Scenic but strenuous

A lovely trail but be fit and were hiking boots. Many hikers fall into the trap of thinking it is a nice stroll to a waterfall. There are many rocks to climb and uphills.
It is definitely worth it though!!

First part easy, than it gets tough.
Jan 2020
This is a beautiful walk, but it is tough. The first part is relatively easy, but than there is a rocky part. I am 65 years old with arthrosis and unfortunately I had to give up the walk after climbing a few rocks and seeing it was still a long way to go along rocks. There are no drinks for sale on this route.

Nice walk

After you have hiked over the suspension bridge, take the waterfall hike. It is a nice easy path and the waterfall is worth the effort. However, be aware that just before the Guana cave, there is a stretch where you have to climb over the rocks before joining the path again. This is a bummer if your condition is not too good.

Great coastal hike and trail!

Excellent coastal trail! You definitely need good shoes for slippery rocks and be able to boulder a bit.

Beautiful: nature, sea and wildlife.

Beautiful trail along the coastal line. In the end many boulders and rocks to climb. Look out for whales, seals and dolphins. We saw an amazing school of dolphins swimming and jumping.

Be warned - it’s tough

Honestly this is an endurance test not a fitness. We hiked after a few days of rain so it was extremely mucky and skippy which added to the danger.

Bring lots of water. Wear good grip shoes. Take note of the emergency number because once you’re on this trail you’re in it alone. Have your wits about you at all times. If possible, do it early. A full round trip takes anywhere from 3-4 hours depending on how much you need to stop

Rewarding experience
Jan 2019 • Pasangan
My partner and I completed the Waterfall Trial as a precursor to the Dolphin Trail (which we will be reviewing separately) in Jan 2019. We would recommend visitors bring/wear the following:
1) Sufficient water
2) Covered shoes with good support and traction (no sandals!)
3) Sunblock
4) Cap & sunglasses
5) Swimwear
6) Snacks
7) Camera!
8) A backpack (for maximum mobility)

The 6.4km round-trip hike is rated as difficult which we learnt meant risky in South Africa. We are in our 30s, exercise regularly with minimal hiking experience, and the hike took us 1.5 hours one way. The first half hour was on an easy path but things quickly escalated and my partner and I found ourselves on uneven footing most of the way. There were long stretches of rocky terrain where we had to hop/scramble from one boulder to another. There were also portions where we were on a narrow ledge of a rock-face or climbing up a rock-wall 2 to 3m high. We had to be sure-footed and kept our eyes on the ground all the way as a misstep would mean a sprained ankle at the least. The trail is not suitable for individuals with knee issues and we cannot imagine doing this in the rain.

Having said that, my partner and I enjoyed the hike immensely and felt a sense of accomplishment at having completed it. The views of the coast were spectacular throughout and although the waterfall was slightly underwhelming, it was refreshing wading in the pool. We expected our return trip to take less time as we were familiar with the route but we underestimated how tired we were and it took slightly longer. There were yellow arrows on the rocks to keep us on the right path and coupled with all the other visitors, we never felt unsure of where we were. All in all, it was a challenging and rewarding experience and my partner and I are glad we did it.

Beautiful oceanfront hike

I went on that hike twice already. I would always do it again. The first time a took my mum and I have to admit, that it is not that easy to climb over the rocks, I definitely underestimated the hike. I myself enjoyed it very much so did my boyfriend. The only little drawback was that we spotted a Boomslang what spoiled our experience a little, but hey that is nature. We still decided to do the hike and due to our fear, we managed to get there and back in under 2h. But the waterfall and the swim there is definitely worth it.

Great Hike!
Nov 2018 • Pasangan
This is an extremely underrated feature of the Garden Route. This coastal hike across beach boulders was gorgeous on its own. But the views at the end of the hike was astounding. No photos can do this 360 degree view justice. A majestic waterfall flowing into the Indian Ocean and waves crash along the beach. We also saw a school of dolphins in the background. Some other hikers saw whales on a different day, but we missed them. This was one of the most beautiful sights we saw. We opted for this over the suspension bridge and feel like we definitely made the right choice.
