The views were amazing!! The hike down was beautiful. The waterfall itself was beautiful. The hike back up was a little much lol. But totally worth it. We added lunch to the tickets and it was really good. Our server was funny and personable. Really enjoyed the day!

A truly beautiful place to visit. We did this as part of a package with Canoa Aventura. Be warned the steps down seem great but on the way back up you may need plenty of breaks! Take water! Totally worth it. We were fortunate enough to be caught in a rain storm on the way back to the top! We did not use the restaurant there only changing facilities. But clean and did the job.

Incredible waterfall. We had a car so we drove ourselves and avoided the tours. Tickets were $20US and we just walked right in. There are 500 stairs to get to the bottom and you must come up those stairs after you take a small dip in the water so be prepared.
Recommendation is to not swim towards the waterfall as the current was very strong and it was hard to tread water. Stay closer to the rocks and if you really want to dip and swim go around the left side and there will be calmer waters (also lots of fish around)
Two safety lifeguards were just standing by to ensure no one gets hurt but really go at your own risk. Rocks are tricky, slippery and wet at the bottom but worth every step!
Not to be missed!

Must visit on your CR trip! Going down is easy - and worth the view. Coming up, you realize there are thoughtfully placed resting spots (some even have water) and a bar at the top. Get the tamarind marg to treat yourself!

great place, you need to be prepared to go down 600 steps and up, once down in the waterfall you can swim but be very careful, you can see fish and the water is very cold , but once you get used to it you have a great experience

Beautiful large waterfall! There is also a small area to the left for swimming with the least skittish fresh water fish I ever seen!
If you want to swim in the waterfall pool I recommend you only do so if you are a strong swimmer and don’t mind the cold.

Beautiful place! Very well kept, a steep walk up and down, however stairs are well maintained with plenty of places to stop and rest. You are able to swim near the waterfall but recommend staying near the shore as the power of the falls can pull you in. There are lifeguards on duty as well.

This is one of the main attractions around La Fortuna and it’s well worth it. The installations are just enough to let you enjoy it (safe stairs to reach the bottom of the waterfall, bathrooms and shower) and not enough to make you lose the sense of being surrounded by nature. The ambiant sounds, the lush green and the majestic waterfall were breathtaking. We also enjoyed dipping in the cold water at the waterfall (glad we had waters shoes!) and spend some time in the more quiet pool on the other side, where the waters are clear and the fish abundant. We saw some blue morphos flying around too.

The La Fortuna Waterfall was an amazing experience. Parking was easy even though we were in the "overflow" parking lot. Entrance was simple and we didn't have prepaid tickets. They have lockers, restrooms and a restaurant for snacks or lunch. The walk down the stairs was pretty long, but the waterfall was worth it. We swam in the main pool with the waterfall but actually enjoyed the swimming in the "natural pool" to the left much better. We were there on a weekday and there was a crowd but I didn't feel it was overcrowded. Everyone was calm and taking in the natural beauty. The walk back up the stairs was pretty long - 500 steps but still worth it!

My favorite thing I did in Costa Rica! Totally worth the trip to La Fortuna. The waterfall is so beautiful, and the stairs really aren't that bad. It took us 20 minutes to get down, and 15 up. Everyone told us it was a three hour event, but that really depends how long you want to stay at the waterfall. The parking lot feels safe and you don't need to buy tickets in advance if you forget to. Bring a swimsuit, and don't forget to look at the river across the waterfall (we totally missed it).

A day before is advised. Our host arranged everything for us. We used to tell him next day plan.

It's very safe and well deserved by the shuttles. There is a good restaurant on the way if you're hungry. You can also swin in the fresh water without struggles. To go there I recommend Easyhop. it's more convenient than the cab. Enjoy!

I felt that the parking lot was safe. Lots of tour buses and it was right in front of the ticket counter. Obviously don’t leave things in plain sight but it’s safe!

As mentioned by the above responders, there is NO hot springs at this attraction. Swimming is allowed near the waterfall, however, during my visit it was not allowed due to very strong current.

During my visit, I did not see any pets. The steps are narrow, always crowded with visitors, perhaps not a good idea to bring one’s pet here.

If the dog is not afraid easily (because of the loud noise of the waterfall) yes I think you can—don’t let the did in the water—it’s cold and because of the lack of salt he will sink immediately.

I read that there is a nice viewpoint of the waterfall sometime during the hike - is it possible to just go to the viewpoint and return without going all the way down? And how long is the roundtrip from the viewpoint?

No, you don’t have to BOOK it in advance, but I would suggest that you go when they just open. Less people and No queue.
