Cycled up and down the 40km or so of designated cycle roads along the west coast of the lake. Really flat and goes through a few villages with lots of cafes and restaurants etc. Great place to go with kids and lots of bike rentals available. We liked the area so much we actually switched our accommodation out of Dali for the last night so we could stay by the water and do more cycling. Obviously be aware of the UV, but what a beautiful place and all set up with modern facilities at a good price.

We also did a day long driving tour round the full lake using a local guide with various stop offs along the way. There are some good viewpoints on the east coast (where they seem to be developing more) but personally we just preferred riding around on the bikes away from the traffic.

Well worth a visit and we'd go back again and spend longer.

The Erhai Lake in Dali is really, really beautiful, especially on sunny days, where the Erhai Lake and the sky seem to be connected, making people feel very relaxed and their hearts return to peace. The wind in Erhai is strong and it blows very cool. However, it should be noted that Erhai Lake belongs to the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau area, so the ultraviolet ray is very strong, and it needs to strengthen sun protection.

Took shuttle bus and stopped at several spots along the way. Lots of weddings going on, nice cafes and area to explore. You can also rent a bike to cycle halfway around the lake and back.

This was great! We rented a bike and cycled along, stopping at a temple, a pier, and a small cafe where we had excellent rose tea.

Rent a bike and tour as far as you wish along the edge of Erhai Lake. Don’t hesitate to ring your bell when passing near tour groups - they far appreciate the sound over mistakenly backing into your path as you travel by. We visited during a busy day and started where I suppose most people begin their journey (the wharf just 5km from Dali ancient city) and still we were able to go for long stretches without having to share the path and views. A word of caution - two of our bikes broke down en route, make sure you have the contact # of the rental company and they can come and help get you rolling again. Even the newest looking “Forever” or “Merida” brand could disintegrate under modest use, especially if the bike has been poorly assembled.

Cruising on Erhai lake is a must-do activity while in Dali. It's a pleasure for the eyes as long as the weather is nice. The cruise in itself lasts around three hours. There is just one cruise in the morning leaving at 09:30 from 大里港码头. If you are based in the old city you need to catch bus number 8 and get off at 大里港. It takes around 30 minutes. Then you have to walk a long way (around 1.5 kilometers). Get ready to hold your smartphone and activate your GPS. Reaching the pier is not really very convenient. If you take a taxi from the old city I guess you will spend around 150 RMB. Once the cruise is over you need to take another taxi to get back to the old city and it's a very long way as Erhai lake is pretty vast. Therefore I suggest finding other people who need to bound for the old city so that you can share the cost of the trip with others.
The cruise costs 142 RMB and includes a folkloristic show that is performed by talented dancers belonging to the local ethnic group. All in all a nice experience. But in summer the weather is very often cloudy and gloomy. I would recommend readers traveling in Yunnan during the winter season.

I rented a bike and rode along the lake from Dali ancient town to Xizhou and the butterfly spring. It was amazing and I’m already planning my next trip to Dali and riding around the lake (more days needed for that tho!)

I was traveling around Yunnan and Erhai(and Dali) was the final stop before heading back to Shanghai, having covered Shangrila, lijiang and lugu already. Shuanglang was the first of Dali. It was pleasant, but already had our fair share of ancient towns on this trip, hence was average. My advice is to Take the golf cart in and out as the walk is pretty long(10 kuai). Got on a boat to a tiny island Park(nanzhao), got back and then walked a small bit of the same town. Spent around 4 hours in total. You may cut it short or spend more time based on how it appeals to you. I'd love a bike ride around if I had more time. Very bling luxury cars available outside for rent, incase you'd want to take photos or drive around erhai(I didn't rent one).
Erhai is huge and there are many spots around it.
Other to-sees in Dali:-
Flower garden( huayvmuchang): All seasons, great for pictures, do not chart more than an hour for this, unless you have a girlfriend who loves to be in photos.

Dali Ancient town: refreshing as it was less commercial and more authentic than the Lijiang ancient town.

Cangshan mountains: spent around 4 hours there and is another must visit in Dali.

Three Pagodas: another must see in Dali.

Foreigners Street at the ancient town. Expected much more on New year's Eve 2020, but seemed pretty dry. Two days later, stumbled upon the other side(rennin road), and wished we had gone there for new year's.

Call outs: do not know if erhai and all these towns will be as peaceful post-covid when tourism is back to normal.

We spent 5 days around Erhai Lake, a beautiful stretch of water and China's 7th largest lake. But the best experience, enhanced by almost perfect weather and realtively few passemgers, was the a boat trip from Dali Port. This left at 10:00, took three hours to Taoyuan village on NW shore including a 45 minute stop off in delightful Nanzhao Island on NE shore. You will need to take a taxi or book transport to return to Dali/Xiaguan (we used Didi). It is a big boat but pleasantly free of the usual non-stop guided tour over the loudspeakers, so that the serenity and beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains can be enjoyed properly. Snacks/drinks available on baord and at island stop off. Cost was a reasonable RMB 140
