeper!
We went back to the dive centre and did a bit of classroom theory and pool learning emergency drills and clearing my mask (something as a contact lens wearer I personally hated). Again Pablo talked me through this step by step and soon enough there I was, clearing my mask. The man is a genius!
That night after some more reading and theory I slept like a baby. Knowing day 3 was going to be another full on day - 2 dives to 18m, a shipwreck and my exam!
Day 3 and it was final 2 dives and exam day... nerve wracking as we were going to 18m.. by this point though my fear had almost gone. We entered from land (putting your gear on in water is a LOT harder than doing it on the boat I can tell you haha). The dive site was incredible. Apparently it's one of the Top 10 shipwreck sites in the world. We saw loads of tropical fish. Sadly no turtles this time but the wreck itself is a site to behold.
We came out of the water, had fruit, water and biscuits again and rested for an hour. After my final dive I really didn't want to come up. Learning to dive and especially learning to dive with Pablo has been one of the best experiences of my life. I still have a slight fear of water but it's nowhere near what it was.
Back to the dive centre, exam and an almost perfect score (just 6 questions wrong) I can now proudly say I am now a qualified PADI Open Water Diver. All thanks to Pablo and Benthos Bali Diving.
If you'd have told me half way through Day 1 that i'd be diving to 18m and a shipwreck I would have told you that was nearly impossible.
This is a looooong review and if you've read this far then well done. I don't normally write reviews but wanted to do this as I cannot recommend Pablo highly enough. He truly is a great diving instructor. He literally held my hand every step of the way and helped me overcome a lifelong fear of water.
Couple of things to note - I'd recommend if doing your PADI to focus solely on your course. Don't plan to have big nights in-between dives as not only will you be exhausted from all of the things you've learnt and new experiences but you want to be fresh for diving the following day. It's also not recommended to drink before diving.
I initially emailed and didn't hear back. I think my email may have gone into Spam so i'd highly recommend contacting them by WhatsApp. Pablo is super responsive

Also, you can't fly, exercise or go to altitude for 24 hours after diving so please bear this in mind when planning your trip. Thankfully I still have a couple of weeks left in Bali and am planning a dive trip to Nusa Penida in a few days to dive with Manta rays. Officially hooked!

He is a great guide and instructor, very friendly and helpful.
Anyone wanting to dive in this area I would highly recommend benthos dive shop.

Contacted Benthos before arriving and there replies were quick and answered all my queries. When I arrived in Candidasa I popped in and quickly arranged a diving day to Tulamben.
Had my own gear but rented a computer as mine is on the blink. I didn't stay here but in a nearby villa where they picked me and dropped me off. Overall with transfer diving computor hire and lunch was great value. My 2 dive buddies hired gear and it was all good and had no problems.
This outfit is extremely professional well organised and knows how to look after us traveling divers. Our dive master Gede was awsum. Thank you Gede. He even assisted me out of the water after second dive as I struggled a little with the rocks. He was very attentive during the dive and showed us lots of stuff we would have missed. Did 2 dives on the wreck. Both quite different.
Was a great day out and will definitely dive with them next time in Candadasa.

Amazing Team. Starting from Eva she is lovely and very responsive. The Driver the fastest and most smiling man on Bali always on time :)
Last but not least our great dive guide Juan who made this little trip for my family soo unique. Manta Point was amazing, Blue Lagoon and and and. Many thanks also to Danny.Pablo you have a fine team, professional and friendly. I can highly recommendate and lunch was also amazing.

Excellent staff which does everything to bring you into the water. After a pool session I was within few hours later around the liberty wreck doing my first two open water dives. My instructor Pablo managed to combine theory and practical skills training in a very efficient way so you get your experience in a reasonable time. I always felt safe and had a proper briefing and debriefing which perfect for my learning type. You can choose the diving site depending on your skills. I saw a tremendous amount of underwater wildlife during these four open water dives and had plenty of time for safety and emergency drills in the pool in the dive resort. You get excellent food provided during the course days including water and towels. They also provided very helpful recomendations about further destinations according your diving trip! If I would have stayed longer in the area I would definitely also do the PADI Advance Open Water diver course at Benthos!

Great diving with Pablo and Vera. Highly recommended! They were very friendly, helpful and professionel. In the dives water, snacks and towels are included, as well as a very delicious lunch.
Pablo made suggestions about the best dive sites considering the level of the divers and the weather so you could decide where to go. We had great dives in Tulamben at the Liberty wreck and Amed.

Perfectly organized diving base, equipment, dive sites, preparation for departure from the dive, everything at the highest level. I dived with Komang Suntanaya called Comando fantastic diving guide, knows the reef well and can take care of safety.

My girlfriend and I went on a dive to the Liberty II shipwreck. She did snorkelling and I did scuba. It was my first dive but my instructor Pablo was excellent and great fun too. He was extreemly knowledgable and very professional. A must do if you are anywhere near Candidisa and want to try diving, even if you have never done it!
