Poor Infrastructure Will Make Journey Times On This This Train VERY Unpredictable

Our experience started with an email to advise that the Blue Train Reception was temporarily closed and that check-in would be at the Sheraton. This was a lovely trip spoiled by a rundown infrastructure within the country. We were so well looked after, and we soon knew most of the guests on the train. They certainly used up every inch of space in the cabins. The only negative was that it felt that the train was stationary longer than it was travelling. In the first 26hrs we only made just under 300km. We were stopped multiple times sometimes for an hour others considerably longer. We were due to arrive in Kimberly at 10.30am for our excursion to the excavation. However, we didn't arrive until just before 6pm and we're unable to do the excursion as it was dark. Then through the night the train made up time with only 260km to go at 9am so an average speed of just under 30km/hr would have gotten into Cape town at 6pm on schedule. We spent so much time stopped and arrived in Cape Town at 11.35pm which was the equivalent of an average of just under 18km/hr. This meant that we missed the most beautiful scenery coming into the Cape as we were in darkness. Problems of no electricity in some regions, broken down trains etc were the main reasons for our delay. We really enjoyed the train but felt it was more a stationary train than a moving one. The experience on the train was excellent however the infrastructure is so run down that I suspect that the Blue Train is rarely punctual. DON'T book it if you have a tight commitment like a flight give yourself at least one day’s cushion. Some things advertised such as the camera on the front of the train allowing you to view the journey in the club car have been removed (but still advertised). When asked the staff said the camera was removed with no plan to reinstall and suggested this was down to it being stolen. If you want to book the train so that you can look out at the passing scenery, I would recommend you pick a country where the infrastructure is more reliable and most definitely not S Africa. It really did feel as we were stationary for a large part of the journey. If you don't mind being stationary and want the Blue Train experience, I most certainly would recommend the train for the service and food but most certainly not to watch scenery pass by. In the end were were disappointed by the experience due to the S. African infrastructure being so run down.

Not as good as some reviews and the train’s own website suggests. Arrived in Pretoria at 8.30am on Day 3 when we were told to expect an arrival time between 12.00 and 6pm. We were kicked off the train at 10.30am having spent less than 48 hrs on the train during what is meant to be a 3 day trip. Would have thought they would at least offer us lunch on Day 3 but I guess this saves the company money. Staff were friendly enough. Cuisine is ok but certainly not fine dining which is perhaps to be expected given the limitations imposed by a train kitchen.
Rattled along at high speed on first night only to arrive at Kimberley. before lunch instead of a post lunch scheduled arrival. Could have gone slower on the first night and enabled a better sleep and still arrived in Kimberley at the scheduled post lunch arrival time.
My gut feeling is that the schedule was designed around enabling the staff to get off the train as early as possible to enjoy their time off rather than working longer than is absolutely necessary.
Carriage compartments a little tired and some aspects need fixing eg one USB port not working properly. We had a hand held shower over a bath which might sound luxurious but most impractical, especially on a moving train. How hard would it be to put a bracket on the wall to enable us to actually stand under the shower rose? Could not get any hot water (barely lukewarm) on last morning.

The Blue Train is an iconic piece of South Africa’s patrimony and a lovely elegant way to leisurely travel between Pretoria and Cape Town. The food is overall quite good, the wines well-paired to your meal choices and the service is efficient if perfunctory. The cabins are truly clever in combining old-style luxury into a small space: the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom ( we had a tub, no shower) was sufficiently large to actually take a bath while watching beautiful countryside slip passed. The TV was superfluous - far better had it shown a real time map of the train’s progress or be replaced with additional storage. The various lounge cars were beautifully appointed areas where bar service was wonderful and friendly. Due ti circumstances not always under the company’s control, the train schedule can be hit-or-miss with quirky work-arounds such speeding up at night to catch-up lost time which does affect the quality of sleep since it can be quite noisy chugging along at higher than normal speeds (bring earplugs just in case).

This was an amazing and very different trip. It was like travelling on S.A equivalent to the Orient Express.
It has it's flaws at times apparently like time keeping, but although we were stopped along the way for a few hours it didn't stop the experience or our time to arrive at our destination to Pretoria.
The staff and food were some of the best, compared to 5 * cruise ships.
Sorry can't add photos, on my phone which isn't working at present, it was beautiful decor, very comfortable.

An amazing journey from Cape Town to Pretoria. Food and drinks all included in the fare, as is the reception and introiduction at Cape Town. Accommodation is very cleverly arranged, with each suiote having en-suite facilities (shower, basin, WC) at least; the armchairs are converted in the evenings to very comfortable beds; the air-conditioning is efficient and keeps the whole train at about 20 - 21C. THe food is much better than 'fine dining' and the staff exceptional.

My wife and I took the Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria as a surprise birthday trip. It was scheduled to be 54 hours in total and eventually it was just under 55 hours from departure to arrival. This all sounds good, but when you read the onboard literature you realise that this trip originally took 27 hours, which was then increased to 31 hours and now 54 hours. This doubling of the journey time is a result of the very poor state of the SA railway infrastructure, with huge amounts of time spent not moving, but waiting for other trains or blockages on the line to be resolved.

This takes away from the experience of what should be a memorable trip, which it is, but not always for the right reasons and it's a real shame.

That said, the train is very luxurious with fine dining throughout including afternoon tea, a live jazz musician and excellent staff. Each carriage consists of either 4 en-suite or 3 en-suite compartments which have either twin or double beds that convert from comfortable seating areas each day courtesy of the butler that is onboard to cater to all needs. In addition, there's a dining car which is formal attire in the evening and then 2 lounge cars, one of which is a cigar lounge, plus an observation car at the back of the train. There is also a scheduled stop in Kimberley to view the diamond mine, this is optional, but very worthwhile.

All in all, I'm pleased to have made this trip, but I would have thought twice if I'd known about the frustrating periods of stationary inactivity.

Don't go on this rail journey expecting it to run completely smoothly but in some ways that is part of its charm. We were delayed around 2 hours before we set off but we loved our time on the train. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful and the food was really really good especially when you consider there are only about six people in the tiny kitchen. The berths are quite small & a little "faded" but they were what we expected whilst our butler Livhu (Eunice) was lovely and the sax player was fantastic. The communal areas were extremely comfortable & a great place to chat to the other guests if you want to do so. We had a very enjoyable trip to the Kimberley big hole (diamond mines) & a very relaxing time on the train. Although we seemed to stop in various places for an hour or so we arrived in Cape Town earlier than planned! This is just like going back in time and we enjoyed every minute of it.

I have to admit that, having read some of the recent reviews on here, I was suddenly extremely apprehensive about a trip I had dreamt about for a very long time.

All I can say is please, please ignore them. This is a wonderful, stylish and way, maybe the only way, to arrive in Cape Town.

Elegant, sophisticated and splendid, the Blue Train harks back to the golden age of rail travel where everything is just so and done immaculately.

The service is discreet and impeccable, our butler Thabo couldn’t do enough for us and the food and drinks were both divine and plentiful.

And we made so many lovely new friends! Scotland, England, Wales, South Africa, Australia, the US and Germany all represented in sparkling, convivial form.

Oh and the cabins… The beds are like clouds of comfort, you feel like you are in a delightful period drama and there is more than enough room for two.

Brilliant showers, too.

And, despite delays on the way (no hardship at all) we arrived a whole hour early into Cape Town.

I cannot stress how much you should do this trip if you can; treat yourself!

Wow, what an experience, from the Saxophone player in the departure lounge with fizz and canapes to 5 star luxury on board. The food was excellent and the service first class. We couldn't believe we actually had a bath and double bed in our carriage. Very friendly staff.

What a great train - all the reviews forget - this is a luxury train in Africa. The team do their best considering the infrastructure challenges. Yes our train was delayed and yes we were bussed from Klerksdorp but the team did their best despite limited water and electricity. But what a spoil- excellent food - great service with your own 24 hour butler. We would highly recommend- expect delays and factor it in to your trip. We will be back - thanks Mzolisi/ Kevin and Simon - we loved it
