The building is accessible and wheelchair friendly. Staff is friendly and their dedication to their work is evident. They allowed us and the kids to feed the seals. There were other beautiful aquatic life in the tanks. However, the tanks appeared well maintained. But they were old and some were leaking. The staff is doing their level best with what is at their disposal. They have a high influx of sea life coming in needing attention. East London municipality and phelantropists need to do more to assist this facility. It is a tourist attraction doing phenominal work for our sea life. It is abundant with knowledge and teaching about aquatic life.

Not been for almost 20 years, visiting EL and decided to go for old time sake 😐 totally regret it! It's dilapidated, dirty and pretty awful. So sad as it was amazing in its day!

It was cold on the sea front. There was one member of staff at the paydesk and one out with the birds outside. We arrived just in time for feeding, first the sea-lions, second the gannets and penguins and thirdly the pelicans. The gentleman was a very caring hard-working man. He allowed the children to help feed the fish to the penguins. We were luck to see the two penguin chicks in the incubators downstairs. Congrats on your hard work looking after these animals Sir.

It is a very small aquarium but the sea life is interesting. Watching the seals and penguins being fed is the best part. The leaking tanks are a bit of a downer.

Being the oldest aquarium in the country (1931); we had to go see the place. It is pretty small and R39 per adult was the entry. I could see these were old fish tanks which were small and not given sufficient flora in the tanks to give the fish in them, prettier interior decoration for their life-long homes. I felt sorry for many of these fish which looked like they lived in very poor homes, unlike the fish at Ushaka Marine World in Durban. Some of the fish tanks are also leaking which was sad as this led to towels being placed alongside the edges of the walls below the fish tanks. Not exactly inviting for tourists. Outside, we found a lovely view of the Indian Ocean and the rocky shore which brought in lots of fish from the sea. The seals were friendly even during their resting periods and the penguins were noisy sight. The one seal in the rehab pool taught me a thing or two about their ability to hold their breaths. The infrastructure looks old and it was sad to see a a place which should be a national heritage site not being given the due support. There was a lovely deck overlooking the sea at the far end of the outer aquarium and I found that it would make a lovely spot for a lunch. But the aquarium did not have a coffee shop in it. The artefacts are indeed worth the marvel. It was encouraging to note that the aquarium does offer one space that allows free entry for the general public to view the seals from. The charts in the aquarium are old but time spent reading them was really educational. I learnt quite a lot about the sardine run from a pretty old chart. It may not be the fanciest aquarium in this country and the bust at the entrance may need some cleaning, but because of its historical significance, I would recommend a visit.

Enjoyed the visit which was informative but unfortunately there is no seal show at present. However we did as the seals and penguins being feed as well as a young seal that had been washed up and was being rehabilitated. When visiting the aquarium be sure to have cash with you as they do not have card facilities.

We visited the East London Aquarium with a school group. The pupils were quite shocked at the amount of litter lying on the rocks around the sides of the aquarium. The aquarium floors were wet and there was no one to guide us although we had booked. So much more could be made of this educational facility. The aquarium has not moved with the times.

That is the most sorry excuse of a place to be called an aquarium but rather they should say come see some stinky fish tanks
Do not waste your money and visit because it is useless and leaking as well

Improved since repaired after being damaged a year or two ago?
How much are the tickets and how far is it from the docks where my cruise ship will dock

Hi pogda_2000,
I was there in August 2017 so my info may be a little off so I apologize if it is 🙈
As far as I know they have repaired the damage they had last year. If I remember correctly ticket prices were around R45 per adult (I may be wrong).
It would probably take about 5-10min via car (depending on where your ship will be). I would suggest you catch a taxi or try organize a shuttle survice through the company you will be traveling with.
Hope this helps. 🙂
